Kuroyama 715 Posted May 23, 2017 I may have been inattentive or something, but can someone explain the Takagenji hype? The crowd goes nuts for him, but I have no idea why.

rhyen 1,842 Posted May 23, 2017 (edited) Okay, that was crazy. Terutsuyoshi lifted Rikishin from the center of the dohyo to the outside. Edit: and Satoyama can join Aminishiki in the "no overhead camera" club. Edited May 23, 2017 by rhyen
MumboJumbo 37 Posted May 23, 2017 I thought Yutakayama pulled a headlock throw on Ishiura there at first. Ouch.

Ishiura was the one initiating the backing off motion in order to throw Yutakayama off the dohyo but to his credit Yutakayama kept his left arm firmly locking onto Ishiura's head and used the momentum to instead launch Ishiura spectacularly out of the dohyo. Both submarine rikishis' bouts were great today. I love how Ura took the initiative all the way with Kaisei, first by pulling him and when it didn't work he instantly switched to pushing when Kaisei was still reorienting himself, even adding the cheeky but crucial knee trip at the end (reminded me of the pranks I used to pullon my classmates) that finally sent Kaisei toppling down. Great stuff!

The only intra-sanyaku match I can see getting scrapped this basho is Mitakeumi-Kotoshogiku. You are correct, sir. I missed the same heya exemption for Harumafuji vs Terunofuji. And Mitakeumi - Shodai would make a good substitute. Edited May 23, 2017 by Ack!

It was called as a kotenage, but he definitely initiated the throw using that headlock. Ishiura's arm was caught up in there as well and I remember seeing more of a grip on the arm throughout the throw. Will have to check tomorrow. A glorious throw nonetheless. Adil 232 Posted May 23, 2017 Kisenosato is so injured that the only thing he is capable of is to stand up straight and walk backwards and out and he still keeps competing? I guess he is under pressure to appear on the dohyo because of his popularity. There was a time when Kotoshogiku was capable of it, but I refuse to believe he could beat Kisenosato like that with his gaburi-yori in his current condition. We have seen the 'power' of his hop-hop gaburis against Yoshikaze and Goeido this basho. There is a reason why he is already on 7 losses. I also wonder why Kotoshogiku felt the need to give that extra push in the end when Kisenosato was clearly out. It was definitely not part of any momentum or anything. Maybe it was out of anger at being on the verge of demotion from sanyaku altogether while his long time ozeki companion is at such dizzying heights.
Dwale 419 Posted May 23, 2017 (edited) Not sure whether Hakuho/Takayasu or Kaisei/Ura was my favorite match of the day. Both of those were really tasty. Excellent strategy from Hakuho. Special mention for Ishiura being the most aerodynamic rikishi in makuuchi, but also, he dang near pulled off a win after pulling that Atlas impression. Oh! Forgot to mention Sokokurai v. Shodai. Amazing reversal, there. When I saw his weight start to shift I was sure it was game over. My jaw dropped. Morty 1,495 Posted May 23, 2017 Shodai was really impressive in that win today. He was in a negative position the whole time and yet kept resisting until he had a position where he could win it.

Wakaebala 151 Posted May 23, 2017 This basho we can see some great achievments from Ura, Shodai, Takayasu, Hokutofuji and Tochinosin. I like them all, and rooting for them to rise on the Banzuke as high as they can. But seriously, how about Ura? Now I feel he has the same confidence-level as he had in the lower divisions. If he survives the tachiai, he tends to pull some dirty trick out of his hat. Enjoying him a lot. I'm curious: How long for the other rikishi to anticipate his fighting style... So it's Kisenosato-Harumafuji on day 15 and Kisenosato-Hakuho on day 14. Deviations are rare. Kisenosato can do us a favour and go kyujo before day 12 (when day 13 bouts are set).

If Kise loses to Tamawashi tonight I think we may see that and I think that may be more likely than not. Tamawashi is due for a win against him anyway. Amamaniac 2,079 Posted May 23, 2017 Bout 5 was a real doozy! Daishomaru got caught twice for a false start. Chief judge Toshima being sticky about the wrestler not dropping his fingertips all the way to the ring. Each time, Tochinoshin went nonstop to finish the bout and tossed Daishomaru around with wild abandon. By the third try, a fed up Tochinoshin lay down a vicious beat down on Daishomaru which almost knocked his lights out. The great thing was that the Georgian showed up for his KK interview in his yukata and was relaxed and humourous, impressing the Japanese commentators. Adil 232 Posted May 23, 2017 Could someone who can read Japanese be kind enough to tell me what these two graphics are saying? They were shown during today's broadcast. The only thing I can understand in the second one is that it mentions Soukukarai, with two columns underneath for left and right listing 20 and 10. The first one gives Terunofuji's shikona and is saying something about 13.5 and 6.5 seconds (bout lengths?). Thanks in advance. Amamaniac 2,079 Posted May 23, 2017 It was good to see Harumafuji back in the ring and as strong as ever, despite injuring himself the day before. He has been surgical in his victories this tournament, only falling once. Hakuho, on the other hand, has had more falls in his outings but at least today his right arm seemed to be a little more mobile. It should be a good and potentially critical showdown between Hakuho and Harumafuji on Day 13.
I am the Yokozuna 193 Posted May 23, 2017 Second one - average time from the last basho that it took Terunofuji to win a bout - 13.5 seconds and 6.5 to lose one and his average bout time stood at 8.5 First one - which leg Sokokurai dashes with to his opponents - left 20 times, right 10 times
