On the second Tochinoshin-Chiyotairyu replay, watch the excellent judging by Shimpan ex-Takamisakari, checking his cellphone after the tachi-ai. And when he looks back up, the rishiki are not there anymore.

I think he's being the time-keeper and checking the bout length.

Nice try, but the time-keeping judge never checks the bout length, let alone a couple of seconds after the tachiai. His job is to tell the gyoji when to begin, that's all.

It's just Takamisakari being his nervous old self, that's all.

Actually, he does, just check any bout that gets close to water break time at the four-minute mark.

I think you're worried that every match of every basho from now on will have frreaky fades and psychedelic dissolves.  I don't think so.  He's found a new toy and is feeling the giddy joy of the artist.  I trust his sense of taste: every basho we get Font Day, and going forward there will probably be a Crazy Blend Day (or whatever).  To overdo it would dull the surprise and kill the fun.

And I expect that if he disagrees with this analysis, I'll get the Flaming Skewer!

Yesterday's video already was much more "normal" and no complaints were registered.
