72nd Yokozuna Kisenosato preparation thread

Recommended Posts

Wonder how earth shattering this will be. His first yokozuna kit will feature the titular 3 brothers from the "Fist of the North Star" manga series.

The 2nd tsuna of Kise is 8kg, up 25% from the 6.4kg of the first, which was the 2nd lightest among the ropes of the last 10 new yokozuna, after the 6.2kg of Kakuryu's. The last 10 had an average weight of 161kg at promotion and their 1st tsuna one of on average 11.5kg. http://www.hochi.co.jp/sports/sumo/20170427-OHT1T50030.html

Shiranui style usually has a heavier tsuna though, they only should use the last 10 unryu ones for comparison.

But Hakuho's new one is also 8kg. http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1814210.html

Kisenosato not only has a manga kesho mawashi set, he now also gets a manga about himself, working title: "Kisenosato monogatari." To get published after the basho on the manga-app manga-hot and for 3 months in the monthly Comic-Zenon. http://www.asahi.com/articles/ASK585398K58UTQP01F.html

This illustration would be a good study for future Buddhist statues and carvings, especially those guarding the temple doors.  (Mickey...)

I see the manga artist has spotted Kisenosato's Vulcan salute, but he's given him a Romulan forehead!

Captured the spirit though. Mind you, mangas are the Japanese's way to "enhance" themselves, same like Western comic books to westerners.

the app isn't updated yet to show part 2 = episode 1 - the monthly free version of the last edition of Zenon was just made available in the Kindle store, it contains the prologue - different from that in the MangaHot app

And the final title of the story is: Yokozuna Raou-legend Kisenosato

Episode 1 is on the app now - no longer a  free to read one. Seems like some fraud - they had promised free access to the Kise manga if you register in advance. At least you got a contingent of 104 lives on the start of the app: one each gets used up for opening any ordinary manga episode once.

The Kise story ep. 1 is quite short - half of it baseball, the rest deciding to enter the heya. If all 3 episodes are like that, it will be not much of a story - but maybe they split it into more episodes than the 3 in the magazine.

A slightly long article has appeared, I'm not sure how many quotes are rehashed or from the YDC but anyway

https://www.nikkan-gendai.com/articles/view/sports/210098/1

In short, some trainers come in a say that if he continues to fight on these injuries retirement will catch up to Kisenosato. Another guy says an upper arm injury in martial arts is a death sentence for his career if it doesn't heal. Then some oyakata and rijicho give the 'going kyujo is OK, even until next year' that I'm pretty sure are old. Then another guy (Kisenosato himself??) says rikishi should never go kyujo. The end of the article is some comparison to a baseball player who tried to play through injury but I didn't really pay attention to that.

I wonder if a shisho with more experience or more authority  than Tagonoura Oyakata - his predecessor for example - would have told Kisenosato to sit out the basho after the injury and not return until it had completely healed. Now he has to deal with not only the upper arm injury but an ankle problem too. I really hope this time he actually skips a whole tournament for the first time in his career.

I think this has to do with a rikishi's sense of pride. They sometimes compete with injuries that would debilitate other athletes because they believe they're the strongest people around and that physical and mental strength can overcome those injuries. If their shisho agrees with their way of thinking, then the common sense  approach of resting or having necessary surgery until fully healed is lost. Sitting out a couple of bashos or more will result in a severe drop down the banzuke (except for yokozunas of course) so their preference might be to keep competing. What they don't seem to realize is that someone competing with an injury that's severe enough to impede his ability to do the sumo he's capable of to any large extent will result in a drop down the rankings anyhow--and the injury will continue to persist.

Just for hilarious effect, the depiction of Hakuho & Harumafuji. More can be found on yumekutteikt's twitter feed.

Comic:
Kisenosato: No matter who's my opponent, I'll win! Me.. I... Kisenosa...
DUN - Hakuho

Author Comment:
This month's highlight: Hakuho suddenly becomes giant sized. Before Kisenosato is promoted to Yokozuna he meets Hakuho for the 'battle' and his first time he is wholly surprised [by Hakuho's appearance]
