Yukiarashi 195 Posted March 16, 2018 (edited) Terutsuyoshi might have just pulled off the most physically impossible Ipponzeoi in the history of everything, but they gave it to TYT. If you asked me Terutsuyoshi was attacking from behind the back and pulled Takayoshitoshi over him making him a dead body, but I think they said he lost because of his hand touched down first. I know I have a new favorite after Satoyama goes though. WOW! Edited March 16, 2018 by Yukiarashi

Yukiarashi 195 Posted March 16, 2018 (edited) Well day 6 in Juryo is over and we have a five-way tie for the lead, Terunofuji is 3-3, Takanoiwa is 3-3 after losing to a Makushita rikishi, we've had two 26 letter bouts, and Akiseyama is a co-leader. Sounds like Juryo to me. Edit: Kaisei is 6-0 and flying so far under the radar, that the broadcast just missed his bout! Gernobono 467 Posted March 16, 2018 terunofuji's loss today was a blueprint of the last basho...once he is moving backwards there is no way he can stop it........

I thought maybe it was a jikan-mae, but when they finally showed the replay (taken from a bad camera angle) it looked as if the gyoji had already turned the gunbai. So I think they just screwed up. I heard no abject apology, though.

The Banzuke Topics at the Kyokai site use simply "sanyaku" as the ozeki rank is often regarded as distinct from the other two sanyaku ranks. I prefer "niyaku" but no one else does.

Philioyamfugi 378 Posted March 16, 2018 (edited) Daiamami with another win. Endou gave it everything he had, beautiful match. Takayasu should start waking up about now. Ichinojo getting it done. It's kakuryuu basho to lose if he's healthy. Edited March 16, 2018 by Philioyamfugi

According to Wikipedia: The san'yaku can be split into two groups: The senior yokozuna and ōzeki, and junior sekiwake and komusubi. san'yaku (三役) Three ranks. The "titleholder" ranks at the top of sumo. There are actually 4 ranks in san'yaku: yokozuna, ōzeki, sekiwake and komusubi, since the yokozuna is historically an ōzeki with a license to perform his own ring-entering ceremony. The word is occasionally used to refer only to sekiwake and komusubi.

Yatagarasu 352 Posted March 16, 2018 19 hours ago, robnplunder said: I am sure he has a lot of skills but has no physical size to be effective, hence, the henkas. But I believe he has to use them judicially & timely to be effective. Being a small guy myself, growing up playing physical sports against much bigger guys, I understand what Ishiura and other small rikishi must do to survive. They do not have whole lot of options to overcome their size disadvantage. Henka is one of the few options they have at their disposal. I will be watching Ishiura and other little guys with much interest to see what they come up with to beat the guys twice their size. BTW, before Ura was injured, he was starting to use more henkas b/c, IMO, he has reached what he can do to beat the bigger opponents without resorting to henkas. He too was clumsy at it, not like Harumafuji was (and why the heck he'd resort to henkas as a Yokozuna & his size/speed is beyond me). Ishiura much more impressive today. Re Ura, don't forget he was nursing a lighter knee injury in the last two basho before the big injury so I'd like to give him the benefit of the doubt that he was trying to preserve himself or perhaps experimenting. He is certainly bad at them though, and they don't suit his style. I've no doubt said it elsewhere, but I just don't like seeing henkas literally every day as we have with Ishiura. It's like he settles into a pattern with a favoured move that he uses to death (and to his detriment). About two basho ago it was starting with a low tachiai. Did it literally every day for about 5 days running and lost each time, but didn't learn from it. I don't know, he just seems to lack tactical spark, which is a shame. Never thought I'd see Kaisei jointly leading on day 6. What the....? Ah, poor Abi. He's been fighting like a demon, but he needs to control how he advances and not be too over-eager. He'll learn, but only through falling flat on his face a few times. I think the Ichinojou-Chiyotairyuu tachiai measured a cool 4.2 on the Richter scale.
