Retirees after Haru 2017

Recommended Posts

Just eight retirements this basho.

Ryuonami (Tatsunami)
Tokinowaka (Minato)
Hamaazuma (Tamanoi)
Takenoumi (Yamahibiki)
Hokutoryu (Yamahibiki)
Himekatsuyama (Musashigawa)
Yusei (Onomatsu, maezumo)
Komaminato (Minato, maezumo)

Ryuonami was going to drop to sandanme for the first time in six years, so he might have seen the writing on the wall (or his shisho did). He was a classmate of Azumaryu at Kyushu Joho University, who was the more highly regarded prospect at the time (and so was a third Mongolian, who didn't turn pro), and their careers have borne this out; Ryuonami never got particularly close to juryo.

Tatsunami-beya has a foreigner slot available now.

Second-oldest active rikishi Hokutoryu's retirement was already noted by Yubinhaad a few days ago. Hamaazuma was a short-time persister (5 MK career start) who turned out as well as one can usually hope from those guys, reaching sandanme briefly on three separate occasions. And it's been a while since we had retirements straight out of maezumo by rikishi who actually participated in it (most who do are registered but never actually step on the dohyo) - the most recent one was Ginga, some people may still remember that (and if you don't, video's available).

Ryuonami told me in January that he wants to retire after Osaka. Unfortunately he was never close to Juryo.

He will live in Yokohama from April on.

no one THAT notable this basho.

also a intai question: if a more notable sekitori retires, is it announced in this thread, or is it it's one thread, or both?

Nearly always announced as part of this thread. Most common exception might be someone retiring during the basho, in which case someone might create a special thread, or just mention it in the regular basho discussion. Those cases are usually listed here too. As with anything where people are involved, It does happen differently sometimes.

A few pictures from Hokutoryu's danpatsu-shiki which was held on senshuraku. He and Yamahibiki-oyakata (former Maegashira Ganyu) made their ozumo debut together in March 1986, and evidently it was quite an emotional moment when the time came for the shisho to make the final cut.

And now to Ryuonami, a post-final-bout hanamichi shot and then danpatsu-shiki.

Yusei also participated in his shussehiro, and I'm struggling to recall any other post-maezumo retirees who did that. Makes his intai even more odd.

One other note, Tokinowaka retired after a 17-year career and had his danpatsu-shiki at some point between Hatsu and Haru. He has returned to his hometown to study and will eventually take over the family business.
