As most of us know, the very first basho of a new yokozuna is hard. In the six basho era there were only two yokozuna who could win their debut tournament. And so the question rises how many wins will Kisenosato achieve at the haru basho in march?!

I am going with 11, assuming that everyone in the upper Makuuchi is more healthy than hobbled.

11 would also mean to have failed in what I expected to be the "tsuna promotion confirmation basho". I must say that I was surprised by this sudden promotion. Maybe I have missed something here, but I did not recall any usual tsunatori announcement including a specific target prior to Hatsu 2017 basho. Maybe they wanted to spare him another nerve-related meltdown close to the goaline...

Looking at the annual record, he is Yok material for sure, but one part of "earning" promotion is to thrive in extraordinary fashion, to fulfill or exceed very high and ambitious specifc targets, which so far he has always failed to do. Just my opinion, maybe fueled a bit by the ridiculous hero-hype machine set in motion now. I really hope it helps him to find his new role instead of falling for all the exaggerations. Well, we will see in March, I guess.

I said 13 which may also take the Yusho. We won't really know until it's sure which Yokozuna will be kyujo. I think at least 1 will be and I wouldn't be surprised if both Kakuryu and Harumafuji are out.

Since 1958 only three Yokozuna got a yusho in the first honbasho as yokozuna: Taiho 1961-11, 13-2; Takanosato 1983-09, 15-0 !!; Takanohana 1994-09, 13-2.  I think he will get 13.

I've gone uber-optimistic. I want to see Kise really get the bit between his teeth and zensho like his former shisho.

I think he'll have a horrible basho, by his standards. 10 wins, then return to form in May.

At least 13 wins.   He desperately needs/wants to show his Yokozunaship is well deserved.   Another yusho will be a huge bonus.

13.

AT LEAST runner-up, if not outright winner/play-off.

if all participate, this will be my FIRST ever basho with 4 active yokozuna.

I started in May 1991, but 2 of the 4 were out, then the wolf called it quits after day 3. I stopped following in 1995, to restart in jan 2015.

I think he will make at least 12, but I voted for 13. I can see him losing to Hakuho at the end, who then wins the basho with 14-1 to show the new Yokozuna and everyone else, that he isn't done yet.

On the other hand, I really would love to see Kisenosato plowing through everyone and win it.

I too voted for 13.
His new status as yokozuna will not hamper him in the least. The nerves which caused him to "choke" so many times at the brink of promotion are now replaced by the spirit to show his worth. I will be rooting for him all the way.

The basho is over.

Kisenosato got 13 wins as the majority of the tippers predicted correctly!

The incredible win of his yokozuna debut tournament saw only three coming: Rocks, RabidJohn, ScottyJoyJrBebe.

What a great and entertaining basho!

He technically Went 14-2 if you count the playoff

I predicted 14-1 with yusho doten, which is 14-2.

Yay for me!!(W00t,w00t,w00t...)

I was also wrong, because I went for him to zensho (and for 13 days it looked like he could), but the actual result was even more remarkable as it turned out.

Ironic that the vast majority of the correct score predicters were also wrong, because they thought it would be Kise's usual jun-yusho...

I'm just so happy  that I didn't jinx it. I watched senshuraku live after work, and I had a legitimate "Undertaker Lost at Wrestlemania" expression on my face, BOTH times. Even my wife, who is not a sumo fan broke out in a cheer for Kisenosato. It made the news here in Hawaii, as it did else where in the world. Best Basho I've watched since I restarted in Hatsu 2015.

Kisenosatoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!
