WAKATAKE 2,631 Posted May 28, 2017 A very, VERY interesting sansho list for this basho. Shukun-sho: Mitakeumi Kanto-sho: Onosho Gino-sho: Takayasu, Yoshikaze
Masumasumasu 902 Posted May 28, 2017 7 hours ago, Dapeng said: What you said contradicts the fact: he is the greatest yokokozuna in history. Not possible for the simple fact that Hakuho continuously does things like this. The greatest Yokozuna in history is a man by the name of "?".
WAKATAKE 2,631 Posted May 28, 2017 NSK broadcast has mentioned that Nishonoseki will move forward with his recommendation of Takayasu's promotion to ozeki. He cited that winning against Harumafuji was a big factor in his decision.

Amamaniac 2,078 Posted May 28, 2017 During the broadcast Isegahama oyakata seemed surprised about Aminishiki having a shot at the Juryo championship on day 15. When it was mentioned to him, he feigned surprise and seemed to say: "I want him to try his best, then." I can't believe that Isegahama wouldn't be aware of this fact. I'm sure everyone in his stable was talking about it already on day 13... Also, that key Juryo bout will have two nishiki's (Aminishiki and Nishikigi) facing each other. Thought there might be a joke there, but it didn't come to me. Sigh...
WAKATAKE 2,631 Posted May 28, 2017 Yamatofuji finished his sekitori career today with a win and was presented with a flower bouquet by Takayasu while walking back to the hanamichi. He will return to his native Hiroshima to work there.

This is a major reason rikishi keep going when injured. Plus you know if you drop out of juryo you stop getting a salary but still have to pay your mortgage / rent / bills etc I didn't know rikishi had to pay rent, especially if they are single and living at the beya (like Osunaarashi). Amamaniac 2,078 Posted May 28, 2017 I watched the day 14 broadcast and once again they showed Hakuho coming out of the shitakubeya with his tsukibito. The plastic bowl was carried out and once again he bent over it holding the shoulders of two tsukibito. I raised the question of what the bowl is for earlier in this tournament. I thought autotroph's reply that it was a spittoon was the logical answer. But today, I noticed that Hakuho went through the same ritual (obscured from view) and the tsukibito walked away with the bowl containing a perfectly rolled red facecloth. I doubt Hakuho was spitting onto a facecloth. The facecloth was there for a specific reason. Furthermore, right after the bowl was taken away, Hakuho turned and spat into a large plastic bucket on the floor in the hall. Clearly, that was a spittoon, and not the bowl. I had speculated that there were smelling salts in the bowl. Anyone else have any thoughts? Has there been any mention in the press?
WAKATAKE 2,631 Posted May 28, 2017 It looks like Asahisho's knee buckled during the critical match between him and Satoyama, resulting in him falling backwards for the loss to finish 7-8 at J13w, and possibly opening up the spot needed for Iwasaki to clinch promotion to Juryo. Katooshu 3,132 Posted May 28, 2017 (edited) I had no idea that sekitori paid rent while still at the heya. Does the oyakata set the price? Edited May 28, 2017 by Katooshu
Amamaniac 2,078 Posted May 28, 2017 I wanted to weigh in on the whole debate about Hakuho resorting to a dameoshi at the end of his bout against Terunofuji. Teru did in fact make Hakuho work harder than he probably wanted. But what I noticed was that Teru's strategy seemed to be grabbing Hakuho's injured right arm. If that is the case, that might have pissed Hakuho off a little.
WAKATAKE 2,631 Posted May 28, 2017 Oh the DRAMA!!! That Juryo yusho playoff was something else. Two mattas, a torinaoshi, another matta, and just when Aminishiki might have had it, Nishikigi pulls off the hatakikomi. But it definitely was a crowd pleaser. Also Nishikigi stated he was wanting to give it his all in winning the yusho because his stablemate Fujiarashi is retiring after this basho.

Can't remember if that's a strategy he reserves for Hakuho.

WAKATAKE 2,631 Posted May 28, 2017 Though he lost, Takekaze competed in his 1182nd makuuchi bout, tying Tochinonada for 10th place for most makuuchi bouts. 9th place is Tosanoumi at 1183.
