Kintamayama 44,267 Posted May 17, 2018 (edited) Takanohana used the mike to explain two mono-iis, for the first time since returning to shinpan duties. In Jonidan, there was a monoii in the Shinzan- Daishoukou match. "This discussion decided it was gumbaidori, the east person won the match," he said, very shortly and concisely, probably because it's been a while since he used the mike. Then there was a monoii in the Ishihara-Terumichi bout. "The gunbai pointed to the west rikishi, but the east rikishi won.." was all he said. "How about an explanation on why the decision was overturned??" shouted a heckler, very loudly. "I did it myyyyyyyy waaaaaaayy.." You liked the possibility that he might got serious injured? I can understand that people entirely hate Takanohana for reasons, but this? Sorry, but this is just bad character, if you enjoy (or wish) physical harm to someone. Even a slight one.

It was just the look on his face. I like Takanohana even if he is a bit of a whacko

Asashosakari 18,670 Posted May 19, 2018 I seem to recall that one of Takanohana's objectives in his very early days on the board as shimpan director was to make the arcane mono-ii explanations more accessible to the fans. Does anyone remember what he specifically did differently back then? Pretty sure it wasn't this "announce only the bare minimum" thing, but I'm hazy on the details. As far as I recall he was always one for extremely simple 'explanations'. I always hated it when he was shinpan...no explanation whatsoever and he always looked totally spaced out, as if he wasn't even watching the bouts. Musoyama is the best! ;) Edited May 19, 2018 by Pandaazuma

Musoyama is the best! ;) I found what I was thinking of - it's less important than I thought I remembered: On 9/15/2010 at 08:52, Kintamayama said: And now, a change in the wording of the chief judge after a monoii- Takanohana sought the advice of a broadcaster friend of his wife's in finding a better wording for the head shinpan's explanation of a monoii. He finally got a chance to use it in Makushita yesterday. "I will explain the discussion we had," was the old wording. "As a result of the discussion we had regarding the outcome of this bout , the gunbai goes to etc.. etc.." is the new wording he used. Asked about this, he answered: "I'm just doing my job. Now, if you'd like to ask me about other dohyo-related stuff.." Incidentally, that thread might make for interesting reading for anyone who wasn't around for the happier days of "reformist Takanohana".
Gurowake 3,883 Posted May 19, 2018 Wait, I thought he was demoted to the lowest rank possible. How does he get to be the guy with the microphone? I thought that was the job of the highest-ranked guy. I guess I'm a little ignorant on this topic.

For lower divisions, the head shimpan is simply one of the group, in turns.
