Kawabata 270 Posted January 14, 2018 Whats with the music playing in the background of the commentary constantly on Abema? Is that playing in the arena and they're picking it up on the mic?

Is that playing in the arena and they're picking it up on the mic? well considering the "normal" NHK coverage from Mbovo, it can't be (answering my own question). So in that case, I revise my question to, why on earth are they doing it...
NeutronGirl 21 Posted January 14, 2018 Yeah I watched it all the way through. The music is super annoying and the ads became very annoying. The stream was very good quality and very stable though. For reference, we use (and pay for) Private Internet Access as our VPN and they are excellent. I would rather have sumo than no sumo! Obviously I'll keep watching Kinta's excellent summary every night as well.
NeutronGirl 21 Posted January 14, 2018 @Kawabata the music is definitely not playing in the stadium, they are adding it, god knows why.

And yeah the stream was very stable and high quality, but I just prefer the NHK coverage I think (no music, no ads, yes please), so I switched over to Mbovo's stream pretty quick. Will also be watching Kinta's round up of course
Akinomaki 39,790 Posted January 14, 2018 (edited) No time limit shown for the VODs - they said they show all basho live this year, so we may be able to see the basho VODs the whole year. This is a TV channel after all, so you only have to open the top link on this page every day to switch it on: https://abema.tv/search/future?q=大相撲 It goes on till makuuchi then. They repeat makuuchi on live TV now. The VODs are listed here https://abema.tv/search/past?q=大相撲 Makuuchi had broadcasts on 2 of their channels - so there a 2 links for that, jonokuchi till juryo only with 1 link for the sports channel. We can also expect videos later, both here (now only for Asashoryu) https://abema.tv/search/video?q=大相撲 and on their YT channel - ozumo playlist: Hatsu basho extra playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLGNyX8GCuBE00Ck3jLT0I4jWh2pg63ryZ Edited January 14, 2018 by Akinomaki
Edwardoho 23 Posted January 14, 2018 Even when in japan it seems the easiest way is to use Kintas YouTube channel! Thanks kinta.
Otokonoyama 2,735 Posted January 14, 2018 I quite like it. Especially the little personal blurbs about the sekitori. This guy is called --- by his mates. So-and-so is afraid of ghosts so refused having his own room. His favorite thing is money. And this other guy was brought up in a sushi shop and likes ***. The one over there, his parents are vintners, and his wife likes this comic. Great stuff.

Akinomaki 39,790 Posted January 14, 2018 (edited) There are no CMs in the VODs, those parts are simply missing - and with this most of the kensho parades: a pity, that's my main reason to watch makuuchi there instead of with NHK streams. I have less breaks in the broadcasts due to bad connections in the VODs than in the live one. If they also don't start the one month countdown for the VODs tomorrow, I'd call this a real milestone in sumo internet coverage - if also not like it was on USTREAM the videos disappear at the start of the next basho. 808morgan 805 Posted January 14, 2018 (edited) Well so far I have the lower division working. I already pay for Private Internet Access and I can change the VPN to Japan. OK I have upper division working, not much load time and quality looks good. I'm having trouble finding the menu with all the expected sumo broadcasts again. I watched Moti so I could see what happened first! I see this calendar for sports, easy enough to see the week here: https://abema.tv/timetable/channels/world-sports Edited January 14, 2018 by 808morgan

The production graphics are good, too bad they have the music. Oh now at the end with the commentary they have some really crap Japanese rock rap. I used to go into Tsutaya and get a movie to rent as fast as I could to escape the J Pop, I feel that way now. If they played this music during the bout I would have to mute it.
Rocks 1,807 Posted January 14, 2018 Abema worked well but the graphics took up too much of the screen. Felt like I was watching a cable news program. Commercials after every makuuchi match were bad too. Really breaks the flow of watching it.

Kintamayama 44,354 Posted January 14, 2018 In their PR, they said it was going to be "dynamic and vibrant, to bring in the younger audience." I didn't expect less. Commercials? Small price for this. Now, let' s see them make it international.THAT is the main problem.
Asashosakari 18,786 Posted January 14, 2018 (edited) Only watched some during the lower divisions, not makuuchi: Good: - having the shikona on screen at all times in the top-left corner. Makes it easier to see at a glance who's on the dohyo if you come in and you missed the detailed graphics. Bad: - black on red is not exactly the most legible colour scheme for text graphics. - no east/west designation in the displayed rikishi ranks. - rather puzzling choices of what bouts to grace with a replay. Really bad: - that #%$&# annoying, constantly flickering LIVE logo in the top-right corner. Strange: - for some lower division rikishi the graphic with the vital stats also included the shikona in romaji, while for others it read OZUMO LIVE in the same spot... Akinomaki 39,790 Posted January 14, 2018 I won't watch the Abema live stream again - unless I know I can't find anything else for 2 days. The VODs are perfect - no CM, the preview allows it to find the bouts I'm after - I'll rather watch the rest of the VOD of the previous day than the live thing. With a free stream I can't complain about them ruining the sound of sumo - and virtually destroying the juryo and makuuchi dohyo-iri - my favorites.
Akinomaki 39,790 Posted January 16, 2018 Unfortunately, the 1 month countdown had begun the next day - the VODs can only be watched for 30 days.
Senkoho 552 Posted January 18, 2018 Do they always have someone who knows absolutely nothing about sumo as a guest on Abema? They have to explain EVERYTHING to Ms. Kuramochi Yuka today. It gets irritating after some time...

She just said it was her first time ever watching sumo :) You may be right, guests like these are probably being invited so that new fans can learn something, too. The same way Hiro Morita on the NHK side tends to explains/repeat a lot of the sumo basic to the first time viewers (almost everytime he is on air), at least his enthusiasm is infectious until one is inoculated by the 2nd basho. Asashosakari 18,786 Posted January 28, 2018 Abema cutting to commercials during both the lower division yusho ceremony and the sanyaku soroibumi, astoundingly braindead decisions today.
Akinomaki 39,790 Posted March 9, 2018 (edited) No change for Abema - all days free from jonokuchi till the end, but: watching outside of Japan is only possible by setting your browser to a Japanese proxy or with a VPN for that purpose - and you only got to see sumo when there is no CM going on. This is a TV channel, so you only have to open the top link on this page every day to switch it on: https://abema.tv/search/future?q=大相撲 It goes on till makuuchi then - should it stop after juryo, go to the above page again and open the new top link The VODs of all daily broadcasts with CMs cut out are listed here: https://abema.tv/search/past?q=大相撲 - they can only be watched for 30 days. There are also videos: https://abema.tv/search/video?q=大相撲 and on their YT channel - ozumo playlist: https://www.youtube.com/watch?list=PLGNyX8GCuBE0S6MvcNVYjTTLtGHwmLHl9&v=EZ43LOuy68M Now the channel has 2 new PR interviews for the basho with Tochinoshin and with Kaisei: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZ43LOuy68M there likely will be more Edited March 9, 2018 by Akinomaki
