PawnSums 59 Posted March 3, 2017 I know what I said, I would put all the questions in my questions thread, but this just seems like too big of a question to ask there. I know that before 1969 it was 3 make-koshi for demotion, and after 1969 it was the usual 2, but I also read that it was changed many times before the official rules were set in 1969. is there anybody on this here sumoforum that knows how it worked before that? I've been wondering for weeks on end.
Asashosakari 18,786 Posted March 3, 2017 As far as I know the demotion criteria were meant to be standardized to 2 makekoshi when the modern Kyokai was formed in 1927, though in practice it was more complicated than that for the first few years because of the weird way they were doing the banzuke. It was replaced by the 3-MK rule when the schedule was expanded to six tournaments per year in 1958, then back to 2 MK in 1969 as you mentioned. Prior to 1927 it's all a big mess that defies any systematic explanation.
