Interhigh 2017

Results of the preliminaries yesterday: http://kirokukensaku.net/0IH17/discipline_120_20170804.html

Individuals today: http://kirokukensaku.net/0IH17/discipline_120_20170805.html

Asashoryu's nephew Byambasuren finished 2nd - from the Nittaidai Kashiwa high -  he lost to Tottori Jouhoku's Amarsanaa, both from Mongolia. The best 32 had 2 more foreigners, but the countries of origin aren't listed in the data - so the guess: Mongolia. Jamin, also for Kashiwa (next door when I'm in Japan), seemed more like Egyptian, but is also from Mongolia. He lost the 1st bout in the best 32 to Tomurbaatar Temuren (guess), who lost his next one - a name looking most Mongolian - Ulaanbaatar and Temujin included. Another Temuren was at the same Kibougaoka high in 2011.

A high school yokozuna from Mongolia is a first, and the nephew is proud to have surpassed the uncle (3rd in 1998).

NHK had the best 32 live, but on BS, so most likely no video will appear - and the Interhigh TV stream video stops just at the point NHK took over. The winner as usual was only thinking of the team event tomorrow - he won against his Tottori Johoku team captain in the semi, but the runner-up has mentioned before that he wants to go into ozumo after graduation next March. He has no mongol-zumo background, came to Japan to study wrestling, but after watching ozumo in summer of his first year he switched to sumo, so he's doing it only for 2 years now. In his first year he was in the 60kg range and now is 108kg at 187cm - still growing. His best 50m time is 5.8s. Uncle Asashoryu told him: "Make it to a strong sekitori by your own power."

Naya made it to the best 32

but lost in the 1st round of the final tournament.

In his losing bout he had to cope with a matta and lost concentration. His feet didn't move well and he landed flat on his face after a yoritaoshi. With a bloody left eye, flustered: "Frustrating. I plan to go pro. I'll train more to avoid losing like this." http://www.sanspo.com/sports/news/20170805/sum17080520360003-n1.html

The first foreigner in 95 events, Mongolian high school yokozuna Amarsanaa, a 2nd place by Maenoyu in 2003 was the best so far for a Mongolian and a foreigner in general.

Amarsanaa at age 15 won a same age mongol-zumo tournament and in spring 2015 he came to study in Japan. He was in the best 8 last year. This year he gained 15kg to 135kg now. http://mainichi.jp/articles/20170806/k00/00m/050/031000c

Kanazawa gakuin defeated Tottori in the team final 3-2 to win the yusho again after their first 10 years ago. http://mainichi.jp/articles/20170807/k00/00m/050/021000c

Amarsanaa won his bout, but the last 2 both lost at 2-1 for Tottori.

Saitama Sakae lost to Tottori in the semi 2-3, but at least Naya won his bout. Kashiwa didn't qualify for the interhigh.

I like the results rather from the Interhigh TV site: http://www.inter-high-school.tv/sports/lists?sports=12&gender=1&event=group

InterHigh TV has now published videos of individual/team bouts. The videos of the final tournament, which weren't included in the live stream video: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqEZpXu06_UEH1k4ENfMAQQ/search?query="5日+相撲+個人決勝トーナメント"+-進出者決定戦

If you include in the search after tournament トーナメント  "2回戦," you get only the best 16, 準々決勝 for only the qf, 準決勝 sf, 決勝 the final. If you drop the "-" before -進出者決定戦 , you have the bouts to determine the best 32, which were mostly shown on the stream video, but not the last 10. The titles only show high schools names, not those of the athletes: to find  the 10 remaining bouts, add to the search from the result pages the left athlete's high school name: 2nd line on the left, before (pref.) - unfortunately the naming differs sometimes, longer or shorter.

Powerful yotsu sumo from Amalsanaar, and Byamba showing impressive skill for someone fairly new to the sport. I was particularly impressed with how quickly he was able to react to his opponents' moves...should be interesting to see what he's capable of with another 40kg or so.

I like what I see from the starting Saitama Sakae guy---I think his name is Saito.

Was that Naya who was injured in the qf?

Saito made it to the sf in the interhigh. The injured one is Kamiyama, Naya wasn't in the team. Saitama Sakae in the semi and final only started with 2 and gave the 3rd bout away - but 2-1 was enough.

Does the 'select' in the name of these tournaments suggest that they are used to select participants for higher-level tournaments, or that only a select group of top competitors are able to compete in them? Or is it without much meaning?

I've seen a lot of Saito's bouts and he's really stood out to me as being one of the most impressive high schoolers right now, though this is the first time I've seen him actually go all the way to win an individual final.
