fwuzzle23 66 Posted March 26, 2017 What a basho. I was severely underestimating Kisenosato's chances to force the playoff, let alone win the yusho, but goddamn it was a welcome surprise to see him tough it out and pull off two wins. Legendary performance from him and I hope it silences the people who think Kisenosato didn't deserve promotion. Though I suspect he may have gotten a little help from karma slapping Terunofuji so hard his soul flew out.
Benihana 1,901 Posted March 26, 2017 (edited) Ok, this was really i have no words for it. First a quick start by Terunofuji and Kisenosato trying to sidestep veeery late - matta...or mattenka...henkatta? Not as early as vs. Kotoshogiku, but...whatever, redo. Now a real sidestep and a proper one by Kise, ferociously defending to avoid Terunofuji getting a grip and he manages to pull him down! A playoff and 51 more kensho for Kisenosato. A small miracle. Playoff: And AGAIN a quick start by Terunofuji, this time very early, similar to the Kotoshogiku bout, matta. Straight on tachiai by both, Terunofuji overpowering backpedaling Kisenosato, but with an kotenage out of nowhere he floors Terunofuji a second time for the yusho. Dwale 419 Posted March 26, 2017 I'm too stunned...he...and then... lol. Well, as folks like to say, "Anything can happen in sumo." Apparently! I've never been more delighted to be proven wrong. All the congratulations in the world to Kisenosato. WOW. What a warrior.

Anything can happen yes, miraculous recovery not. Watch how Kise received the Cup, he didn't grasp the Cup's neck, rather cradled it with the crook of his left arm. WAKATAKE 2,631 Posted March 26, 2017 Kisenosato, who was crying during the playing of Kimigayo, said in the interview that he was able to move thanks to an unseen power. He also expressed his gratitude for the support for this basho, and pledged to concentrate on healing his injury to get ready for next basho. http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1798156.html http://www.sponichi.co.jp/sports/news/2017/03/26/kiji/20170326s00005000292000c.html His junior heyamate Takayasu was in the shitaku after he finished his match, watching the yokozuna on the TV, and could not keep the tears from flowing when Kise won. http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1798207.html Hakkaku oyakata was ecstatic about Kise's comeback victory, praising it as one that will be talked about for years to come. Tomozuna oyakata, who served his last basho as chief judge due to retiring in June, noted that being able to see the kind of sumo that occurred today made him proud to have done ringside judging. Nishonoseki oyakata was very moved by the victory, and stated "Everyone was crying." Nishonoseki was confident in his recommendation of yokozuna promotion for Kise after his yusho in January, also saying, "This should convince people now." http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1798204.html

Arn 24 Posted March 26, 2017 Wow, what a comeback from Kisenosato! And what a strange ending to this basho! This is exactly the stuff the japanese love, what ever happens in the rest of his career he will always have this triumph to fall back on. That was karma for Terunofuji. In a way maybe its good for him, I think a lot of people will have any easier time forgetting that terrible henka against Kotoshogiku now. Speaking of Kotoshogiku, he ended up with nine wins instead of ten, tough. That twelvt win for Takayasu migth be very important next basho.
YoungSumo 93 Posted March 26, 2017 That was amazing. In my year or so of watching sumo this day has to be the best one so far. Very deserved Yusho for Kisenosato. Though I have to commend Terunofuji as well, next to performing great this basho he's also just such a natural villain. Having only very honorable and dignified guys would be boring, I'm hoping Teru can keep this form going forward.
Morty 1,480 Posted March 26, 2017 That was an awesome end to the basho and one I was totally not expecting. Nor was Kisenosato from the look on his face. Towards the end of the first bout there was a point where Kisenosato stopped using his left arm altogether as Terunofuji started pushing him backwards, and yet he somehow managed to get the win. Really good strategy from the Yokozuna in that he worked really hard to stop the Ozeki getting his hands on his mawashi, because it meant Terunofuji couldn't monster him in the way he has done everyone else. Then in the second bout, sacrificing his bad shoulder and landing on it in order to get the win. Brilliant sumo, and there is almost no way that Kisenosato will be fighting in May - he'll sit that one out to get healthy for July.
Morty 1,480 Posted March 26, 2017 And if that was the last we have seen of Kotoshogiku, then he went out in his signature style with a bumpety win against Yoshikaze. If that was his final match, then I wish him well, he has been one of my absolute favourites.
Arn 24 Posted March 26, 2017 (edited) Also a nice win for Kakuryu. An equal 10-5 compared to Harumafuji instead of two behind, while also beating both of the other Yokozunas. Add Hakuhos absence and he is not so obviously yokozuna #4, the spot to avoid. Edit: ups, mixed up the records (changed this now). RabidJohn 1,663 Posted March 26, 2017 Wow, that was unexpected! And all the more brilliant for it. Turned out to be a fairytale after all. No one can argue with Kise's promotion now. I'm not a Terunofuji hater. Another yusho has just slipped through his fingers, which may be karma, but it can't be easy to take. I hope he stays fit and continues his march towards promotion. Go Takayasu! Another shukun-sho and a proper ozeki run in May. I'm really pleased for Mitakeumi with a 9-6 at komusubi. Shodai completely failed to pull off his weird shadowing of Mita this time. Congratulations also to Takakeisho with another kanto-sho for the short guys, and to Ura for his KK - just! What an ace basho!

Jyuunomori 226 Posted March 26, 2017 (edited) Not only did Terunofuji leave his soul and integrity as a rikishi into the ring, he also left the Yusho there as well. Karma is such a beautiful and fabulous thing. I somehow prognosticated Kise's win. It was beautiful, I only wish the first win was a cleaner henka so Terunofuji could have felt it more.
