Preparations of the masses- May 2018

Recommended Posts

Tochinoshin has injured his right shoulder during the jungyo and did not train at home today. He just lent his chest to Makushita and under rikishi for butsugari. Reminder-he is on an official Ozeki run. "If the pain gets worse, I am worried  I may not be able to do any sumo. But if I don't train.." he said. He is planning to go for degeiko from May 4th to Dewanoumi beya. "Nothing I can do about the pain. I can't let this get me down. I just hope things will get better as the basho rolls around.." he summed.

Another version says Tochinoshin hurt his shoulder in his bout against Shoudai last basho, and has been undergoing treatment by electricity, massage and icing of the area. "It sort of feels like a partial dislocation, I guess..There are days when it's better and there are days I feel the pain," he also said. He has hinted he may do an MRI before the basho. "I'm not complaining. I don't know how many more years I will be active but this could be my last chance at an Ozeki promotion, so I'll be going all out", he said.

"Whachyou lookin' at, Willis?"

It will be Sleepless in Sumida for Ishiura. He sent me a message at 3.30am Japan time to tell me that his wife gave birth. He didn't say if the baby is the gender that is allowed on the dohyo or the gender that has to stay out. (or according to Tumblr it could be one of 112 genders)

Congratulations to him and his lovely wife. They are both brilliant with kids. He read bedtime stories to my kids who just adore their Uncle Masa.

IT'S A BOY.

Mitakeumi restarted keiko on the 1st - only the basics and lending his chest to the low ranks. He had trained with Takayasu during the first half of the jungyo, esp. home in Nagano pref. on the 10th and 11th, but at the later jungyo days did no keiko on the dohyo. Real keiko will start for him on the 3rd, at the keiko soken for the YDC, and on the 4th the ichimon rengo-geiko starts, with Kasugano-beya and Tochinoshin. http://www.shinmai.co.jp/news/nagano/20180502/KT180501IWI090008000.php

IIRC, wasn't Takayoshitoshi suspended from Natsu?

Yes, which is why he's preparing for Nagoya, not Natsu...

In addition to overwhelming Kisenosato 9-2, Tochinoshin also faced Mitakeumi and Tochiouzan and beat them 7-1.

Kawika, nothing to be confused about - I was asking (badly) for confirmation that the reason Takayoshitoshi was practicing for Nagoya even though Natsu was coming up was because he was suspended from Natsu. fwuzzle23, in a later post, confirmed this.

That was probably from his debut makuuchi Basho in Kyushu where he went 10-1.

I guess no word on Ura yet ?

There's a seperate thread for Ura, but one of the coaches at his stable posted a day or two ago that the earliest he'll be back is July.

Endou went for degeiko at Sakaigawa-beya, 21 straight bouts against Goueidou (3-18) and then 7-1 against Sadanoumi and Myougiryuu, 29 consecutive bouts in all. He has been doing a lot of degeiko lately, which is unusual for him. " I've been able to do good keiko after a long time at degeiko. It's good to change the atmosphere sometimes, is it not? " he explained.

Mitakeumi is famous for doing lousy keiko. Today, he went to Dewanoumi beya, facing Tochinoshin and Tochiouzan for 14 bouts,.no results given. Just talk about "feverish sumo".  He was pushed around a lot by Tochinoshin but showed some sharp first-steps here and there. "The win-loss thing is not important. I think I've been hitting well," he said, which I take to mean he got his ass kicked, again. The press loves him, but I'm not impressed yet.

If you're not feeling at home at your own heya, your keiko will be lousy
