Basho Talk Haru 2018 (SPOILERS)

Which rikishi has the best roll when they hit the floor? Arawashi or Kotoyuki? (definitely not Yoshikaze who usually ends up landing on his head).

Ichinojo looked strong today. He handled the Geek with ease.

Arawashi's break-fall there was even better in slo-mo - you could see the moment he realised he'd lost grip of the arm and was about to face plant and just bailed.

(Watching Kotoyuki roll off the dohyo is easily one of the most satisfying things to watch on any given day. Nothing against him, he just rolls so well.)

Ichinojo's looking strong! I could see only Kakuryu or Goeido stopping him, and that's taking into account that Kakuryu will be in for all 15 days.

Poor Takayasu. Hopefully he can rebound from back-to-back losses and at least KK so he won't go kadoban again.

Tamawashi at M1 is a serious threat, at least 10-5 record is expected but i think it will be 11-4 with a kinboshi.

This could be Mitakeumi's basho. He is on fire, and not hampered by any major injury. I predict he will start the Ozeki run this basho.

He's on a 7-basho Kachikoshi streak in Jo-i. The scores have not been good enough to start a run, but the quality of his Sumo is IMHO. He just has to avoid some of the silly losses. In those 7 bashos he gathered the experience to turn the closer matches to his favor.

Anyone see Terunofuji-Gagamaru match? Did Terunofuji actually win well or did Gagamaru beat himself?

Not terrible from Terunofuji but Gagamaru looked awful. Oh well, a win is a win. Hopefully it will help him mentally.

He looked bemused to me.  A win, but not a good effort by him at all IMO.

I'd say relieved -  it was a lucky escape.

How early did Goeido move!?

That's Terunofuji's first win since day 3 of september 2017... not a particularly stunning win, but it's a win.

While I was "hoping" to see good outings from Enho, Yago, and Aminishiki (just because), all three sekitori in Juryo have lost their first two bouts of the Spring Tourney.  Takagenji, however, is off to a solid start.  With Kyokutaisei at the top of the Juryo heap, I am still hopeful that this will be the tournament where he breaks through to the Top Division.

How sick is Terunofuji this basho? I knew about the diabetes last basho, is that still the issue?

Kakuryu won by using that dreaded push down of his, a move that cost him 3 of his loses last basho; Endo  got his kimboshi last basho against him anticipating this move;  this time Kakuryu used twice consecutively and it worked but I would be really careful about keep using it so often during this basho if I was him.

Does anyone know if Hokutofuji is injured ?

Not sure whether Hokutofuji is injured or not, but he seemed to give it his all in the bout against Yoshikaze.  There were two vicious skull bangs which he inflicted, and his jump back off the ring did not suggest the he was being conservative due to any physical injury.

He relies on that pull-down too much, and too often it backfires on him, so I imagine he was thinking, "That was lucky, but I'm gonna get a bollocking off Izutsu-oyakata tonight!"

---

Here's one for the conspiracy theorists (something that occurred to me last basho): has the Mongolian syndicate finally given Ichinojo the nod following the departure of Harumafuji?

Much earlier than Arawashi, that's for sure. I thought for a moment it was a matta.

So did I. But Arawashi is just gun shy so far and Goeido looks  hyped after the loss Day 1.

Glad Aoiyama seems relatively healthy. As long as that holds, he'll probably play havoc down there at m-17.

Kaisei and Ichinojo are looking solid, too. Ichinojo in particular is looking like he's going to be a handful for opponents this time around.

Looks like Gaga beat himself rather than Teruno beating him.

Mitakeumi looked good again.  Let's get that Ozeki run started, eh?

Shodai could not handle Takakeisho.  He seems to settle in mid-Makuuchi level.

This is Ichinojo's basho?   Might as well be.  He looks like the one to beat in this weakened field.

Soooo.....this basho is all about heavyweights, isn't it?  B-)

Seriously though, they perform admirably so far. Especially Kaisei looked exceptionally nimble and focused against Abi. Sanyaku is looming, unless Kaisei B takes over again.

Tamawashi fought really well to keep Tochinoshin away from his mawashi.

Mitakeumi looking good, I hope he keeps winning.

Kakuryū somehow going 2–0, that’s a good start at least. Let’s hope nothing bad happens.

Aoiyama also looking good at that low level, I hope he puts up a good score.
