Rocks 1,807 Posted January 24, 2018 Lotta upsets and a lot of bad sumo. Not a great night to be a spectator. The guys look tired and hurt. Interesting hopping style Arawashi has developed for not being able to stay on his legs long. Good win for Tmamwashi and now this thing is wide open. That loss is too soon for Kakuryu. Terunofuji totally should have expected ishiura to henka but it's still disappointing to see as a spectator.

And consistent to boot. I hope this is an upward arc for him. The Shohouzan-Ikioi bout would have made E Honda proud. I agree and I am rooting for him but he looked VERY tired.
Rocks 1,807 Posted January 24, 2018 Question of the day: Takyasu has his KK. Does he think he is still in it now that Kakuryu has lost? Or does he give Goeido the back scratch?

Onibushou 61 Posted January 24, 2018 So you're telling me Tochinoshin and Kakuryu are the wrestlers that aren't injured?
Amamaniac 2,078 Posted January 24, 2018 Terunofuji returned to competition for what exactly? More black stars? If he finishes the tournament with a 0-4-11 record, I wouldn't be surprised to see him drop to Juryo, where he will still not be healed. I admire the Isegahama ganbaro spirit, but this is getting ridiculous! Back in 2015, I was convinced Teru would be the next Yokozuna. Now I don't know if he will ever make it back to the sanyaku... Maybe dropping down to Makushita is what he needs. That seems to have worked for Tochinoshin, anyway. But at least Tochi had the good sense to sit out three tournaments and get right.

That Isegahama 'spirit' is the reason Teru can't/hasn't/won't sit out to heal. It makes me mad at Isegahama-oyakata to see Terunofuji on the dohyo these days.

That doesn't, however, mean that he will definitely win today's bout. But I am sure Takayasu will want to stay close-ish since anything could happen at the top of the leaderboard. If Goeido were kadoban and this were Day 14, then just maybe Takayasu would sacrifice one for his fellow Ozeki. But that is not the situation here.
Joaoiyama 307 Posted January 24, 2018 Terunofuji lost ALL of his muscles, his legs look extremely thin and shaky, his upper body is all fat and he lost 10kg!!! What are they doing to this guy and why ruin a great young rikishi?

Akinomaki 40,037 Posted January 24, 2018 (edited) Kisenosato has resumed training at Tagonoura-beya today. He declared that the next time he'll enter a basho, it's do or die. Thorough healing comes first, and then he'll consider if he enters Haru. http://mainichi.jp/articles/20180125/k00/00m/050/107000c Edited January 24, 2018 by Akinomaki
Dwale 419 Posted January 24, 2018 Well, well. Tamawashi hasn't seemed entirely on his game this time, so I was blown away by his win. Probably less so than Kakuryu, though, teeheehee.

RabidJohn 1,719 Posted January 24, 2018 That tsuridashi from Tochinoshin appears to have bereft Mitakeumi of his mojo. From a 7-0 start to looking like he might not KK at all! Does anyone know if he's injured? I never imagined I might be fancying Tochinoshin's chances for the yusho, but he's faced his stiffest competition already, whereas Kakuryu has all his to come... Wow! I hate to say it of one I once thought was a cert for the rope, but Terunofuji looks like he should lose the mage along with about 80kg and get himself back to Mongolia while he's still young enough to have a life.

Kaminariyuki 498 Posted January 24, 2018 Good planning and adept execution on Tamawashi's part. And, he dealt Tochinoshin back into the yusho hunt! I've not been a fan long enough to see a European take a yusho. I'm pulling for the tall pink boy. He's wrestling well, so it seems he has a shot. Maybe we'll get an extra match on Day 15? When you are up against an unbeaten Yokozuna on Day 11 you probably need to adapt your tactics - something very few of Kakuryu's opponents have done up to now. The Mongolian Sekiwaki might yet make his Kachi Koshi - unthinkable this morning.
