Bench World Cup 2018

Now that Germany is out I have no substitute coming in after the preliminary round! By picking Germany as my 1st substitute I thought I had an extremely safe bet of a country that would certainly make it to the knock out stage... :-D

It's my fault Germany are eliminated. Every team I support (or adopt) in the World Cup gets eliminated early. The BBC personality quiz told me I should support Germany, so I apologise...

Group E - Round 3 - report after 60min

Kuroelwin 0:1 Krisachiyama
(Serbia) (Brazil)

Germany L x:1 W Argentina

Iran D x: Costa Rica
Serbia ® x: Poland

The third loss for unlucky Kuroelwin is sealed already with Krisachiyama scoring the chain-breaking goal.  He can even score some more (which might be important for the final group standings).

Finngall 0:1 Jejima
(Switzerland) (Costa Rica)

Germany L : Brazil

Tunisia :x D Denmark
Belgium :x W Saudi Arabia
Senegal © :x D Iran
Saudi Arabia W :x Costa Rica ®
Costa Rica :x L Nigeria

And here's another goal, although a bit anachronistic: Jejima's chain won't be broken, so Argentina will be either his first or second goal. If Finngall won't turn the table, we'll have three players tied at six points each.

In that case you share some of the blame with the BBC.. and with Jejima who was responsible for pointing out that quiz... ;-)

Same question if a player's S1 has been eliminated, although from a passing comment above I assume if your S1 was eliminated you do without, yes?

Also, do the same scoring tables (listed in the Match Play section) still apply?

No other team will be assigned as (R)/(C), the player must go without them.

Yes, you are right, 10 players will play without a substitute (including me :-() Hmmmm, 10 so far...

Yes, the same tables.

Group D - Refioji Nekonishiki
Round 3 - Day 3

What a big luck Bae Dat has!!! His chain didn't break in Slot #1, Tanetakahiro stays in game, too.
Too much red in his line-up. Chances for goals in #4 and #6. If #2 and #3 will win, of course.

Score is 0:0

Jakusotsu is unhappy today, Pitinosato is, too. But he doesn't have Germany in his line-up, and now his only hope for scoring a goal if Tunisia wins tomorrow. Then his chain will break in #3.

Score is 0:0

See you tomorrow, when everything will be decided.

Group E - Round 3 - report after 70min

Kuroelwin 0:2 Krisachiyama

Iran D x:x D Costa Rica
Serbia ® L x:x Poland

Krisachiyama scores another goal with his ®-team and might score two more. (See the provisional standings below.)

Finngall 0:2 Jejima
(Switzerland) (Costa Rica)

Germany L x:1 W Brazil
Portugal D x:1 W Argentina
Croatia W x: England ©
Switzerland ® D x: Colombia
Peru W x:x L Russia

Senegal © x:x D Iran
Saudi Arabia W x:x D Costa Rica ®
Costa Rica D x:x L Nigeria

Finngall suffers the same fate as Kuroelwin with Germany on top and will lose at least 0:2 as well, while Jejima might also score another two goals in the final stretch.

Provisional standings:

Player P W D L GF GA GD Points
Krisachiyama 3 2 0 1 4 1 +3 6
Jejima 3 2 0 1 4 2 +2 6
Finngall 3 2 0 1 4 3 +1 6
Kuroelwin 3 0 0 3 1 7 -6 0

We see that former leader Finngall is definitely knocked out of the Cup. Right now Krisachiyama sits on top, but Jejima may take the lead if he scores more goals than him.

Group B Update
after day 3

Both Group B matches came to an end on Day 3, but only one final score is known.  And it's all because of Germany and Switzerland.

Match #1:  Switzerland teased chishafuwaku by taking the lead in the 88th minute, only to give it back in extra time. Unfortunately he needed them to lose. The draw caused his chain to break in Slot 1 (table 2). Then Switzerland's antics led to a goal for his opponent in Slot 4 (table 3).  Polimasa's chain will not break until either Slot 6 or 7. Polimasa will win this match, we just don't know the final score yet.

Match #2: Germany's loss broke Fujiyama's chain in Slot 2 and brought the match to an end. Final Score  Ganzohnesushi 0 - 1 Fujiyama

image.png.da15f7bd1405ce2c87f74d964f94add7.png

FUKUROU prognosticates:  I think Polimasa will win the group on goal differential, with chishafuwaku coming in second, but that will be confirmed or debunked on day 4.

Powodzenia!

Group G update:

Still very open thanks to the Costa Rica draw.

Chijanofuji can no longer win. If England wins today, he could be slaughtered at least 4-0, which could put Boltono third if the Achiyama-Fujiko match is not a draw. If England fail to win, this match will end in a 0-0 draw and Boltono will be fourth.

The crunch bout could still very easily go either way so we will have to wait until the very end. Achiyama will be wanting Colombia to win and England not to. If England AND Colombia win, it will be a draw and we will need further tie-breakers. Many other permutations are possible.

So...sorry, Jejima, but you may have to work this one out yourself if you are short of time because we won't know for sure until around 5am Japan time tomorrow. I will edit this post and add the working out a bit later for your convenience. And I will post the final results as soon as I can.

Group A
Round 3 update...
Furanohana (Uruguay): 1 Tunisia ; 2 France ; 3 Japan (C)  ; 4 Portugal ; 5 Argentina ; 6 Sweden ; 7 Russia :'-( ; 8 Mexico ; 9 Uruguay (R)  ; 10 Iceland ; 11 Panama
vs
Nekonishiki (Russia): 1. Portugal2. Brazil3. Colombia, 4. Mexico :'-(5. Saudi Arabia6. Belgium, 7. Peru ©8. Russia ®9. Serbia10. Morocco11. Iran
Comment:  Maybe  a 7-link chain. This is what I say a month before all this circus begins.

Jejima: Nekonishiki scores!  Brazil's win guarantees him a goal.  But it is not over yet.  Mexico's loss means that Nekonishiki's chain will be broken on the 4th link (if not before).  All results remain possible.  I guess the key remaining fixture is Tunisia vs Saudi Arabia.  If Tunisia wins, the scored will be levelled 1-1, with all to play for!

Atenzan (Saudi Arabia): 1. Germany (C):'-(, 2. Switzerland, 3. Argentina, 4. Colombia, 5. Russia, 6. England, 7. Australia, 8. Japan, 9. Saudi Arabia (R), 10. Serbia, 11. Nigeria
vs
Crall (Egypt): 1. Spain, 2. Portugal, 3. Egypt (R):'-(, 4. Switzerland, 5. Uruguay, 6. Poland (C), 7. Belgium, 8. Panama, 9. Sweden, 10. Iran, 11. Costa Rica

Jejima: We have a result!  Germany's (surprise?) loss in injury time, means that Atenzan's chain never got started.  With Crall's chain being broken in the third slot, this match ends in a 0-0 draw.  I can update the table a bit...

Atenzan and Crall have been rather goal-shy for all of the group stages.  Hopefully they will find their scoring feet in the round of 16 of the Bench World Saucer!

Standings after Round 2

For Jejima's convenience:

Boltono:

1. England (R) 2. Costa Rica (C) 3. Brazil 4. Argentina 5. Croatia 6. Poland 7. Switzerland 8. Sweden 9. Nigeria 10. Iran 11. Saudi Arabia

Chijanofuji:

1. Portugal, 2. Mexico, 3. Colombia, 4. France, 5. Belgium (R), 6. Poland, 7. Japan, 8. Iceland, 9. Panama, 10. Sweden, 11. South Korea (C)

Working:

1: ?? [If England win, 2-0. If England draw or lose, 0-0 and Boltono's chain broken]

2. Assuming onwards that Boltono's chain is not broken: 1-0 and Chijanofuji's chain is broken here whatever happens.

3. ?? [If Colombia win, 0-0. If Colombia draw, 1-0. If Colombia lose, 1-0.]

4. 1-0

5 If Belgium win or draw, we won't get this far. If Belgium lose, 1-0.

6. Same teams: Ignored.

7. 0-0

8. 1-0

9. If Panama win or draw, game over.

10. 0-0

11. 0-0

2. Achiyama vs Fujiko

Achiyama:

1. Colombia 2. Switzerland 3. Russia 4. Portugal 5. Brazil (C) 6. Argentina 7. Panama (R) 8. Nigeria 9. Serbia 10. South Korea 11. Costa Rica

Fujiko:

1. Spain ©, 2. Costa Rica, 3. England, 4. Russia, 5. Uruguay, 6. Argentina, 7. Peru, 8. Panama, 9. Senegal, 10. Denmark, 11. Tunisia (R)

Working:

1. ?? [If Colombia win, 1-0. If Colombia draw, 0-1. If Colombia lose, 0-1 and Achiyama's chain is broken]

2. Assuming onwards that Achiyama's chain is not broken, 0-0

3. ?? [If England win or draw, Achiyama's chain is broken. The score depends also on Colombia. If England lose, 0-0]

4. 0-0 and Fujiko's chain is definitely broken here.

5. 0-0

6. 0-0

7. ?? [If Panama win, 1-0. If Panama draw or lose, 0-0, Achiyama is broken and game over]

8. 0-0

9. 0-0. Achiyama broke if Senegal win or draw.

10. 1-0

11. 0-0

So it is all very open. Hope this helps a bit. Have to do real-life work now. Will post the real results asap after the matches.

Same question if a player's S1 has been eliminated, although from a passing comment above I assume if your S1 was eliminated you do without, yes?

Also, do the same scoring tables (listed in the Match Play section) still apply?

I think Nekonishiki has already answered your queries, however to confirm....

If (R), (C) and S1 teams are eliminated from the competition, then tough.

The same scoring tables apply - but please also read the rules for possible extra time and penalties.

Many thanks to Nekonishiki for letting us all know our squads going into the round of 16!

Looks like Furanohana has the best remaining squad (9 teams on his squad), with chishafuwaku and Finngall having just the smallest squads (5 teams remaining).

Pick your Quarter-finals Penalty takers here!

You have until kick-off of France vs Argentina  - the first game of the round of 16 - to select your penalty takers for the quarter-finals. You are selecting the four teams that you think will most likely be in the semi-finals - but you get to pick 11 teams (so 7 will definitely be wrong!) - but put in order, so the most likely should be in slots 1-4 as your penalty takers.

So much for my conspiracy theory.

Well done Belgium.

It is nearly 4 am in the morning here in Hong Kong.

I am going to make some coffee, and then start working on the round of 16 match-ups.

Hopefully the other refiojis will announce the final results - and group positions, as soon as possible.

Please delay sending your round of 16 line-ups until you know who your refioji will be (hopefully within the next hour or so.)

It looked good for Krisachiyama at first to score another goal to secure 1st place in the group. But then Panama turned their early lead into a loss, so it's all up to Jejima's boys now...
