Finally ending his amateur career with a failure to reach even the main tournament at the All Japan championships, Kounosuke Naya, 3rd son of Takatoriki will be the first grandson of Taiho to enter ozumo, in Otake-beya, as announced earlier. Shinnosuke Tanahashi, 3rd year from the Nobeoka high judo club will enter Musashigawa-beya. Musashigawa-oyakata was having an eye on him for 2 and 1/2 years now. He won the yusho in the judo 100kg division at the prefectural interhigh this year: "It is a relentless world, but to please my parents, I want to give my best."

He will start keiko at the heya on the weekend and plans for a debut at the Hatsu basho after passing the shindeshi-kensa on Jan. 10th.

This gets more attention.

With the judo team Tanahashi finished 3rd in the national high school championships. He got attracted to the image of rikishi "Who doesn't get subdued by injury and fight hard and in sweat". "I want to show to my parents and friends at home an impressive figure on the dohyo." - as sekitori on general TV

He couldn't avoid the standard comment, with an addition in the mood of today: "I aim to become a yokozuna that doesn't lose to the big bodied foreigners."

The oyakata: "I want him to make good use of his long arms and legs and become a rikishi that does speedy sumo."

At least he's realistic.

It'd be a shame if his career high was juryo. Does he really have what it takes for makuuchi, much less have what it takes to live up to Taiho?

He is still very young, so has a lot of room to grow his skill and abilities. It will all come down to his self motivation, willpower, work ethic, and ability to learn and adapt.

I think we shouldn't expect him or his brothers to be as great as Taiho, at best we should expect him to reach maegashira.

They even look more like Takatoriki imo.

maybe one of these kesho mawashi - they don't have one at the heya, friends who have it will provide it - the oyakata: "Because it's him it can be allowed, because he's the grandson."

The 9 passed the initial check - and Naya is of course the focus, 188cm, 166kg - Taiho had 184.5cm, 75kg and in the end 187cm, 153kg

They should consider raising healthy rikishi instead of (visceral)fat ones, hope he slims down so he can grow muscle and subcuntaneus fat.
Bigger ins't better, imo you should enter sumo with not much fat so they can grow healthly and not die or have serious health problems at just 50, we need new rigorously supervised diets for this new era of HUGE rikishi or the worst is still to come.

I don't think Naya is a sumo you can consider "fat". With his very sucessfull school career, he had build a solid sumo body. With his size (188 cm) his 166kg don't seem too much. He will for sure grow in height so he can go until 180kg no problems.

I agree. There is too much huge rikishi. A lot can slim down and be better like Ichinojo, Chiyotairyu, Kaisei, Terunofuji, Kagayaki, Daiamami... There are getting too big to be agile and the risk of injury increase at the same time.

Just look at what did Harumafuji and now Chiyoshoma, Arawashi and co. You can be a sucessfull rikishi with less than 170 kg.

Hope some Oyokata will notice it...

It was announced today that Byambasuren has obtained the show-biz visa needed to do sumo and will start at the Hatsu basho. o But not his shikona.

No pics of anybody else, but at least a mention - even as related to Naya: Nakanishi (18) for Sakaigawa-beya, from the Buntoku high sumo club - he lost to Naya in 5th year wampaku and at the kokutai last year.

Nakajima (or -shima) (18) for Tamanoi, from the Miyazaki Nichidai high wrestling club (120kg division) - his father is from the US.

Tanaka (22, 176cm, 155kg) for Kokonoe, from the Sapporo university American football club - wants to become like the shisho (Chiyotaikai)

But the oyakata are obsessed with raising Japanese pushme-pullyou forward moving rikishi.  Are they too lazy to teach yotsu techniques?  They do not seem to notice that the top positions are dominated by technical rikishi rather than by the overweight pushers..

I've read that it will be 豊昇龍, but I haven't found a reading. Hoshoryu? Or perhaps Toyoshoryu? The first kanji is from his shisho, the last from his uncle. The middle is more often read as nobori and means ascending or rising.

Takarafuji, Tochinoshin (both actually have semi-visible sixpack when strained after match), Okinoumi, Chiyoshoma, Shohozan...all of those I deem more interesting than the true fatsos.

But overall the shift to "empty fat" is disturbing, definitely, and increase in amount of really fat rikishi...really concerning

He's just starting sumo so he will get way bigger from now, i think the average rikishi bulks about 30kg since the debut, that would make Naya about 200kg, that's Kaisei/Ichinojo size, plus he's like 19, look at all the greats, almost none started heavy like that, the perfect sumo body should be built through muscles and healthy fat, not saggy tits and beer/fast food bellies.
