New recruits for Kyushu 2017

http://www.hochi.co.jp/sports/sumo/20170805-OHT1T50201.html

Fresh off being awarded runner-up honours in this year's National Inter-High tournament, it's being said that Asashoryu's 18-year-old nephew Byambasuren indecipherable-patronymic (スカラグチャー・ビャンバスレン *) is set to join Tatsunami-beya. Ryuonami, the stable's last of at point three foreign rikishi, retired back in March. Byambasuren's debut is targetted for November, which I take to mean he'll get the usual one-basho delay and actually step on the dohyo in January after finishing up his coursework, as is customary for many joining out of high school. (Edit: Or perhaps not, see posts below.)

More background in the linked post as well as the follow-up in the same thread over in Amasumo.

* Apparently the father is not one of Asashoryu's well-known two martial arts brothers, but a different one not mentioned before?

A few more earlier mentions of Byambasuren on the forum: 2016 Inter-High, 2016 Kokutai. And a previous article by Sports Hochi from back in April when Byambasuren (then still listed as a 17-year-old) got to have some keiko against Hakuho.

I was about to post him as new recruit for Aki, because the article says that he will enter Tatsunami-beya (apparently very soon, to be in the shin-deshi kensa for Aki) and will have his first dohyo appearance in Kyushu.

Asashoryu's nephew Byambasuren (guess) finished 2nd - from the Nittaidai Kashiwa high -  he lost to Tottori Jouhoku's Amalsanaar (guess), both from Mongolia.

A high school yokozuna from Mongolia is a first, and the nephew is proud to have surpassed the uncle (3rd in 1998).

the runner-up has mentioned before that he wants to go into ozumo after graduation next March. He has no mongol-zumo background, came to Japan to study wrestling, but after watching ozumo in summer of his first year he switched to sumo, so he's doing it only for 2 years now. In his first year he was in the 60kg range and now is 108kg at 187cm - still growing. His best 50m time is 5.8s. Uncle Asashoryu told him: "Make it to a strong sekitori by your own power."

The sumo part of the koukou-soutai (inter-high) started today in Tottori.
Aiming for high school yokozuna is the nephew of Asashoryu, Byambasuren (17, 184cm, 96kg), ryugakusei, 2nd year at the Nittai-dai Kashiwa high, who after one year in Japan and less than a year in the sumo club already won the yusho at the Kanto championships (below). One year ago he had only 67kg. He first was in the wrestling club but his uncle urged him to go into sumo.

Dream (of course): "As a pro surpassing Asashoryu."

I'm not fully convinced, but let's retitle the thread for now.

He will be interesting to watch. His amateur results have been impressive considering his light weight and lack of sumo experience.

He wants to join pro sumo, hatsu dohyo iri might be in Kyushu, considers Ootakebeya,

I can add that the article talks about the third grandson of Taiho (Konosuke? Naya (17) - not his older brother, who went to university) who is in his third year at powerhouse Saitama Sakae Highschool.

I'd be more than surprised to see him join any other heya than Otake, considering its historical development under Taiho and Takatoriki.

P.S.: I guess this might fit a thread called "New recruits for Kyushu (?)" ... well, maybe??

I'm still pretty sure that I'm going to have to rename this thread back to Kyushu for Byambasuren in the end anyway, so it's okay. ;-)

Just to add, the article about Naya says that he'll be turning pro after the (junior) Kokutai in early October. That's also the main reason I don't actually expect Byambasuren to be in the September shindeshi examination.

Especially since he's already planning to take over the heya - but the article quotes him as "I'm still considering."

there's a whole thread BTW about all 4 Nayas (and as amateur Kotokamatani)

On 8/3/2017 at 18:21, Akinomaki said:

Fortunately the other 3 Nayas are in (amateur) sumo, the 2 youngest are now in high school - and hopes for the Saitama Sakae team. 3rd year Kounosuke (right, 190cm, 160kg) is the team captain for the upcoming inter-high, Kousei (185cm, 130kg) is 1st year now.

The 2 in primary school had very bad eating habits, no vegetables etc., and didn't show promising results then. Saitama Sakae coach Yamada brought the obese Kounosuke into shape - he couldn't even get out of a car without help: "Like that I'd definitely be sick now. Lucky that I left home." Kounosuke won the national select high school tournament in March, Kousei last year was in the best 8 of the national middle school championships. Kounosuke: "I want to perform well in makuuchi and inherit granddad's and dad's Otake-beya." Kousei: "I want to test my strength in ozumo, like my revered dad."

Yamada: "Kounosuke is fit enough to succeed in ozumo, Kousei I'll forge from now on."

Not much is heard from 2nd son Takamori at Chuo university.

I guess Takamori being not that promising and 1st son Yukio having to fight grave illness for a whole year (and maybe before) also is a result of the bad eating habits at home. I wonder if Yukio would get a ticket to enter ozumo after reaching 23 as a successful athlete if he should find out that pro-wrestling is not the thing for him after all.

"Poor eating habits at home"? Isn't his father Otake Oyakata and his mother the okamisan? Or, am I mistaken?

The former Otake-oyakata and -okamisan - Takatoriki the gambler: apparently they had a diet of sweets and hamburgers all day. They got all kids like to eat and weren't pushed to eat the things kids should eat to grow up healthy.

In the meantime, the other Mongolian  バットバヤル・アンハバヤル  now christened  陽翔 山    (Hishouyama?)  passed the tests for Aki and will be entering Aki? , which is the code name for Kyushu I guess..Joined Tokitsukaze back in April, his uncle (a Mongolian sumo Yokozuna) and Hakuhou's dad are close friends. He trained at Miyagino for a month (March) before joining Tokitsukaze, and was seen beating Makushita guys in training, prompting Hakuhou to remark that he should be climbing the ranks quickly. 19 years old, 185/120. Grip power-80 kilos each hand. Normal for a 19 year old- 42 kilos. Dorsal muscles (I have no idea what this means..)- 250 kilos-normal for ages 19-26 - 145 kilos.. Seems very awesome indeed.   "I'd like to become a sekitori soon. My benchmark is Hakuhou!!" he declared.

Yikes, I should have re-renamed the thread more quickly. Could the previous two posts be moved to the real Aki recruits thread then if that guy was in the examination, please?

Another one from Aomori for Isegahama-beya: Yuuki Kimura (18), 3rd year, from the Goshogawara commercial high school sumo club: "I will do my best to reach juryo within 2 years." The heya has a koenkai in Goshogawara city.

0926z.jpgo

He was featured at the beginning of the year in a documentary http://www.ntv.co.jp/document/backnumber/archive/post-38.html

https://ameblo.jp/skyblue-junior/entry-12240019429.html

Unfortunately, the videos are of an awful quality (YT) or of an awful site (Miomio TV - takes days to load)

He plans to start in maezumo at the Kyushu-basho http://www.mutusinpou.co.jp/news/2017/09/48255.html

Ah, some possibly very notable newbies. I definitely need to show up to watch all day, in case some ot these fellows are wrestling. Can't wait for the bansuke and to visit Fukuoka again. Even if Ura won't be there, the wrestling and tonkotsu ramen will still be very good, I'm sure.

Since this thread:

and this article:

https://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1876594.html

confirm that Naya Kounosuke will be entering Otake beya and will make his debut in Kyushu 2017, you can most likely change the title of thread now.

Naya is postponing his entry to January, since he wants to participate in the All Japan Competition  that gives the winner a College Yokozuna status.

10 applied for the shindeshi-kensa

First double-digit count in Fukuoka since 2003.

In addition that's 91 new sign-ups for the year, up a little bit from last year's 88 and the first time since 2008 to have reached the 90s.

Aside from being Taiho's grandson, Naya Kounosuke is also the son of former Sekiwake Takatouriki.  At 17 years of age, he has announced his intention to join professional sumo, the earliest possible debut would be in the upcoming Kyushu tournament.  According to the article, he is still considering the decision.
