Link goes to Asasekiryu's retirement thread. Akiseyama has retired also?

Akiseyama is neither kyujo nor intai, as far as I know. (Idunno...)

Kotoseigo can't catch a break, he suffered a right knee injury in February and then re-injured it in the Haru basho. He has since had surgery, I think with a second op still planned. In the past he suffered left knee injuries and had three surgeries to fix that.

Teraoumi suffered a foot or leg injury during keiko last month and had surgery, spending two weeks in hospital for that.

Rikiyushi retired between basho for personal reasons (danpatsu-shiki picture in the box below). For the immediate future he will live with his sister and work in his cousin's restaurant in Okayama, hometown of his father.

Hokuyozakura also retired for personal reasons.

Spoiler

Minezaki-oyakata (former Maegashira Misugiiso) makes the final cut at Rikiyushi's danpatsu-shiki, with the assistance of heya gyoji Kimura Ginjiro (holding the hair) and Kimura Kazuma (holding the tray).

So i guess the reason that Asasekiryu is not on the kyujo list while other rikishi who have officially retired are is that the former Sekiwake is now a member of the Kyokai and is no longer a rikishi, much as it was a couple years ago when someone became a Sewanin just before a basho and I still picked him for Sandanme Game because he wasn't on the kyujo list.  At least it doesn't make much of a difference for my calculations of the likely strength of schedule in Makushita because I had him almost dead average for the rank he was at.

The JSK website has Ms14w Asasekiryu listed as retired. Therefore, he is not kyujo.

His retirement also opens up a foreigner spot for Takasago beya.

Former sekitori always get an immediate official announcement of their intai, regardless of their subsequent Kyokai status.

I'm not surprised.

Took the words right out of my keyboard. M2e Okinoumi (0-4) gets the freebie.

Good that he's not repeating the mistake he made in January by struggling on to Day 10.

I'm not so sure about that. I know the NSK does not like Yokozunae losing in the first week, giving out kinboshi and struggling to get 8 wins. IMHO, there is nothing wrong with this. As a matter of fact, what is so wrong with it?

A yokozuna who is clearly not performing to expectations should respect the dignity of the rank, withdraw as soon as possible and come back stronger next time.

Yes, I know that is the expectation. My somewhat rhetorical question is, "What's wrong with a Yokozuna struggling?"
