Yubinhaad 11,546 Posted August 10, 2017 Former Juryo Dewaotori has announced his retirement after a 13-year career. A former high school Yokozuna while at Meitoku Gijuku school, he made his ozumo debut in March 2004 and swiftly rose to Makushita, reaching Juryo after two years. His three-basho stint there ended with a terrible 2-13 record, and he was never able to return as numerous injuries kept knocking him back. Asashosakari 18,786 Posted August 10, 2017 Certainly one of the bigger what-if stories in sumo in recent years (KK in juryo as a 20-year-old!), made even more prominent by how long he decided to stick it out even when it became apparent that juryo wasn't going to get back in his reach. Diabetes-related issues reportedly played a big role in his loss of ability. Best of luck to him in his future life! DB link: Dewaotori
Orion 431 Posted August 11, 2017 He was very helpful with Mitakeumi when he was coming up the ladder, sort of waiting on him but also showing him how to behave like a sekitori. A tactful job of helping a junior rise to a height he himself wasn't going to reach again. Orion
