Regarding Endo, 2-2 is nice...

Endo is actually 3-1, having beaten two ozeki and a sekiwake. He's exceeded my expectations already.

---

Mitakeumi redeemed himself today with that excellent win over Ichinojo.

How did Takakeisho manage to keep his balance? Tochinoshin struggles to deal with the unexpectedly agile Pilsbury mascot - 1-3 against him now...

I noticed on Day 3, Kimura Youdou was the referee who oversaw Kakuryu's dohyoiri.  It would seem that the four sanyaku gyoji are taking turns overseeing Kakuryu's dohyoiri.  (My TV Japan broadcasts don't always show the dohyoiri so I can't confirm this.  Anyone?)

I should have picked up on this during the last tournament, Hatsubasho.  Prior to January, I can only assume that Shikimori Shonosuke Inosuke as the sole tategyoji, was overseeing the final Yokozuna-dohyoiri each day (i.e., each of Hakuho's dohyoiri from days 10 through 15 in Fukuoka in 2017).

Yes, when the tate gyoji is absent, sanyaku gyoji take turns to fill in their duties, not just dohyo-iri but also the kaobure gonjo announcement of the following day's torikumi - Kimura Yodo pictured below doing that during the Hatsu basho.

Interestingly, you can see Yodo has a tanto tucked into his obi in the picture. I've also noticed sanyaku gyoji carrying tanto during Yokozuna dohyo-iri, but not while officiating bouts that would normally be done by tate gyoji. Maybe those ceremonies are seen as so important that a sanyaku gyoji is temporarily considered an acting tate gyoji for those few minutes?

Interesting match-up way way  down under in Jonokuchi  tomorrow. Naya, Taihou's grandson, against Houshouryuu, Asashouryuu's nephew.  They have met twice before-once when they were amateurs, and the second time last basho in mae-zumo. Naya won both bouts. Both are 2-0 at the moment.

I don’t think Kakuryu and Aoiyama being leaders is all that surprising. The latter in particular ought to be there given the rank he’s fighting from.

The latter has been injured a lot lately and just got back from Juryo. His record so far is surprising but expected if he's healthy. Nobody outside of the Kakkai knows what these guys' condition really is.

Compared to day 3 that was insane!

Endo 3-1 at M1! I felt like this could be a breakout tournament for him. Perhaps he could pull a Tochinoshin and lose to Kakuryu but win everything else for a yusho.

Takakeisho-Tochinoshin BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! How did Takakeisho not lose his balance? Then the overly dramatic fall off the dohyo(Laughing...), big upset.

I thought Mitakeumi would lose for sure as soon as he stuffed himself into Ichinojo, that was very surprising to me he was able to win so easily.

SHOHOZAN!!!

I've never seen Kaisei move so much in a bout, he looks very determined this time.

ABI!!! So much fun to watch him, just four long limbs flopping and flying all over the place yet he's somehow winning.

Ikioi might have had the most impressive win, steamrolling Asanoyama while injured and 4-0 now!

I've been very impressed with Daishomaru this time he's looked dominant the last two days, maybe he's finally breaking out from being the most nondescript rikishi in Makuuchi.

Terutsuyoshi beats Enho by double arm strangle twisting neck throw, showing again why he's one of my favorites!

Interesting (and effective) technique from Mitakeumi today, wedging his hands in Ichinojo's armpits and pushing up. Kept Ichinojo away from his belt and let Mitakeumi push up and back, negating Ichinojo's very heavy base. The big guy seemed to have no answer once Mitakeumi went forwards. Smart rikishi.

Ichjinojo was unmovable until Mitakeumi did so today.   I didn't think Ichinojo with his current form would lose to Mitakeumi.   Anyway, I think both will do well in this basho.

Endo .... hmm.   He's on a roll at M1.

A kachikosi would mean instant Komusubi for Endo?

maybe you want to ask Tochinoshin if a KK as M1 is enough for this promotion... ;-)

but ofc, I know that Endo is whole other number

Only if there were a slot available. A Sekiwake or Komusubi would need a makekoshi. After Day 4, K1w Chiyotairyu is 1-3.

Goeido lost to Endo, more than Endo defeated Goeido. (I don't want to take anything away from Endo's skill, but Goeido seemed to make things easy for him.). At this point, Goeido's chances at the yusho seem to be getting slimmer.  Interestingly enough, Ikioi is getting good results despite his apparent injury.  Osaka fans seem to be rallying behind him, since they see Goeido struggling.

Takakeisho's victory over Tochinoshin was amazing and fun to watch.  As much as I am rooting for Tochi, Takakeisho showed some real fighting spirit and kept his opponent from getting his preferred hold on the mawashi.  That strategy along with Mitakeumi's brilliant strategy against Ichinojo may just open some eyes, and jeopardize Tochinoshin's and Ichinojo's yusho chances in this tournament.

Mitakeumi suddenly made taking care of the immovable Ichinojo look very easy.

Takakeisho always goes all out, typically, in straight line.   He had to do a little dance to beat Tochinoshin.

Is it me or the basho?   There seem to be more 1 second bout in this basho.   Tachihai, slip, and fall.

After the incident, does he still think that? Maybe this description/profile is not updated. Perhaps the one in-charge of the graphics isn't too familiar with what's going on in the sumo world and it was an oversight. Or perhaps they put it there intentionally as an easter egg for Kinta to find. Hehe.

I saw Myogiryu twitch an eyebrow in front of the gyoji after the bout. That's the only reason I could think of for there not being atleast a mono-ii there.

How on earth did Myorgiryu win that one? He was down before Aoiyama's foot stepped out. Aoiyama definitely won. In the very least, why wasn't there a mono-ii?
