72nd Yokozuna Kisenosato preparation thread

Recommended Posts

I see them just fine, and I have no Facebook account.

Edit: Now here's a curious thing. I did see them just fine. I even "liked" this post a few hours ago:

But now I see the dreaded Finnish message there. I wonder if Facebook has some kind of page embedding limit?

Konishiki's numbers look better than they were in reality. In the span of 13-2Y, 12-3, 13-2Y he did not face a single Yokozuna and only one Ozeki. The crucial basho for him was the 12-3. Although the record looks good on paper he did pretty badly. His Yokozuna hopes were gone already after the first week when he was 4-3. The Yusho was won by a teenaged Maegashira with the runner-up being a 22-year old Komusubi who so far had not done better than 9-6 in his Makuuchi career. The next generation had already prematurely overtaken him in that tournament. That is far from the story you want to hear about a new Yokozuna. And the subsequent results showed how right they were in not promoting him.

There were a lot of concerns that Konishiki could not handle pressure well, that his sumo lacked a good technique, that he was too inconsistent for a Yokozuna and that his enormous weight was a huge risk for a long-lasting career. His original shisho said that he needed to make Yokozuna before age 26 because he was sure Konishiki would not last long. Especially in regards to the claims of racism it is very interesting to read the Sumo World issues of that time. They clearly stated what the expectation for Konishiki was before those basho and how he failed to achieve them.

The only thing Konishiki and Kisenosato have in common is the reputation of a choker. But the current competition is a lot tougher than in 1991 and 1992. There are three Yokozuna who all have won a Yusho last year plus two Ozeki who won one. Still Kisenosato got the best record in the calender year. I agree with everyone here who says it is not the most convincing Yokozuna promotion but I still think he deserves it. He has been a Yokozuna level rikishi for quite some time, he has a reliable style and now he has proven himself a Yusho winner. So congratulations to him and hopefully he will be able to handle the additional pressure that comes with being a Yokozuna.

Had Konishiki been much stricter in terms of weight control - and crucially not suffered the career-determining injury with Kitao in 1986 - then he would have had a greater chance of promotion.  Yes he did have great stability 1990 - 1992 but once his weight dramatically increased early 1992, his technique was pretty limited too.

I would have loved to have seen him become yokozuna but on the basis of being a success, I would have hated to seen him promoted and then having to quit soon afterwards.

I can't see them either. Instead I'm getting some Finnish message about Facebook.

I have a FB account and John's post here is a window full of Finnish text that Google translate says reads:

"This Facebook-publishing is no longer available. Publication may have been deleted or its privacy settings may have been changed."

This is the post I'm talking about

I don't think he should have been made Yokozuna and I actually agree with the points you made but come on. This teenager and 22 year old would both have more Yusho and be Ozeki within a year.

I exaggerarted a bit to make my point. At the start of 92 most people thought Takanohana was going to be great but has was still immature and unstable. Akebono was still seen as the next comig of Takamiyama because the general concensus was that his height would cause him too many balance problems. To make Yokozuna Konishiki should not have finished behind those two. And now back to the topic :-)

the 1080p videos so far

ANN (Asahi) has a whole series of news videos of the press conference of joy of the new yokozuna

the news of the ceremony itself: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTSejjZYZ3Y

Apparently the broadcast rights have been divided - and there is no Kyodo news video yet

from the live broadcast: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_Q56rNh92c

BTW, here as usual all media posts by John Gunning are empty blank spaces without even a link to grasp

However short, the ceremony  must have been agony for his master Tagonoura, who was unable to do shimpan duty last basho because of the pain in his legs and feet; replaced by  Nishiiwa, former Wakanosato.

Bottom line, Konishiki has not been promoted because he was too fat? Honestly, I doubt this. It's much more simple - the requirements have been higher back then in terms of result numbers, that's all. In 1993, Takanohana was refused promotion with 14Y-13D! Probably, had Terunofuji posted these results in 2015, he would have been.

How long does it take to dry the hemp and make the rope? I presume that they will be roping in Kakuryu's attendants to instruct them?

Please read my post again and maybe take a look at the Hatsu Basho 1992 which was the crucial one for Konishiki. Do you think today a rikishi would be promoted after that kind of basho?

What I agree with, by the way, is that Takanohana would have been promoted in the 70's like Kitanoumi was, but it had nothing to do with Konishiki. I am also not convinced that he would have been promoted today as his case is similar to Hakuho's. He was very young and sure to get promoted later on anyway so they made both earn it.

Kyodo now has a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HaLZLV_uRjE

preparing the hemp (asa-momi) yesterday: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqKW6z3EolY - better sound, worse vision: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqAu0IxYBXU

Apparently they have to start to prepare on Tuesday to have it ready for making the tsuna in the heya at the hi-fu-mi action by the ichimon rikishi. Doyho-iri training with it is Thursday.

Is he married or does he have a girlfriend?

He always said "sumo first" - the reporters are speculating that with the rope he also gets the confidence to go for the girls

Congrats to the under boss...great to see. It always looked to me that the islanders Konishki and Akubono were weak on their air swords when taken prize money. Being such an ascetic sport, could be partly why Konishki never got the rope. Spirit is first !

(Whateverabove,itisfunny...)

Maybe the reason why he won is because he has already found his muse and is keeping her away from prying eyes?

Despite the fact that they broke the recent custom of two yusho or equivalent in-a-row, I feel Kisenosato fully deserves the Yokozuna rank, for the consistency he showed, even without winning a single yusho before 2017. And I hope he will profit from the decrease of the mongolians to win several additional yusho

The father gave a comment about his hope for activities by Kise in that konkatsu direction, popularly phrased like this the last years - going for engagement. The problem is that semeru (attacking, the term also used for approaching girls) is not mainly his style - that's why his shisho's shiranui style was not right for him: shiranui signifies double attack and unryu attack and defense. The smaller rikishi like Wakanohana and Harumafuji have to use an attack style in their sumo, so shiranui was the one for them.

For him unryu was the only fitting possibility. And his choice of a simple acceptance phrase was expected - the opposite of the Hanada style of complicated 4kanji expressions.

The focus today in the wide shows seems to have shifted completely towards konkatsu, now that he's yokozuna.

Kisenosato will get the first citizen's honor award of his other hometown Ryugasaki-city, where he went to the school and which has the Kise museum room that is always shown lately. His parents' home is in Ushiku-city. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-6ZKRA0JP4

interesting, there is another counterargument that Harumafuji should have gone for Unryu since Shiranui is an double offense, hence more suitable for power sumo types like Kisenosato. http://59s-hibikor.doorblog.jp/archives/18222309.html

As for the debut kesho mawashi, Kisenosato will be using his great-predecessor's (Wakanohana 1) 3 piece oni-set.

http://www.nikkansports.com/battle/sumo/news/1770130.html

Anyone able to track down a photo of it?

With the yokozuna sets you usually can't see what the one of the yokozuna looks like - if it's the one he used for his kanreki-dohyo-iri, you can't even spot the ones for the attendants

I think I've seen the oni set in the sumo museum, but not on the net
