Preparations of the Y/O - Haru 2017

Recommended Posts

The wooden block on the keiko-ba wall now says "Yokozuna Kisenosato". .Yokozuna Kisenosato has started training. Shiko, suriashi etc. for one hour. "I've been able to rest so my body is pretty much in shape.I will be diligently building up my body.." he explained. He is very busy with all the public functions after his promotion, but he seems to be handling it well. "I don't feel any difference. It's the same.." he said. About 40 press people were present at the keiko. "It's not like I'm going to do anything special.. I will do what I have to do.." he summed.

Regarding ex-Tokitenkuu's passing way: "We went to the training  institute together. He taught me how to use taping. I am very sad."

He looks good, but slightly heavier. May help him. I don't think it will hurt as speed isn't his thing anyway.

Kisenosato trained at home today against Takayasu. 9-2.  He won the one day tournament on Sunday. "My body was quite ready during the tournament. I think I managed to do my own style.." he said. Kisenosato is an avid NFL fan and watched the Superbowl , seeing the Patriots come from behind and win. He was especially in awe of their 39 year old quarterback Brady,he himself being the 7th oldest rikishi to be promoted to Yokozuna at the age of 30 and a half. "Science, nutrition and training systems have come a long way .If your body is strong and you have a lot of experience, there is nothing you can't accomplish!" he declared.

I'm positively impressed now. Almost a Kise fan.

I have to admit I didn't always like Kise. Years ago he used to play these silly games at the tachi-ai, trying to throw his aite off-balance by not cooperating for the start of the bout as he should. There were, very regularly, a lot of mattas in those days. But he solidified his game over the years, and stopped relying on silly nonsense, and just did good sumo. By now I've liked him for some time, and I'm very happy he made it to the top. He's not spectacular, he's not flashy, he has no shtick. Just good, solid sumo.

A renewed Hakuho restarted training on the 2nd - but what is new?

20170203-OHT1I50027-L.jpg

Spoiler

after 7 basho a new keiko mawashi

He had only one day of rest after the basho - and there is not much time to train: Hakuho-cup, setsubun activities - a bit of sumo at the Fuji tournament - and now he's in Hong-Kong from the 6th to the 8th for the opening of the 2nd chanko restaurant that he produces -  and then the heya travels to Hawaii from the 11th to the 17th.

Does he usually wrap his feet that much for keiko, or is that unusual?

Yokozuna Kisenosato went local and visited his home town in Ibaraki to make preparations for the parade and festivities slated for February 18th. He then returned to Tokyo without stopping at his parents' house. "I can't calm down. I need to stick to my daily routine.." he explained. He did some shiko and exercises and admitted his hip is a bit "tight". Still, there was sweat. And this rare photo which should be saved by the universe.

Today, fierce training  at home with Takayasu. 13-6. Keeps getting a lot of presents and attends many functions. He got a 10 kilo sirloin as part of the "Fukushima Prefecture Governor Prize"  and loads of other stuff. "Fukushima is our (Ibaraki's) neighbor so I'm deeply honored. I will attempt to add more strength and gambarize so that I can yusho again!!" he declared.

Kisenosato trained with Takayasu yet again yesterday. 10-5. He even looked pleased when he lost by yorikiri at some point. "I'm able to do great keiko. The young guys are really delivering.." he said. On Valentine's Day yesterday he was the most popular guy at the heya, getting a lot of chocolate which he doesn't usually eat. "If I'm thinking about my body, maybe it's better for me to eat some.." he said.

Kisenosato: 6-11 against Takayasu today.

I am sure that Akinomaki will be posting the relevant articles everyday.

March 1 was 15 wins and 12 loses, still not so good, or Takayasu has improved?

I always think the figures from heya-mate training bouts are very misleading. For all we know, Kise was trying to work on a weakness in his technique...

Yokozuna Hakuhou's usual training partner Juryo Yamaguchi suffers from back pains, so he trained against total newcomer and his new prodigy 22 year old Nakamura, starting his preparations for Haru 2017. "His body was 'softer ' than I expected. I thought it would be more rigid, but it wasn't. It's regrettable that I didn't see that.." he said. "He has great offensive timing ", he added, praising the World Amateur Championship's lightweight division (under 85 kilos) two times yusho winner.

Ozeki Goueidou is recovering from that right foot ligament injury and entered the dohyo for the first time today since the injury. He did not do any matches, just checked out his tachiai and did some butsugari. The Osaka basho is his hometown basho. "I will be entering," he affirmed. He still isn't fully recovered and was seen climbing stairs very carefully. He intends to do real sumo by the weekend.

Yokozuna Kisenosato did a bit better at home against Takayasu today (15-12, after that 6-11 yesterday..). "I feel it's still a long way to go.. I have a lot of things to improve," he admitted. He was not happy with the quality of his sumo. "I've got to praise Takayasu. He is really improving.." he added. The next couple of days, he will be participating in the Nishonoseki rengo-keiko. "I will take care and do my best to do keiko in good condition. I want to concentrate and do it.." he said.

Isn't it harmful when you train with weaker or less skilled guys?  Skills might degrade with lower level training partners?

If you're in Hak's position, you're expected to take an active role in training the juniors, even if that does have a negative effect on you personally (just like a lot of things yokozuna etc. are expected to do). With that said, I doubt doing this for one day is going to seriously degrade anything.

Kisenosato gradually back in the groove. He was 13-0 against Yoshikaze at the Nishonoseki Ichimon rengo-keiko held at Shibatayama beya today. "My condition is getting much better. I think I'm good.." he said. He likes to train a lot with Yoshikaze so nothing new there. "He's a quick and wily one and is really genki.." he added. Nishonoseki Oyakata was pleased with the turnout and Kisenosato. "He looked good, but the fact that he faced only one opponent.. I'd like him to face more opponents and have at least 20 bouts.." he said later.
