Katooshu 3,138 Posted December 5, 2017 (edited) I was reading about former M1 Kushimaumi, and his amateur accomplishments are unreal. Just to name a few: 3x high school yokozuna, 3x student yokozuna, and 2x amateur yokozuna ( a runner-up another year as well). Hes the only high schooler to become amateur yokozuna and also took it it in his first year at Nihon University. He even made the best 16 in his first year of high school! He won 28 titles while in university. Kotomitsuki was another standout who came about a decade later, and he was 3x world champion, back to back amateur yokozuna, and won the triple crown of college sumo by also taking the student and Kokutai championships. He won 27 titles while in university. What other names stand out as all-time great amateurs? I dont have a great historical grasp on the amateurs (or pros!) so it's hard for me to go beyond these two. Edited December 5, 2017 by Katooshu

Note, however, that Kushimaumi was not an outstanding professional -- demonstrating once again the great difference between amateur and professional sumo that many did not manage to bridge.
