Kintamayama 44,200 Posted February 13, 2018 (edited) The Kyokai Relapse Prevention Committee has organized a "training week" with all sekitori to help prevent bad things happening. They are lectured on how to conduct themselves in public, reminder not to drive, no gambling etc. "I have no questions.." said Hakuhou later. "The rikishi should go about their business as usual and not think about this too much. If they will be honest, there will be no problems," said Oguruma Oyakata senior executive manager. A new platform will be created where the rikishi can bring up their grievances and make requests. BTW, Takanoiwa did not show up. Yatagarasu 352 Posted February 13, 2018 (edited) Ah, and there I was, foolish enough to let my heart flutter at the thread title and think that a Relapse Prevention Committee might be working to help them prevent relapse into serious injury... (Takanoiwa) Absolutely nothing or a very serious head injury, depending who you believe. Possibly caused by Harumafuji hitting him repeatedly with a karaoke remote control, but we can't be sure. 2
Atenzan 1,074 Posted February 13, 2018 I might be wrong here, but I think that this will accomplish little and it's just a PR thing. I mean, if you're the kind of person to disobey the higher-ups and beat the crap ut of people, you probably aren't the kind of person who will have these practices changed by some kind of corporate seminar. I think the real play here is to remind everybody that oyakata are supposed to quietly get rid of serious troublemakers, and that what's being talked about in these seminars is exactly the type of stuff that (should) put you at risk of being thrown out. Scandal prevention at the Kyokai is never about getting people to honestly reconsider their actions, it's about putting the fear of god into them. (Unfortunately, much of sumo's violence issues stem from exactly the same approach to discipline...) 4 3

yutarotanaka 104 Posted February 16, 2018 The Kyokai is covering their bases. It can be a convenient way for the sumo association lessen a bit public outcry and to not take too much heat in case another scandal hits the sumo world because of bad behavior of a sumo wrestler. "We reminded them in this seminar! We gave them a strong telling-off! We even did it while giving them a stern look on our faces and wagging our index finger at them warningly!" Hopefully, this is just a start of their campaign to make sumo environment more safe and secure. I would be disappointed if this is their whole strategy to discipline and keep the sumo wrestlers in their best behavior and image. Having said that, I also hope that they find a balance between strict sumo code and having to be able to live a free, almost normal life. In this way, pent-up stress endured by sumo wrestlers through hard relentless training and other sumo related duties can be released in a healthy way and the wrestlers would not resolve to acting up in ways that cause trouble for everyone in sumo. These are people too and they need to be cut some slack from time to time and not feel strangled by their chosen profession and way of life.
