Shoot. My gamble on putting Hokutofuji at Komusubi is going to cost me a lot of points all the way down in GTB.

Onosho may remain as West Komusubi, but he moves up 2 spots relative to the top of the banzuke.

Thumbs up for the slotting of Tamawashi/Takakeisho/Onosho. Surprisingly low position for Chiyonokuni given that he had a joi schedule - small penalty for one of his 6 wins having come by fusen?

Asanoyama is much lower than I thought they would have him, but I can't say I disapprove considering he had a demotable record.

Looks like no major surprises in juryo and makushita-joi...my would-be GTB scores there are 43/56 and 38/60, which doesn't sound like that much, but almost all my misses were very minor (juryo 6x one spot, 1x two spots; makushita-joi: 12x one spot, 2x two spots), so I'm happy with that. I did think my placement of Daiseido and Chiyootori was very lenient already, but they even went half a rank easier on them.

Satoyama (Ms5e 2-6) ended up at Ms20w...still a bit of a bonus from the 8th bout win, but not as much as I thought they would give him (I had him at Ms18e).

50 points at GTB to start the New Sumo Gaming Year - not bad.

Got lucky not getting punished for my "mistake" of somehow switching the Komusubi ranks (Takakeisho K Tamawashi).

50 for me as well- I'll settle for that although I thought of swapping Chiyotairyuu-Kotoshougiku which cost me 4 points.

One thing I quite can't get my head around is how Yutakayama ended up 2 full ranks above Asanoyama. Also, the recent trend persists, even in upper makuuchi, that banzuke luck favours the rikishi with fewer wins. The lower ranks and Terunofuji stung me a bit but that was to be expected.

Kudos to the Kyokai for ranking the 11-4 M1 duo above Ounoshou, but it's kind of bizarre, given that they did, that Takakeishou wasn't given the sekiwake nod.

Well, I don't play the game, but I'm also a little disappointed in a mere M1 for Hokutofuji. They cheaped out. He should definitely get back at them by getting some more kinboshi before he enters the san'yaku where he belongs.

Nishikigi with some luck. 40th by position in Kyushu, gets a 7-8 moves up to 39th by position.

On a side note, it is very weird to see Terunofuji and Aminishiki at the same rank. I never could've guessed I'd ever see those anywhere near one another again.

It's taken 4 years, but I think I have a good idea of the story of almost all the guys in the makushita joi.  Still a few that I'm hazy on, but I've now been around long enough to have followed the vast majority since their entrance, since having been sekitori, or because of their high rank for their age at some time in the past (like Hakuyozan, who's been treading water for almost 3 years).

... and Takanoiwa checks in at J3.  I'd like to see him back to Makuuchi division after this basho.    Ditto for Ura but I think he is too far down, not to mention his current health.   He may slip down to Makushita for all we care after this basho.

So, Daiamami is the lucky loser, 6-9 at M14 is normally a demotable record but, in these circumstances, he gets one last chance at M17.

Haha, that is a bit funny, but I am happy for him :)

Kyokutaisei is now ranked juryo 1, and hopefully ony one kachi-koshi  from makuuchi.

Takakeishou shin- Komusubi. "No, the Oyakata hasn't said a word to me since the banzuke was announced. Still, I have learned many important things from him regarding life outside of the dohyo, like eating healthy and the importance of sleep.. " he said at the morning press conference today. "I have my own thoughts regarding the latest incidents, but I don't have anything to say,  and even if I did,  I am not in a position to say anything. I'm aware of everything, but I like to sleep so I go to sleep. I'm just going about life as usual," he said. Takanohana was not there, as he only joins his deshi in these affairs when they get promoted to Juryo.

So Mitakeumi needs 16 wins to reach Ozeki? Seriously though, the new guys are really starting to make their mark on lower sanyaku, they now occupy 2 komusubi and a sekiwake spot, and on top of that, maegashira east 1 as well

TV shows this morning were full of speculations regarding Takanohana’s absence from the press conference, although everyone knows he shows up only for Juryo promotions. Odd and needless. Yaku Mitsuru the cartoonist and media darling sumo expert: "I guess he didn't want to cause unnecessary bother, as the media were sure to ask him questions regarding the incident.." Another guy from the Tokyo Sumo  Press Club: "He probably did not want to rain on Takakeishou's parade on this important day for him. " My take?  " Takanohana never shows up for press conferences with his deshi, unless it's a Juryo promotion. " But nobody asked me.

Man, sometimes, you know, like, I feel like taking a remote control and maybe changing the friggin' channel.

Maybe if your remote control doesn't work, you could try hitting it on something. That's what my dad always used to do and most of the time it seemed to work.

In other news is anyone else feeling dizzy and lightheaded?

Don't actually take this seriously my dad is a good peaceful guy who repairs old bicycles as a hobby

An interesting list of shikona changes to start 2018.

Three rikishi change a character but keep the same reading of their shikona. Mimurodake changes the first kanji of his shikona, the new one is also the first kanji of his hometown of Gose, Nara prefecture. Urutora changes from one tiger to another, now the third sign of the Chinese zodiac. Meanwhile, Akinohana simply changes the 'no' in his name.

Among rikishi receiving their first proper shikona are two from Takasago-beya. Asayamabana marks his Makushita debut by changing to Asakishin (fierce god), while Asamorimoto is now Asakoga (tiger teeth). Good, solid sumo shikona there.

Elsewhere, Tagonoura-beya's Tanaka becomes Akashiryu, honouring his hometown of Akashi, Hyogo prefecture. Tamanoi-beya's Yamamoto becomes Kiyonoumi, while Odake-beya's Osuzuki is now Miryuzan.

Asakayama-beya's Kaiseio has returned to his previous shikona of Kaisho, however the second kanji is different to that of the earlier shikona. Odake-beya's Daiseiryu has reverted to his family name of Sakai.

Dairyuki makes a confusing change - dropping the first kanji and changing the reading of the rest to Tatsuki (his actual given name), and taking the Dai as his given name component. So for clarity: Dairyuki Masahiro changes to Tatsuki Dai.

And finally, a welcome change for 40-year-old Momochizakura who has switched to Sawaisamu, the first kanji is the same as in his family name Sawahara. I guess this was motivated by the retirement earlier this year of Momoko Tsugunaga, the former pop star who inspired the old shikona.

Mk12w Akinohana (安芸ノ花 > 安芸の花)
Mk57e Asayamabana > Asakishin (朝鬼神)
Sd8w Kaiseio > Kaisho (魁勝)
Sd78w Yamamoto > Kiyonoumi (清乃海)
Sd99e Asamorimoto > Asakoga (朝虎牙)
Jd14e Mimurodake (三室岳 > 御室岳)
Jd41e Daiseiryu > Sakai (坂井)
Jd92w Urutora (宇瑠虎 > 宇瑠寅)
Jd102w Osuzuki > Miryuzan (己竜山)
Jd104e Tanaka > Akashiryu (明石隆)
Jk1e Dairyuki > Tatsuki (竜輝)
Jk6e Momochizakura > Sawaisamu (澤勇)

An 11-4 at M3 and still a maegashira (first time that's happened). That's bad banzuke luck for you!

Looking at the banzuke, it seems the Kyokai should have put Takakeisho at S2e, Onosho at K1e and Hokutofuji at K1w. That way, (1)Takakeisho leap frogs Onosho, (2) Onosho gets promoted from west to east and (3) Hokutofuji gets promoted to Komusubi. My 2 cents worth.
