...and once again, the selection of the official calendar pic (Kakuryu dohyo-iri) turns out to be quite prophetic.

Which will obviously be broken by the next Basho.

What will be broken? Kakuryuu's legs?

It seems Nakagawa-beya's Kasugaryu will perform the yumitori-shiki this basho, taking over from Satonofuji. Kasugaryu has twirled the bow at jungyo events before but this will be his honbasho debut.

At the age of 33 years and 9 months, Kasugaryu will be the the third-oldest rikishi to become yumitori-shiki performer in the modern era. Satonofuji was the oldest, beginning his reign at 35 years and 8 months.

I thought they had to be in a Yokozuna's stable. Or does he count for Kakuryu because he is in the same ichimon and Izutsu-beya is small.

I thought we had a clairvoyant poster when I saw the 'SPOILERS' thread up two days before the basho begins...

I guess that still doesn't resolve the issue of whether Nakagawa-beya is part of Isegahama-ichimon or Tokitsukaze-ichimon...

This is nuts - two yokozuna out at the start again? It seems like it's been forever and a day since all the yokozuna began and finished a basho. For a couple of years now it seems there is some kind of injury curse affecting the yokozuna rank.

The curse is called "old age". There really isn't anything more to it.

Anticipation of what is to come is the best thing about sport.

Time for someone to stake a claim as the next Yokozuna.

I'm expecting a great Basho - bring it on.

Don't they always?  I subscribe to NHK World here in NZ and sumo is always bilingual.

Sorry apologies, I realise now you mean on their website, not the satellite broadcast.

Is there any specific reason for this change, because Satonofuji is not retiring? Or is it normal to change the twirler now and then? Satanofuji had that function for quite a while, right?

I believe because there is no longer a Yokozuna in his heya.  Of course, there isn't one in Kasugaryu's stable either, but I think given the lack of rikishi in Izutsu-beya (Kakuryu), they went for someone in his ichimon.  But then there's still a Yokozuna is Satonofuji's ichimon (Hakuho).  So, shrug.

Sad for the loss of Enho in his first day in Juryo. I hope that it does not disturb his sumo for the following days. The adversary was heavier than him and Enho had a hard time  in his attempts to surround him. The final attempt to win was cool yet.

Ishiura worked the Kotoyuki's bulk against Kotoyuki. However, I wonder what Ishiura exactly attempted to make in the tachiai.

Tochinoshin was very well. Representing the style that gave him the anterior basho.

I don't remember a day with that early finish without any sudden kyujo

If day 1 is any indicator, we'll be having another Kakuryu vs. Tochinoshin basho. But day 1 is almost never any indicator. So I'm interested who we'll actually be seeing in the yusho race by day 8. (Maybe Ichinojo vs. Tochinoshin this time?)
