Day 1 absences from the remaining divisions should be announced in 24 hours or so. As is usual with this thread, let's please try to keep it on topic. That's how it generally works, and makes it easier to find info about who is in and who is out (at this time it appears that Day 1 non-sekitori absence info will be about 20 messages down-thread due to joking around). Links to other threads where info about injuries or whatever led to someone withdrawing are usually provided. Kintamayama 40,632 Posted March 10, 2017 Brazilian Kaisei is kyujo for the first time in his career. He injured his knee during training with Hakuhou on March 6th. Right knee meniscus. "It's not as bad as we initially thought so he may enter later.." explained his Oyakata.

Kaisei had the current longest streak at 435. The current longest streak now belongs to Moti's own, Ikioi at 390 after Hatsu 2017.

Kintamayama 40,632 Posted March 10, 2017 OK, so Kaisei won't be back any time soon. ACL tear and meniscus injury, three months to heal.

Somewhat ironic that after Tomozuna said, "It's not as bad as we initially thought" it turned out to be worse than they initially thought. I was somewhat alarmed at his idea that Kaisei could enter the tournament later and possibly aggravate things - at least that's not going to happen now. True, but two missed tournaments would put him in Makushita.

Two missed tournaments would also allow Kaisei to fully recover and rehab his knee. Something most sumotori rarely do. Terunofuji comes to mind.

Fukurou 534 Posted March 11, 2017 (edited) Does anyone know what is up with Maeta? He was one of the guys knocked out on the dohyo last basho, and immediately withdrew. I am assuming this absence is still related to that, but I don't think anyone heard (or at least didn't report back to this forum) what his injury was. Tsuchinoninjin 989 Posted March 11, 2017 On the Japanese wikipedia page for Maeta it says he received a bone fracture in his face area, but the reference is in an offline sports magazine so I can't confirm past that.
