PawnSums 59 Posted March 26, 2017 (edited) We'll never truly know, but he probably would have gone about 5-5 Against Asashoryu 3-7 Against Hakuho Also are you Rufakiyama? Edited March 26, 2017 by PawnSums

Randomitsuki 2,768 Posted March 26, 2017 In my historical Elo strength ratings, Akebono peaked at 2377, Asashoryu at 2558, and Hakuho at 2679 points. If they had met in their prime, Akebono would have won 26% against Asashoryu and 15% against Hakuho.

rzombie1988 157 Posted March 27, 2017 He beat prime Takanohana and his various stablemates and prime Musashimaru regularly. I think he would have done quite well.

YoungSumo 93 Posted March 27, 2017 Questions like these are difficult but in most sports newer generations are better than previous generations. There's more knowledge about technique, training, diets, healthcare etc. That's why olympic and world records keep getting broken.
Jejima 1,313 Posted March 27, 2017 Having watched all three.... Akebono would have lost most of the time to Hakuho, and more often than not to Asashoryu. But that is just my opinion. (Might be worth noting that *usually* people think that the performers in the past are better than the new crop. Not for me in this case.)

Chanko Thief 67 Posted May 22, 2020 Do you suppose the height and weight would be a problem for them (Asa especially)?
Churaumi 728 Posted May 22, 2020 I don't think it would have mattered much. They have the three sumo "ideal" traits (heart, body, and mind) in such quantities they would probably still beat Akebono if they all met in their primes. Akebono's size could be mitigated through technique.

Katooshu 3,132 Posted May 22, 2020 (edited) 3-7ish 'feels' about right to me in a series of 10 matches. I don't think anyone would blank Akebono at his best, but these two have enough technique and strength to exploit long tall 'Bono's weaknesses more often than not. I also think that, while Hak is undoubtedly the most accomplished rikishi ever, prime Asa was very close in quality to prime Hak. Asa was 4-5 against Musashimaru who was almost as tall as Akebono and more or less as heavy. Of course, he also fought the likes of Baruto regularly. Their H2H record? 9-0 to Asashoryu. Fair enough, but Akebono is 4” taller than Musashimaru, and back when I used to box, 4 additional inches in height was never a fun thing to deal with (different sport of course). And yes you could use Baruto as a measuring stick to see how well Asa does against tall opponents but I am of the mind that Akebono was much more superior to Baruto in the skills department and would present some problems. Perhaps, but the question was just about how Asashoryu would cope with his size, not his skills, so I gave an example of a large rikishi that Asa had no trouble handling to show size wasn’t a concern for him (though I purposely chose an Ozeki because he also had skills). I did some (weight class-less) MMA in my younger years, and I had the opposite feeling. Short guys could get better leverage and really crank down chokes and things. It felt so satisfying to get inside under a giant and choke him out. Usually they'd wait too long to tap and they'd wake up being unable to remember their mother's name.
