Basho Talk Kyushu 2017 (SPOILERS)

Recommended Posts

Tochinoshin should be a good test for Okinoumi as well as Yoshikaze for Hokutofuji on Day 13.  Rounding up to be a good group of matches as long as Okinoumi and Hokutofuji take care of business today, and even more dynamic should Hakuho find a way to lose today as well

Now I think there shouldve been a mono-ii for that one. Close call but Aoiyama looked to stay in long enough to me.

Tochinoshin overcomes Asanoyama in a good yotsu battle. I think theyre matched well stylistically and will be in more of things.

Takarafuji looks like he's never putting any effort into his matches, but his relaxed style seems to work well and his opponents often end up faultering after having taken the lead offensively.

The lower third of Takakeisho's face is messed up from the Shohozan beatdown. He looked in considerable pain after beating Tamawashi and I wonder if he's got an injured jaw.

Pretty tough asking Takakeisho to do an interview with his mouth looking like that...

He had to take a few deep breaths before mounting the dohyo after his win, looked like he was holding back vomit to me :(

My boy Giku's having a rough time climbing back up through sanyaku. He's got the spirit, he just can't pull out the wins.

It's a pity the gyoji didn't call a matta in the final bout - Hakuho would have exploded right on the spot. B-)

I wonder what they would call that technique.

Aoiyama was robbed.

How did Gōeidō lose that one after the morozashi…

Is Takayasu hurt?

@Fay would hit you with a beer bottle for making such a suggestion.

Anyway, he needs to earn enough dough to support his family and his eventual heya, so I doubt he can afford to retire just yet.

I usually drink wine ... but you are right (Laughing...)

He is still hurt from the injuries that sent him kyujo in September. My guess is that after safeguarding his rank, he can concentrate on not aggravating his condition.

Congratulations to Takakeisho on his first joi KK - but that's surely more than just a fat lip he's got there. The whole side of his face is swollen and he's obviously in a deal of pain with it.

Yoshikaze also looked to be in agony with his big toe, which didn't look pleasant in the replay, so we have situation where the two active sekiwake can only muster one big toe each!

Takayasu looked injured again, too...

I certainly want Aminishiki to get wins, but Okinoumi needed it to at least keep up a nominal role in the yusho race. So, I'm glad he took the win in this case.

Yes, it does look like Kotoyuki went down before Aoiyama stepped out. I guess they gave it to Kotoyuki since he was the aggressor? If so, I wish they would be consistent about that. I guess it's also possible there was a mass derp among the shimpan. Wouldn't be the first time.

Chiyoshoma: Well, if you must henka, then try to do one like that.

Looks like Tochinoshin'll be able to claim his kk this time, despite his injury. Here's hoping he'll be well for the next one and put on a good showing.

When Tamawashi got Takakeisho on the tawara, I was sure that was it. But no! Excellent movement from Takakeisho there. He's both faster and stronger than he looks.

I hope Yoshikaze is ok. Good match, though.

Surprisingly entertaining bout between Goeido and Ichinojo. Goeido is usually the sort of rikishi who either wipes the floor with you, or else gets his behind kicked all up and down the dohyo, so it was nice to see him demonstrate that he has some good defensive chops in his arsenal. Didn't seem much able to move that big ol' slab of Ichinojo, though. Does this mean Ichinojo is finally going to achieve his true potential? I wish, but probably not. Still, we can hope.

I know it's not going to happen, but just imagine a three way playoff between Hakuhou, Okinoumi and Hokutofuji. The perfect ending for a crazy basho.

With so many crazy basho I would like one or two normal-to-earth-13-2-yusho-basho, with no drama, good sumo and none going kyujo. :-|

In his KK interview, Takakeisho's upper lip looked swollen and twisted (even the interviewer asked about it), and despite saying that he was fine, he could barely talk clearly.  He bravely hid his pain, although a tear was seen rolling down his left cheek.  Sumo is a tough sport, and wrestlers have to put up with a fat lip or worse.

It's a one-win lead in the Top Division.  Day 13's torikumi will see Hakuho face Takarafuji, Hokutofuji face (a possibly injured) Yoshikaze, and Okinoumi face Tochinoshin.  Will any of the front runners falter (i.e., will the race for the yusho stay close)?  Hakuho's road ahead looks fairly clear.  Will Hokutofuji and/or Okinoumi keep him honest?  Here's hoping there will be some drama inside the ring, after all the drama outside the ring.

As for the Juryo Division, Sokourai has a three-win lead, and only needs one more win to secure that championship.  Guess I jinxed Kyokutaisei, but at least he already has his KK and will move up the banzuke.

Shoji wins the jonidan yusho by beating Torakio in a back and forth belt battle. Torakio's grip seemed to slip right before losing and he looked very frustrated. Like their first match Torakio forced him back to the edge but couldnt finish the job.

Shoji has now won their 3 meetings (accounting for all of Torakio's losses in ozumo) but 2 of them were highly competitive and Torakio strikes me as having more potential given that he's 3 years younger, has far less sumo experience, and is lighter.

Shoji is now 14-0 but doesnt really impress me. I also thought he looked totally out of his depth in his round of 32 match at the 2015 University Championships, which I recently watched. Making the best 32 there is his only notable college result I believe.

Not to sound like too much of a downer about him (Laughing...)

Tochihiryu henkas to take the makushita yusho and a trip back to juryo. Kiribayama sure didnt like that and gave him a dirty look afterward.

Last basho, Aoiyama was awarded a win when he actually lost. This one is just a pay back.

Takayasu kyujo from today.
