Will Terunofuji continue when getting demoted to makushita or not?

He should go and get whatever surgery he needs, then carefully build himself back up before trying again. He has nothing to lose now, he might as well do the right thing.

Takakeisho rally beat up on Yoshikaze today. I felt it over here. Wouldn’t surprise me if his face was six shades of purple tomorrow. He will lead with it anyway, whatever color it is

Oh look Yoshikaze has something in his eye again.

There's little to no point being a little bit better than the worst current active sumo wrestler around, no? Unless you're looking to live in Japan while not paying for meals and lodging. Mind you, I have a sneaky suspicion I would still lose to Hattorizakura in an arm-wrestle or amy strength contests....

Of course, I was kidding a bit.  I have no illusion that I can do better than Hattorizakura.

I am thinking, even I can do better than Hattorizakura.   Too bad that there is an age limit to get into sumo.

To me, maybe Hattorizakura is part of an important Sumo research project, trying to answer the question "Can an active rikishi become banzuke-gai?"

Goeido officially out. Looks like Tochinoshin will get the Yokozuna on Days 13 and 14.

It’s all setting up for a tomoesen. :)

So if Goeido sits out the remainder of the basho, both ozeki will be kadoban in Nagoya. When is the last time we had that happen? This may give the NSK more reason to promote Tochinoshin after this basho.

I believe Goeido and Terunofuji were both Kadoban as recently as September 2017. That was the latter’s final basho before demotion.

Although Takayasu was also on the banzuke of course.

So does that mean they both need to win at least 8 bouts at Nagoya or these lose their ozeki rank?

thanks

Yes, that’s correct. Then if they both fail to do that, they’ll get one shot at winning 10 bouts as Sekiwake to return immediately to Ozeki.

Wow, no komusubi, sekiwake or ozeki on the West side today. A maegashira rikishi (M1W Kaisei) was the last man to enter from that side during the dohyo-iri. This must be a rare thing, right?

The DB says:

empty east, empty west

In the 1920 case every West-side sanyaku bar the yokozuna was actually absent, in 1960 it was partly a scheduling fluke (one East-side sanyaku absent, the other two scheduled against the East-side yokozuna).

As for cases where one sanyaku was scheduled but missed his bout (like today), the DB has one more case on the West side, but it's simply the day before the full absences in 1920.

What's also interesting is how rare it apparently has been to even just have one non-yokozuna sanyaku rikishi representing a side...only around 100 times in nearly 7000 tournament days.

Thanks for clarifying

Does anyone know how I "like" posts? Doesn't seem to be an option for me at the moment. Do I need to have made more posts?

I have the same issue. It’s apparently to do with being down as an ‘inactive member’. It’s supposed to sort itself out but my account never has.

It will in time, I joined before the January basho and just became “active” before our current May basho

Chiyonokuni is putting in such a great effort and delivering solid results.  He's not a yusho contender given the strength of the other runners, but I hope he makes double figures for his own success and is considered for the fighting spirit prize.  I think he will struggle against the higher tier guys (or whoever's left!) but he will be glad of the challenge.

Kintamayama's video commented on Ikioi pulling today.  I think I can forgive that considering how hard he's been trying all week to deploy his right arm again to throw.  Yesterday was a good example of how effective it is when it works.  I think his mind is in a good place again right now.

Once again I'm impressed at Tochinoshin's strength and consistency.  Today looked easy compared to the herculean bouts he's had this week.  I had been worried that his body wouldn't be up to the challenge given the pre-basho murmurings (and I worry about over-reliance on lifting his opponents), but so far so good.  Fingers crossed he makes his magic number and more.

Yutakayama gets an A+ for effort.  It's a shame his scorecard does not reflect the amount of fighting spirit and good sumo he's shown.  I'm glad he's persevering undaunted. I quite enjoyed Asanoyama's bout as well, particularly his change of strategy when things weren't working.

I'm not really sure what Endou is thinking coming back tomorrow.  And to face Hakuhou to boot?  Either his injury is not in fact as serious as initially suspected or he's going on a fool's errand that will likely put him in a worse position for longer.

Is there some bad blood between Hakuhou and Kotoshogiku?  Couldn't help thinking that all that tachiai bluster was a massive mind game.  And then for Hakuhou to charge like that... meh.

He had a great bout the other day, bless him.  It's really worth a watch.  I was on tenterhooks!  But it mystifies me that he still hasn't bulked up significantly well, at all.  I know that jonokuchi are literally the lowest in the food chain when it comes to communal eating, but come on...

Giku's hands were nowhere near the ground when Hakuho charged. The Geek got robbed.

Perhaps the replay on Kinta's usual superlative vid could change your mind.

I messed up. I figured he might get them a day earlier with  Goeido in.

Why was Nishikigi’s win over Ishiura called as a tsuridashi? It looked more like a kimedashi to me. No belt grip. Sometimes I think the line between some kimarite is a little too thin!

Tochinoshin is a monster. I think he can beat Hakuhō this basho.

If he takes this yūshō and then the next, who thinks he’ll be promoted to yokozuna with just 1 ōzeki tournament? I don’t know if that’s even possible but it looks promotable to me.

Mawashi grip is not mandatory for tsuridashi to be called. This is specified on the Japanese side of the Kyokai's old kimarite list (unfortunately the English version lacks some of those finer details). The relevant line is:

まわしを取らずに相手を抱えて吊るときもある。
