Sakura 1,489 Posted May 14, 2017 So Juryo has started and Takagenji has a win, but all I've got on the stream is baseball.
kuroimori 1,634 Posted May 14, 2017 Kyokushuho couldn't wait to start his basho - he tried a jikan-mae tachi-ai but his opponent, Chiyomaru wasn't interested, so the gyoji called it a matta and schooled both guys by showing Kyokushuho the corner of the dohyo, where he was supposed to do one last round of preparation. Anyone remembers a jikan-mae in Juryo?
kuroimori 1,634 Posted May 14, 2017 Mitoryu, aka Turbold (I shall call him "Miturbo") started with a loss at the hands of Akua.
WAKATAKE 2,656 Posted May 14, 2017 With four yokozuna doing dohyo-iris today, you could tell who got the most love from the crowd. This is going to be a very interesting basho indeed.

Thanks for the invite, but the moving chat screen somewhat bothers me - I try (without too much success though) to reduce my second-screen activity during the live broadcast... Rocks 1,809 Posted May 14, 2017 Surprised to see Osunaarashi lose on 1st day. Doesn't bode well for the basho I think.
WAKATAKE 2,656 Posted May 14, 2017 Just now, Rocks said: Surprised to see Osunaarashi lose on 1st day. Doesn't bode well for the basho I think. He started bouncing on his good leg again after they both jumped off the dohyo. Every time I see that happen it's never good news for him.
dada78641 884 Posted May 14, 2017 (edited) Very nice victory for Yutakayama, new makuuchi entrant. Love how Chiyotairyu smashed Miyogiryu right off the dohyo just now. Really glad I get to watch this live on TV as opposed to some awkward stream... edit: pictured above, the pinkest dohyo-iri ever. Kotoyuki's new mawashi, although it didn't help him: Edited May 14, 2017 by dada78641
dada78641 884 Posted May 14, 2017 Really glad Ishiura got his first scalp (Tokushoryu), although a bit predictable with the low tachi-ai. Hope he can make the same game work against others unlike last basho.
WAKATAKE 2,656 Posted May 14, 2017 Ura plays smart and doesn't let Arawashi in on the mawashi. Another victory for a young hope.
WAKATAKE 2,656 Posted May 14, 2017 Sokokurai looked like he didn't want anything to do with Ichinojo, and it paid off.
dada78641 884 Posted May 14, 2017 (edited) First henka of the tournament, Sokokurai using it against Ichinojo. Or at least, I think it was, it didn't seem like they made initial contact. Basically, he moved to the side and grabbed Ichinojo's head to redirect his initial step. Semi-henka at least. Edited May 14, 2017 by dada78641
gijo 27 Posted May 14, 2017 First slap fest of the basho: Shohozan vs Takakeisho. Great ending..

dada78641 884 Posted May 14, 2017 Takayasu starting now... rooting for him. Wonder if Baruto is in the audience. I know for a fact he was sighted in Kinshicho (next to Ryogoku) earlier this week...
dada78641 884 Posted May 14, 2017 Excellent hikiotoshi by Takayasu!
WAKATAKE 2,656 Posted May 14, 2017 Tamawashi looked very intimidating in his win.
dada78641 884 Posted May 14, 2017 Aw, Terunofuji loses! Nicely reversed Endo's strong initial attack but he couldn't get Endo off his balance to finish him off.
dada78641 884 Posted May 14, 2017 Despite looking dangerous for a moment right at the edge, that was truly super powerful sumo by Hakuho against Chiyonokuni. Smashed right into him and immediately got a powerful grip.
dada78641 884 Posted May 14, 2017 The first yokozuna scalp. Kakuryuu was pushing strong, but Mitakeumi showed adaptive sumo and regained the initiative.
dada78641 884 Posted May 14, 2017 Now we'll see what shape Kisenosato is in...
dada78641 884 Posted May 14, 2017 Yoshikaze pushes against Kisenosato's left side and didn't get pushed back hard enough. Kisenosato is extremely strong, but he's only really competing with one half of his body. Near the edge he tried to turn Yoshikaze around to push with his right, but it was too late. Yoshikaze:「誰に勝っても最高ですけれども」indeed!
rhyen 1,837 Posted May 14, 2017 It is just Day 1, but I bet there will be at least 200 pics on Kisenosato alone.
