Toyonoshima rebirth

I didn't see and thread about this. After his injury, he is just about to get back to Juro. He has spent so much time on getting that body, it's worth the climb back up at 32 .  Toyonoshima deserves his own thread.

I'm pretty sure there's a 'Toyonoshima injured' thread buried somewhere.

I really like Toyonoshima, who categorically disproved the notion that short guys don't do well in makuuchi, but that achilles tendon rupture he suffered is a major setback and he'll be 34 in June, which is getting on a bit even for a healthy top-flight rikishi. Yes, he'll probably regain his sekitori status, but I'm not sure about him getting back to anything like his former glory, maybe not even back into makuuchi.

As usual I err on the less-optimistic side with regard to Toyo's prospects, and as usual I'll be happy for him to prove me wrong, If not, nobody can take away the fact that he took the 1st kinboshi from Hakuho nor that he managed a 14-1D as a maegashira. He's had an excellent career.

How about this one...

One could argue it was even less of a "Yusho equivalent" considering he was ranked at M9 for that basho (coming off a forced absence, iirc), and fought a fairly easy schedule for a former Sekiwake that should not have been ranked that low in normal circumstances. Were it not for Hakuho (whom he did not fight normally) also putting up 14 and winning the playoff...

Not surprised but still somehow disappointed he didn't make the cut this time. Here's hoping for the makushita yusho.

Worse for him is that because of Kasei being out he likely to get a Juryo opponent too. Unless someone else goes kyujo which seems likely.

That'll be Fine, Toyonoshima can beat a Juryo.

His 1st match was Sunday, and his opponent was Ms1 Takagenji, who won by default (Toyonoshima did not appear). He has not withdrawn from the tournament officially. His next scheduled match will be on day 3 or day 4, unless he withdraws before then.

He has withdrawn :-( This is obviously a big blow to his hopes of ever getting back to juryo as he will fall a long way down makushita now.

From my POV it is the best what could have been done. Trade some ranks for health or call it quits. If he heals completely, he has very a good chance making it back to paid ranks.

I wish more guys did that, but it's more about the training between bashos and that wear and tear that is worrisome.

The problem is that the trade-off is pretty much the worst when a rikishi is ranked in high makushita. Further down in the lower divisions: one 0-0-7 demotion = one 6-1 promotion, roughly, so it's not that hard to go back up. On the other hand, going fully absent from Toyonoshima's current position would probably mean at least six months to get back (Ms2 0-0-7 -> Ms42 6-1 -> Ms18 6-1 -> Ms6 6-1 -> Ms2), unless he gets a zensho along the way.

Sure, you are absolutely correct, but what should he do? He just can't fight in his condition. One wrong move could mean instant intai. I don't want to change position with him. Horrible.

Ms2e Toyonoshima (0-1-1) is back in action on day 5. He faces J13w Fujiazuma (0-4).

Who would have guessed that he will be back in Juryo that fast? ;-)

I just hope he is really ready to rumble, as it looks like he has to win all his remaining 5 bouts at his current Ms2 rank to have a chance of clinching a promotion for Juryo as both Ms1 guys have already bagged in 2 wins.

For those who want to follow Toyonoshima's rehab in Kumamoto(?), here is his blog.

In other news, fellow veteran Takekaze just got discharged from hospital after undergoing a second operation on his right elbow(?)
