Heyamates Yokozuna Kisenosato and Ozeki Takayasu faced each other in training yesterday for the first time in 3 months. 8-5 to Kisenosato. He lost 4 straight, but came back to win seven straight at some point. No taping on the injured arm.

Yokozuna Kisenosato went for degeiko yesterday for the first time since he left last basho midway with his left arm injury, visiting Ounomatsu beya and facing Ounoshou for 15 bouts. No taping at all on his arm. Everybody is optimistic.

Looks like it did go well, since he managed to stay clean.

What probably happened is that they finished the session with butsukari-geiko, and AFAIK the higher-ranked rikishi leads, taking the hits and providing resistance for the pushing, then initiating the throws for breakfall training.

Frequently, someone (Kintamayama) will post (Yokozuna) practiced against (non-Yokozuna) and went (w-l). In such circumstances, how does the non-Yokozuna beat the Yokozuna?

A lot of it is to do with rank. As a makuuchi rookie, Onosho wouldn't be expected (or expecting) to win; he's there for the recovering yokozuna to test himself against. Remember how Kisenosato practised with makushita and juryo opponents before the last basho? He was easing himself back in.

A day after his session with Onosho, Kisenosato has obviously decided he's fit enough to step it up again and has session against ozeki Takayasu, and there's a w/l figure for it. Even so, they will both have held back somewhat so as to avoid unnecessary injury.

Kisenosato's been on the other end. Marinating in the aura of the yokozuna. Good to see the perseverance paid off.

Well, Yokozuna Kisenosato was back at Ounomatsu beya today, facing Ounoshou again. This time they had 27 bouts and it was 22-5. Reporter says he is doing good, upping the pace daily. This is his third straight day facing Makuuchi rikishi. The last two days he was using his left more than usual to see what's what. Today, a bit less. "I guess during the second half of the session I used it in about 10 bouts, being able to push and do otsuke with my left (where he doesn't let his opponent get a hold, closing the way by clamping shut his left arm so there is no place to get a hold in). My condition is good.." he explained. "I don't need any taping at this point. The pain is mostly gone. I'm getting stronger day by day," he added. His heya has concluded their home training yesterday. He will be going out for training until everyone moves to Nagoya.

Well, even if I can't remember the names, I remember at least one Yokozuna/Ozeki becoming quite angry with his keiko opponent not going all out. The reason given: holding back is considered to be a much greater risk for injury! Lack of body tension, I suppose...

I didn't mean it in that way. Yes, the tsuppari and harite hit just as hard and the pushing is just as strong.

You see the holding back in the way they acknowledge a loss at the ring edge with step back and a tap on the winner's back, rather than resisting to the very limit and falling as a result; the same sort of thing that in a honbasho they would get warned about for not trying hard enough.

I could be totally wrong about this because I've seen far more honbasho footage than jungyo or training footage, but it seems to me that the effort expended in a honbasho is a step up from that in training or regional tours - with the exception of butsukari-geiko of course, which is always exhausting for the recipient.

Every single low ranker that gets a bit higher in the ranks for the first time and trains well for the basho but then gets obliterated, always says this in his shame interview for the press: "There is a big difference between hon-basho and keiko.." as a weak excuse. So you are probably right. See Ichinojou and Chiyonokuni last basho.

...shame interview...

I've noticed that the Japanese for "yusho interview" is "yusho interview", and that phrase of yours made me wonder, do they have [Japanese word for] shame interviews?

I'm imagining Kokonoe-oyakata telling Chiyonokuni, "OK, it's time for your shame interview. Try to look contrite!"

No, I meant interviews for the press, not the TV stuff when something is celebrated..

Yokozuna Kisenosato went back to Ounomatsu beya today to face 20 year old Ounoshou again after a two-day rest. This time he was 5-6. "I've been able to do excellent, intense sumo. Ounoshou has really become strong. He has added much power. I myself was able to do some serious training , " he said, smiling. "I think this is it for me with training in Tokyo (before moving to Nagoya). Resting for too long  has made me tired but I have been able to prepare my body well.. I'll be taking it easy for now," he added.

Kisenosato seems to have spent more intimate time with Ounoshou than I have with my girlfriend this week.

In all seriousness, 3 sessions for 53 total bouts, all within 5 days against a guy from another ichimon, what gives?

I guess most of the other heyas are either in Nagoya or taking it easy before the mass migration. Kisenosato wanted to get in shape gradually but thoroughly and found a good sparring partner in Ounoshou. And maybe the heyas are physically close.

Takayasu and Kisenosato were at it again today.  15 bouts. 9-6 to Kisenosato. No signs at all of his injury. "I'm starting the journey today. I hope to discover new things!!" declared Takayasu, sporting a new very white training mawashi. A lot of tsuki/oshi was seen, and Takayasu did throw Kisenosato a few times as well. "I perspired well. I will be consulting with my body and gradually increasing the number of bouts. I want to train so that I will have enough stamina to do well  till senshuraku, and go about it with a strong feeling and discover a lot of things!!" said Takayasu Columbus, who shall henceforth be known as "The Discoverer".

And Kisenosato? "I am gradually getting better. All I can do is do it seriously. It would be interesting if my sharpness and ring sense return, It's important to train very day," he said. And then, concerning entering next basho., "If I need to rest in order to get better, I will rest.. For now, I will do my best," he added, being careful..

June 30th -July 1st - the Nishonoseki Ichimon rengo keiko, with Tamawashi, Yoshikaze and Kotoshougiku slated to appear. He will be testing his abilities then, for sure.

Yokozuna Kisenosato and Ozeki Takayasu faced off again today. 21 bouts, Takayasu won 11-10. "Still a lot of practice bouts left, so have time for corrections," said Kisenosato. His back was a bit high and he even lost eight straight to Takayasu, but he's optimistic. He was looking  a bit dejected. "My body is taking its toll," he added later, hinting at fatigue.

Takayasu OTOH was a bit more pleased showing quick first steps and sharp tachiais. "I was able to take the first step and attack from my right.., he said. However, he did lose the last 5 bouts, apparently running out of steam. "I need to improve my stamina so I will try to  increase the number of bouts," he added.

Harumafuji trained at home yesterday. 20 bouts, 15-5, against the likes of Juryo Terutsuyoshi and Homarefuji. He practiced receiving his opponent at the tachi-ai and fighting under pressure. After that, he lent his chest to Takarafuji and Homarefuji for another 30 minutes, shouting encouragement and stuff and lighting a fire under their mawashis. Ten days to go to the start of the basho. "Well, I'm so-so.." he admitted. He had three of his 8 yushos at Nagoya. "I'll do what I have to do. I must not forget the gratitude I feel for being able to do sumo.." he summed.

Hakuhou trained at home yesterday for a good hour and a half and perspired well. He faced heyamates Ishiura and Yamaguchi for 16 bouts, winning 15. He was looking OK, says the reporter.

Today, Hakuhou trained at home again against Juryo Yamaguchi, Makushita Houkahou  and height challenged (1.69 meters) Jonidan protege Enhou (last basho's Jonokuchi yusho winner) for 15 bouts, losing 2. Ishiura was absent due to neck pains. The visitors especially enjoyed Hakuhou's six bouts against Enhou. He did win all the bouts but they were exciting. Enhou has won two amateur world championships (lightweight division)  in a row in the past. "My tachiai is better than before but I'm still not there. When I face the Yokozuna , I am reminded of my real strength.. In sumo, you need to respond quickly.." he said. "He is still  in the process of 'building' his body but he has a good thing going. He is small but he's good looking so if he makes it he will be very popular.." said Hakuhou. Hakuhou needs 12 wins to beat the all time wins record of 1047 wins held by ex-KaioU. "If I prepare well, I think it will come naturally.." summed Hakuhou.

Terunofuji's knee is still bugging him so no training for him this morning. "His knee is not in good shape so he's doing rehabilitation stuff and receiving medical treatment,  " said his Oyakata. He added that he was doing a lot of training in mid- June and did rehabilitation, took the medicine and worked hard on his upper body strength without a problem. Terunofuji is expected to return to  training from the beginning of next week. Terunofuji had 13 and 12 wins respectively the last two bashos. "If he aims for a zensho this basho he has a chance to become Yokozuna. He is aware of this.." added the Oyakata.

Kisenosato went to Oguruma beya for the Nishonoseki rengo keiko and had 21 bouts against Yoshikaze, losing 4 straight at some point. 9-12, as reported previously. He could not get a strong left grip. "Well, we have tomorrow..I'll make some adjustments.." said Kisenosato. "The Yokozuna is training while trying various moves, I guess.." ventured Oguruma Oyakata. "I was able to do fantastic good keiko. All I was thinking of was not letting the Yokozuna get that left hand grip.." added Yoshikaze.

Takayasu came to the Nishonoseki rengo keiko as well, but to the chagrin of the Oyakatas, did not do any serious keiko, just some pushing around with some Jonidan rikishi. He did have 50 bouts against Kisenosato these last three days. "I overdid it and my body is all tight. I know I should be going at it, but I'll be going at it at my own pace. There is no need for me to compare myself to others. After all, it's my own body," explained Takayasu, stating a unique opinion.."I was able to practice the fundamentals with the lower rankers and moved my body well, " he summed.
