Yukiarashi 195 Posted January 25, 2018 Well that made things more interesting. This is shaping up to be a spectacular end to the basho! Kakuryu and Tochinoshin are tied at 10-1 but it's Kakuryu that has all the hard opponents left. Tochinoshin has Ichinojo which could be a problem, but not too much else available as he's beaten Tamawashi six straight times. Right now there's two left in the yusho race, but Takayasu could force it back open in a couple of days. Daieisho's still there too...... Great win by Tamawashi! Kakuryu had a Kak up though trying to pull. This makes it really interesting now as a 3-7 Sekiwake was able to win so soundly against him. He still has Takayasu, Mitakeumi, and a potentially KK seeking Goeido on the last day. Tochinoshin has an easier schedule, but Kakuryu seems to handle pressure well. Goeido! Again! Four days in we were saying Yokozuna run, now he's losing to a legless hopping Arawashi trying not to directly stand up. That being said incredible effort the past two days by Arawashi 6-5 now after a great throw with Aminishiki knees. Takayasu won. Okinoumi lost.... Mitakeumi's fallen off a cliff. Shodai has really improved over the tournament, but what happened to Mitakeumi? 7-0 now 7-4 and just looked lost in all four of them. Takakeisho-Yoshikaze is going to be a fun rivalry for years to come, they match up really well with each other. Takakeisho grabbing an arm and doing nodo-wa was a great way to follow up. Close one for Tochinoshin. Takarafuji really fights top guys well and nearly had another upset. I was actually surprised they didn't to a torinaoshi, as much as they robbed Terutsuyoshi the other night for being airborne. 10-1 TOCHINOSHIN!!! He has a better chance of a Yusho right now than Kakuryu does if you ask me. He just needs to not choke, like his Kasugano stablemate a couple of years ago. That would be a nice surprise. Chiyomaru 7-4? How? He might end up in joi for Haru Shohozan-Ikioi was hilarious and nuts, until it wasn't. Those instant tsuppari battles are hilarious to watch. Abi won by touch against Tochiozan. Easiest Makuuchi win in a while by forcing out of the ring. Terunofuji is back.... That was sad to watch as Joaoiyama said he just looks like he lost all his strength and his legs look weak. What was he thinking today? He was an Ozeki two basho ago, he outweighs Ishiura, a diminutive M15 that's 5-5 by 60 kilos and he didn't think henka was a possibility? Ryuden looking strong 7-4. Daieisho still has a slight chance.... Juryo leader Kotoeko loses, but so does all of his 7-3 challengers. So he still leads followed by seven mediocre 7-4 guys. Juryo living up to it's reputation again. Finally,Yamaguchi is completely in Daikiho mode now, 2-9 five of his last seven bouts's kimarite have ended in "taoshi", including three in a row by Oshitaoshi. Tiger Tanaka 222 Posted January 25, 2018 7-4 at this stage is still a good record, but disappointing for fans of Mitakeumi given the 7-0 start and hopes of it being a potential ozeki run. He could still go 3-1 to finish with a double digit kk. In the long run, this might not be a bad thing. He just turned 25 and if he's not ready, he's not ready. Let him develop for a few more tournaments, continue to develop his lateral movement and mawashi techniques and make the push when he's ready instead of a premature promotion that leads to the kadoban carousel. 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
wys 55 Posted January 25, 2018 Wow, beautiful win by my man Takakeisho over Yoshikaze on day 11, hanging by a thread to keep from being demoted. So far, quite a few of his bouts have been pretty violent. I just hope somehow he can modify his style for the sake of his healthy and longevity in sumo. ScreechingOwl 343 Posted January 25, 2018 Tochinoshin looked very nervous before the bout and in his false start, but came through with very solid sumo. He has a real path to the yusho now. wys 55 Posted January 25, 2018 Wow Tochinoshin I think is going to get the yusho, despite his pre-match jitters, if Kakuryu doesn't get over his losses mentally. And Ichinojo is a beast. One shove and Yoshikaze goes flying. It seems like no one in the past several matches with Ichinojo has been able to move him even an inch. And poor Takakeisho is now mk. I am pretty sure Kotoshogiku pulled on Takakeisho's hair or am I just seeing things? If he did pull on the hair, what is the usual penalty, if any? And last, but not least, I think I have a crush on that beautiful woman in red with the glasses in the front row. She is like one of the regular fixtures I see in the audience. Well, I said I wanted more of that Ichinojo and he delivered. The mind reels at the possibilities, but let's wait and see. If he's finally over his injuries and has his mind right, though... Takakeisho still not quite there yet, but he's learning. Mitakeumi...I don't know what that was. Five losses in a row now, right? Get it together, man! RabidJohn 1,663 Posted January 25, 2018 I'm assuming Mitakeumi is injured, because I can't see any other reason for his sudden propensity to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Maybe he strained something trying to move Ichinojo... Wys beat me to describing said Ichinojo as a beast! I thought he was trying to break Yoshikaze, keeping a tight hold of his arm while giving him that vicious nodowa. He's probably Tochinoshin's only stumbling block now on the way to a yusho. I'm on the Tochinoshin yusho bandwagon now, enjoying the ride as long as it lasts. It'll be a fantastic pinnacle to his career if he manages it, but I don't trust that knee of his over the longer term. I feel similar about Ichinojo; I know he's capable of awesomeness on the dohyo, but he can equally be a spiritless lump of lard when his back's giving him some gyp. Katooshu 3,132 Posted January 25, 2018 (edited) Very excited for tomorrow.Kakuryu has the tougher match by rank, but right now Ichinojo is outperforming Mitakeumi (Goeido as well); it's the best I've seen him in a while. It will be big if Tochinoshin can get through that tough challenge.. Is Kakuryu vs Takayasu likely for day 14? Right now Takayasu seems the most likely to hand the yokozuna another loss. By rank, it should be M1e Hokutofuji (3-9) and M3e Chiyotairyu (5-7). By record, it should be M8w Kaisei (8-4) and M9e Shohozan (8-4). There is also M5w Endo (7-5) and M7e Chiyoshoma (6-6). Yatagarasu 352 Posted January 25, 2018 Mitakeumi visibly winced on the sidelines when he saw Yoshikaze being despatched by Ichinojo. That was a savage move given the height/build difference. Disappointing to see Abi henka again, but at least there was a fight afterwards and he acquitted himself well so overall he deserved the win. Tochinoshin looking a bit tired, but fighting through it. Good man! I think he may struggle against Ichinojo, but this basho has been full of surprises. Sad to see Aminishiki struggling. But he is old and wise enough to not resist if they catch him at the wrong angle rather than risk wrecking himself for the sake of a few extra seconds on the tawara (and still lose). Takayasu may hold the key to the outcome of this basho. His physique carries a lot of advantages (tall, strong, solid, heavy, reasonably uninjured) and his fairly recent high tachiai is working well for him. 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
