Hakuho misconduct (split from Basho Talk Kyushu 2017)

Recommended Posts

Hakuho may have thought that it was a matta because of Yoshikaze's delayed start at the tachi-ai, but that doesn't excuse him from what happened afterwards. That was just, awkward

Knowing that, why? Just because he felt strange? Because he sensed he was to lose the match?

I don't think it's very complicated. Here's what I think happened. He hits Yoshikaze at the tachiai and it feels differently than the other 16 times they fought—due to his new method—and assumes he has jumped the gun. Since he respects Yoshikaze, he stops fighting. You can see him let go of Yoshikaze's body almost immediately after the tachiai. The quick yoritaoshi only happened because Hakuhou didn't offer any resistance.

It was a really stupid mistake, and he most certainly feels embarrassed about it now.

There is a huge difference between doing something stupid backstage or on top of the dohyo while millions are watching. ;-)

But I agree with you, that a plain apology is everything Hakuho will facing.

I think Hakuhou is probably too smart to not simply apologize and cut his losses. I sincerely doubt there will be any serious repercussions. It was stupid of him to hold himself back after the tachiai considering the exact same thing happened in Aki.

Hakuho to Harumafuji: "Watch me overturn the shimpan on the matta."

Hakuho: "OOooooppppssss."

Trying to get help? I rather think he was frantically signalling for the mono-ii that never came.

(unless I missed the tongue in your cheek, of course) B-)

I personally think that Hakuho's original plan for the fight was to do a matta intentionally and slap Yoshikaze in the face to intimidate him. And then go for a second tachi-ai to start the "real bout". But that just went wrong.

Yeah I could see this being a real possibility.

I think you guys are all crazy. Hakuhō knew the bout was on but Yoshikaze’s go-no-sen worked well and he got a morozashi, Hakuhō tried grabbing the uwate with his left hand but missed, you can clearly see up to that point that he’s fighting, and it’s way too late for a matta. After he fails to grab the uwate and Yoshikaze gets morozashi, he just stops and pretends it was a matta.

That was pretty bad.

I hope he’ll just apologize and it won’t be a big deal. Congratulations to Yoshikaze on a successful strategy.

In my opinion, anyone who thinks Hakuhou deliberately gave up on a match against someone he has only lost once to (and that one time was when he had a knee injury) is just speaking nonsense. He has Yoshikaze's number. He can probably win against him 95% of the time even if his opponent has a morozashi. It's the fact that he can consistently beat Yoshikaze that probably made him so angry about the match being wasted like that. There's no way in 10,000 years that Hakuhou would ever consider deliberately pulling a trick like this—and even if he did, he wouldn't make such a public display of it if it failed. Everything about his reaction indicates that he truly believed it to be a matta with every fiber of his being.

Fortunately for him, in a few days, he'll have the opportunity to speak to the crowd (as he accepts his 40th yuushou), and explain that he was wrong and that he wishes to apologize profoundly to Yoshikaze and the shinpan. And that will be the end of it.

I'm trying to recall something from 2-3 basho back (it could have been last basho). IIRC wasn't it Harumafuji who stopped at taichiai during a match because he thought it was matta? When the match was called in favor of his opponent there was no big reaction from him (in public), and the public reaction was on the lines of 'what an idiot, everyone knows you keep going until the officials say it's over'. Anyway whoever and whenever it was, there could be no bigger example of behavior contrary to Hakuho's in the same situation.

You know, I'm kinda glad this happened, for one reason: it demonstrates in no uncertain terms that the sumo enterprise is bigger than any individual, no matter how dominant or esteemed he may be. You slip up, you pay the price. Hakuho should be more embarrassed by his own reaction than by his error in the match.

Does him beliving it was a matta, excuses for behaving like a petulant child? For demanding a mono-ii, despite the fact he has no right to do so? For not bowing after the match? Does it?

Hakuho's antics were an act of utter petulance, pure and simple.

Although better than Asashoryu ever was, I simply would never mention Hakuho in the same breath as Futabayama, Taiho, Kitanoumi and Chiyonofuji.

It seems to me rikishi have no...I mean NO right to be calling a matta..it's the goyji's call..just like American football play till whistle blow. Do you think the fans want to see  a 35yr old Yoshikaze ozeki run,  or Hakuhou going for the Zensho yusho record at this point.

No way in hell anyone would ever consider that bout a false start, they were in perfect sync. Hakuho's reaction indicates he deliberately tried to cause one, but it backfired massively and he lost and made himself look bad with the post-bout reaction. The only reason why Hakuho would think that start was a matta is that the idea was already in his head before the actual start, because there is no shred of a matta in the actual bout.

[Donning tinfoil hat] Maybe he wanted a way to keep the yusho race interesting and was not in the mood to perform yaocho, so he chose to default in a non-conventional and controversial way (with the small side-effect of drawing a little attention from the Harumafuji/Takanohana mess).

*MODS- Maybe we should have a dedicated thread (for the future)  regarding Hakuhou's actions today? I feel there will be a lot of talk..

Wow, a Dai-poster-zuna calling for the mods to split the thread?! Wonder what the admin-rijicho is gonna say about this...

I think these drinking binge with Harumafuji is reducing his brain cells.  He stood there now knowing what to do.  I think he was just confused that Yoshikaze beat him.    ;-)

I think he felt that Yoshikaze barely moved so he thought that a monoii was called, but if this was planned to throw Harumafuji's scandal under the rug he needs something better than throwing a tantrum. Also the gyoji and shinpan should call upon him instantly on situations like this, they called Takagenji back when he didn't bow, it's not because he's Yokozuna that he can change the rules in favor of him and this is comming from a Haku fan.

It is the bottle and the ice pick, man. Someone took the ice pick and bored the pick into his head using the bottle as a hammer to lobotomize him.

As fas as I can recall, a mono-ii has *never* been held because of a supposedly missed matta call. Makes Hakuho look triple stupid.
