Tsubame 359 Posted May 23, 2018 Have to vent my anger a little bit... But is anyone also heavily disappointed by the performances of Shodai and Abi today? They got both shoved out without any sights of resistance. Quite fishy...

Disappointing given the importance of the bout to the yusho race.
Eikokurai 3,437 Posted May 23, 2018 It could be a tough tournament to get promoted from Juryo. Aminishiki and (probably) Takekaze aside, most of the guys near the bottom are either KK already or looking good for it. The final few days will be telling. As things stand there won’t be much room down there.

I'm not sure why Shodai seemed so uninterested but I think that we are seeing the signs of people 'working out' Abi's Frog style, in the same way people worked out Ishiura's Submarine attack. He didn't get a chance to extend his arms against Shohozan, who just kept moving forward and blasted him out. Abi always sticks his arms out at the tachiai, and springs forward with his legs, but if he can't set that up it looks like he can be quickly overwhelmed. Who knows - it could just have been a bad day for Abi...

Kintamayama 44,639 Posted May 23, 2018 Hakuhou hurt his eye at the tachi-eye hitting it against the shoulder of Shoud-eye. "I thought my eye exploded but after a while I could see normally again so that's good," he said.. Regarding tomorrow's match-up against Tochinoshin: "These last three days my flow was good. I hope it continues tomorrow. He is strong. I have to be extra careful in all areas," he said. 2

He got a bit lucky a couple times early on and his sumo has not been good this basho. He may still KK. As far as Abi is concerned it's probably the fact he was facing a guy who isn't fazed by slaps again and had little to offer. Abi needs to expand his repertoire. ryafuji 810 Posted May 23, 2018 8 hours ago, Gurowake said: Kakuryu henkas like 3 times a year. I'm not going to count, but it's neither particularly frequently nor vanishingly rare for him. I don't see why people get so upset about it. It's always been a part of his bag of tricks. Of course he's going to be contrite about it, and who knows if it was "planned" or if it was a spur of the moment thing, but Yokozuna will probably always declare it was not planned, as doing such would be beneath them. I think that's right. I seem to remember Hakuho using the exact same excuse when he henka'd Harumafuji in March 2016.
Rocks 1,807 Posted May 23, 2018 Just watched. Tochinoshin, WOW. Ozeki for sure. I think he wins tomorrow and might even get a zensho. I'm not sure Hakuho is in condition to handle Tochinoshin this basho. I am sure Kakuryu isn't.

Nice to see that the GOAT can still get his favourite grip once in a while. 2
Eikokurai 3,437 Posted May 23, 2018 Hakuho did his 70s tachiai again today I noticed. It wasn’t even marginal. How is he getting with it?

What he did not plan for was the total derision it evoked. If he did it against a rikishi who could have provided strong competition, that could somehow be taken into account. But he did against an M5 rikishi who seemed to be no threat. He wanted a win and he got it in the easiest way possible. And despite his "totally unhappy" comments, I'm sure he didn't feel nearly as bad as he seemed to. A win, no matter how cheap it may be, is a lot better than a loss. Impossible for those of us who have never been on the dohyo to make such judgements. I think it is perfectly possible for a seasoned rikishi to henka through pure instinct with no planning whatsoever. Kakuryu is skilled in evasion too so it would have been a strong instinct if he wasn't concentrating 100% at tachiai - something which is also perfectly possible. 3
Pandaazuma 1,310 Posted May 23, 2018 Oh dear...am I really going to have to watch Terunofuji lose to Tobizaru by yorikiri tomorrow?? It was bad enough when Takekaze did that to him.

YoungSumo 93 Posted May 23, 2018 Really looking forward to Tochinoshin - Hakuho tomorrow. If Tochinoshin he'll probably zensho.

ALAKTORN 346 Posted May 23, 2018 What the hell was Shōdai doing? Was he even trying? Tochinoshin is more of a yokozuna than the 2 current ones right now. Barring injury he gets promoted soon enough. I think he’s gonna yūshō, and possibly beat Hakuhō tomorrow. If he actually does then the yūshō is as good as his.
wanderer 159 Posted May 23, 2018 I think Kakiryu is just preemptively sending a message to Tochinoshin, the main rival this time, to blunt his sharp attack. The M5 rikishi wasn't Kakiryu's main focus.
Philioyamfugi 378 Posted May 23, 2018 Tochinoshin and Hakahou is the match.. not going to be a quick one. Was cool to see Kotoshugiku stretching with the earbuds wearing his kimono.. Sometimes hard to remember that these are young men. Geek has Ichinojo tomorrow, Kagayaki has Takekaze, Daiamami has yoshikaze... Now the race for KK...Ikioi exceeding expectations again... can he take Kakaruu ? Big day tomorrow !

Tsubame 359 Posted May 23, 2018 Am I the only one not seeing Tochinoshin winning against Hakuho? This match will not be even close. I expect nothing more then a clear (and fast) victory by Hakuho.
