VirtualSumo 3 Posted February 11, 2018 Thanks very much for posting this. A very impressive result - irrespective of who will say "it doesnt matter". As I've said on other threads, with no supporters, I think this man will be Ozeki this year.
Yamanashi 2,919 Posted February 11, 2018 I know, it doesn't "count"; I know, the other guy's hurt, but what a relief to see Tochinoshin finally beat Hakuho.

Kintamayama 40,611 Posted February 11, 2018 (edited) The 42nd Japan Ozumo one-day knockout tournament was held at the Kokugikan today. It has no bearing on anything and doesn't count record-wise, but there is some degree of prestige, even if the guys are supposedly not going all out, although there is a prize. That was a long sentence. The winner gets 100,000 ($900) yen for each win and 2,500,000 ($23,000) yen for the yusho. Tochinoshin was the winner, as we all already know. He got a bye for the first round, beat Ikioi in the second round, beat Hakuhou (whom he has never beaten in honbasho in 25 tries) in the third round ("I'd like to beat him at least once in honbasho," he joked later..), beat Hokutofuji in the fourth and Okinoumi in the fifth and beat Tamawashi in the finals -all 5 wins by yorikiri. Total money tally- 3,000,000 yen ($27,500), some prime beef, and more.He received the Cup from his Oyakata Kasugano. "It's different when your Oyakata hands you the cup. I was happy. I'm feeling great since I experienced something I never experienced before.." he said. He has cut done on his rice consumption and weighs now 7-8 kilos less than in Hatsu at 166 kilos. "I have become lighter by losing some weight. Less heavy, but more speed," he added. Next basho will be held in Osaka. "I overeat during the regional bashos because there is a lot of great food out there. Last November in Fukuoka I reached 182 kilos and my old knee injury flared up.." he admitted. His aim is for around 173 kilos. "I'd like to do good, spirited sumo in Osaka. I shall gambarize!!" he summed. Dapeng 231 Posted February 12, 2018 Tochinoshin was also awarded a top-rank black wagyu ox! I wonder how much beef such an ox can produce?

Senkoho 552 Posted February 12, 2018 I think what Benihana means is that the word 'ox' is usually used to refer to a castrated animal.

I just watched the last one on You Tube, and it went about as you'd expect when you have two guys who have been retired a few years that are an ex-Ozeki against an ex-Komusubi who is 7 years older. I guess it's more about the name power and popularity than about the skill level you'd expect these guys to be at, because they are matched much better in that regard (with the best-known guys last). But in general, do the oyakata volunteer, or are they told it's part of their job now?

The strangest part for me was Kitataiki fighting in the old guys division when he's on the same banzuke they're still using for the regular competition. The fairest I think would have been Kotooshu-Kitataiki (most successful and most recently retired) and Wakakoyu-Takamisakari. I like the concept though, fun seeing the old guys fighting again, ecspecially Kotonishiki last year. Perhaps they should hold a seniors tournament instead of elections....
Kintamayama 40,611 Posted February 13, 2018 (edited) The old boys thing is all for show and Takamisakari will be there till he’s 60. The former rankings and current skill have no bearing here. It's an elderly comedy sumo thing which the fans seem to enjoy more than all the other bouts put together.
