Bench World Cup 2018

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

Hi everyone!

Back in 2010, we had the inaugural Bench World Cup.  This is a fantasy sports game played during the football (soccer) World Cup.  Since then, there has been another Bench World Cup in 2014, and two Bench Euros in 2012 and 2016.

Here are the basic rules of the game.  (I will check through carefully, and update where necessary, if the Bench World Cup 2018 goes ahead.)

It is a little early, but my family will probably be heading to the Philippines for my brother-in-law's wedding in late May, returning to Hong Kong just before the start of the World Cup.  In the Philippines, my Internet access is pretty poor (or worse), so I would like to see if there is enough interest to run the 2018 edition of the game, and set up all of the basics by the end of April, before  we all get wrapped up in the May basho.

Let's see if enough people sign up to play before mid April to decide whether or not to run the game.  That then leaves two weeks (before the end of April) to do the pre-tournament admin (selection of teams etc) - meaning no need to interfere with the May basho - nor my family's trip to the land of bad Internet.

Who would like to play (we need 32 competitors, plus a few substitutes, ideally) - preference is normally given to sumo game players and sumo fans, but also interested family members (and other friends?), and who would be able to help out as a 'refioji' (referee/gyoji - term originally coined by Achiyama).

Please register your interest to play below, and whether you would be able to kindly help out with the administration.  (For the group stages of the World Cup, the refiojis wil be asked to look after one group  - so 4 players).

Although I'm less than thrilled about the upcoming WC itself, I'm still eager to play this nice game. So count me in for both lists, please.

I'll definitely play, and possibly a friend of mine as well (to be confirmed tomorrow). Not sure about refiojiing yet because June is usually a busy month for me.

Play. Fully intending not to as per every four years, but play because i am weak and cannot resist the temptation of repeatedly coming in last. I don't remember how it goes though, but I'm pretty sure my memory will  be jogged at some juncture.

I needed a full explanation of the rules two years ago for the Euros, since I'd never even touched Bench Sumo. It was still a hell of a lot of fun. Straightforward game.

Bench World Cup is fun. Moreover, it’s once in 4 years fun!

The great thing is that it’s in June and won’t interfere with the Sumo gaming.

Hope to see previous continuous participants like:

If needed:

1.) I can gyoji a second group;

2.) I can recruit my grandson Krisachiyama, who is 5 years old, and have already participated  in Bench Euro 2016.

Many thanks to Achiyama for rallying the troops....

Although we have just about managed to scrape together enough refijois (very important!), I think we are still lacking players to make it possible to play.  (It is a little early to recruit Mr Froggy and Mr Fluffy - beloved soft toys of this household - to make up the numbers, as they did for Euros 2016.)  I think the maximum number of 'official drones' - if ever necessary - should be just four, as there are already a few semi-serious players (my two babies, and perhaps Achiyama's grandson).  So we need at least another 7 *real* players need to be recruited before we can consider game on!

So, please consider playing - even if you are a mild fan - and also recruit your wife/husband/child/grandchild/friend/person you met on the bus, to help get the numbers up!
