BASHO TALK -- Natsu 2017 -- SPOILERS

Recommended Posts

If he wrestles like this tomorrow and Tuesday, I think he'll be out by day 4.

Did you really expect that he stays the full 15 days in this basho?

Kitazakura surely.

Asanowaka and Kakizoe used to do this too, I seem to recall.

As much as I like Chiyoshouma, I'm expecting him to spend a lot of time getting manhandled this basho. Good luck to him, he's going to need it. In any event, Tamawashi looking fast, strong and confident.

Worried about Kisenosato. He probably should have sat this one out. We'll see how it goes.

Endo not looking bad against Terunofuji. It's too early to say, but this could potentially be an important basho for him. Might we see him in the sanyaku come July? Perhaps, perhaps.

Hakuho looked sloppy there IMHO. Eh.

Ishiura and Ura both seem in good shape. Looking forward to see what they'll do.

I'll be cheering hard for Takayasu and Mitakeumi! I don't think Takayasu's going to get a zensho, but I do think he'll get the ten wins he needs. Which would be awesome.

11 wins I think would cement it. Going 12, 11, then 10 I think might not show off as impressive compared to if he were to at least finish with 11.

Kisenosato has never gone kyūjō in his career. I have a feeling he won’t start now. His chance was before the tournament, if he’s in, I expect him to finish.

Hakuhō looked strong despite his shaky ending, looking forward to what he can do this tournament. I want him to win another finally.

Kise's Yokozuna now. Different dynamic. If he loses 4 before day 8 he'll drop out for sure. Day 2 will be a strong tell. Kise losing 2 straight to guys he usually handles easily will not be good.

not so sure about harumafuji, to me it looked like he had some pain after the bout!

my bold prediction for this basho: takayasu goes yusho!

Aminishiki's gonna let his guard down and go 3-12 or 2-13

Day 1 Thoughts

  • Takayasu looked tremendous. Strong and calculated Daieisho's each move for an impressive slap down.
  • Hakuho looked strong but reckless. After going kyujo in March and going a year with no Yusho, I wonder if he wanted to start the basho off sending a dominant message to the others. It nearly cost him the match, but 1-0 and it looks like he might be the healthiest he's been for a while.
  • Mitakeumi! Great start with his 2nd career victory over Kak.
  • Terunofuji didn't look bad in his loss to Endo. I think he can still be a force in this basho.
  • Stating the obvious, but Kise didn't look good. After the initial tachiai, he went nearly full vertical and couldn't get any leverage on his arm throw attempt. Rough start.

Looking Forward to Day 2...

  • Kise faces off against Okinoumi, whom he has a 17-3 record against. Will he make the necessary adjustments to his sumo for day 2 to overcome the injury still clearly hampering him? You would think a loss would put him on the brink of kyujo.
  • Harumafuji vs Endo should be a good one, as both looked stellar on day 1. Endo has never won in their 6 matchups.
  • Goeido vs. Takayasu has me intrigued. Goeido looked good, but this will be a true test on how well he's recovered.
  • Shodai vs. Ikioi should be fun with Ikioi looking healthier.
  • And in lower ranks, Wakaichiro makes his debut at Jonidan tomorrow.

An exciting start to the May basho, with no lack of big storylines! Hoping for a great tournament and good health to all the rikishi.

Haven’t there been yokozuna who’ve kept fighting despite a really poor start? I feel like Harumafuji did that somewhat recently…

Kisenosato will do whatever is expected of him to maintain his Hinkaku as the new Japanese Yokozuna. If that means dropping out early he will

Agreed!   It was day 1 and the plot(s) thicken with surprising losses, and young guns doing well.

Mitakeumi looked great in winning.

Ura looked like he gained a few more pounds.  With the added weight, he doesn't need to backpedal and win by crazy moves.  Good old yoshidashi will do.

The two best riskishi in the last basho started out with a loss.  Teruno looked better of the two, IMO.  Will see today if they are good to go or still have lingering injuries.

Teronofuji relies too much on brute strength to the point that he is really vulnerable as soon as he is injured. He gives up the Morozashi way too often to be able to get away with it against top contenders if he is carrying any form of injury.

It doesn't look good for all the veterans this basho:

Shotenro lost deep down in Makushita

Toyonoshima lost his first match a bit further up in Makushita

Aminishiki lost again today in Juryo

Kotoshogiku also lost both of his matches at Sekiwake, giving away a douboshi today.

How many intai will be called before or after this basho...?

I hope and I expect to see Kakuryu retiring soon. Barring his Yusho in Kyusho'16 his performance is unworthy since a couple of Basho.

It was sad to watch Kotoshogiku lose again.

Terunofuji?   He seemed to love going in and out of kadoban.   At 0-2, he has one foot in kadoban already.

You know who looks like an yusho winner?   Takayasu.   He looks like he will win more than 11 bouts this basho and Ozeki ranking.

Ura was back to winning one his way today, running around like crazy before beating his opponent.

10 wins are enough for new Ozeki Takayasu, right? It's a bit downward trend but 33 wins surely will be sufficient? Has there been a word on this?

I read Mitakeumi was injured during the jungyo, but he looks unaffected at this point.  Tochiozan has me believing he has recovered from whatever has been ailing him.  Yes, I know he went 10-5 last basho, but he also dropped his last 4 bouts, which left some questions.  Tochinoshin has his first 2-0 start in more than 2 years.  Ikioi is bouncing back from being thrown around in the joi.  He reminds me of Kyokutenho in that he fares well when ranked below the joi, but cannot compete against the sanyaku.  In Juryo I bet against Yamaguchi going KK, but he is out to prove me wrong. (Signofapproval...)  In Ms I think we are seeing the end of Toyonoshima -- too bad.(Goingkyujo...)(Danpatsu-shiki...)

Ganbatte, Takayasu!   (Iamnotworthy...)

A duoboshi? Is that even a thing?

not as good as a kin-boshi or gin-boshi of course, but still something for a first time makuuchi joi rikishi.

After scoring his first ever dou-boshi today, Chiyoshoma can aim at his first ever kin-boshi tomorroa against the GOAT - and that would be quite a thing!
