rhyen 1,801 Posted January 23, 2017 Looks like he is going with Unryu style, and will be coached by Shibatayama oyakata (I guess Nihonoseki ichimon has no style tradition?) http://headlines.yahoo.co.jp/hl?a=20170122-00000366-sph-spo

Kuroyama 715 Posted January 23, 2017 If I'm not mistaken -- Google Translate is especially opaque with this one -- moto-Onokuni is offering to teach Kisenosato the dohyo-iri should he be promoted, of which he is optimistic even though there has been no official announcement which is expected on the 26th. rhyen 1,801 Posted January 23, 2017 and then we have Yoshikaze saying that he needs to keep the 27th open should he be called upon.

Akinomaki 39,585 Posted January 23, 2017 (edited) The OK is given to the riji-kai and banzuke conference to promote him: and they had asked the YDC for that OK, so he is not yet yokozuna, but only the end of the world can stop him from becoming one. Now he has the time to prepare for that. Of course there will be a formal decision on Wednesday about the promotion, but the only thing that has a more than 0 probability is if it will be unanimous or not. Akinomaki 39,585 Posted January 23, 2017 (edited) Dohyo-iri style will be unryu, even though his first shisho Takanosato had used shiranui. That means 2 vs. 2 in style among the yokozuna. Tachi-mochi of course Takayasu, tsuyu-harai is planned to be Nishonoseki's Shohozan. http://mainichi.jp/articles/20170124/ddm/012/050/074000c Edited January 23, 2017 by Akinomaki
Akinomaki 39,585 Posted January 23, 2017 (edited) The YDC meeting lasted 10 minutes. They had some nice statistics (to show he's worthy): his and the winning percentage of the last 4 (the Mongolian) yokozuna in the 6 basho before promotion: he has 82%, Kakuryu 73%, Harumafuji 76%, Hakuho only 66% and Asashoryu 80%. After that no objections were heard from the YDC members. He's 3rd on the list of slowest from dohyo debut, and is the same age as his shisho Takanosato was, who was 2nd slowest. http://mainichi.jp/articles/20170124/ddm/035/050/102000c Edited January 23, 2017 by Akinomaki

Hardly seems fair for them to include Hakuho's 0-0-15 in his statistics. If they used the last six basho he actually participated in he would be on 81%. Bumpkin 438 Posted January 23, 2017 Lies, damn lies and statistics. The kyokai lowered the "two consecutive yusho or yusho equivalent" standard and everyone knows it! They did it because Kisenosato is Japanese and everyone knows it!

Bumpkin 438 Posted January 23, 2017 Kakuryu 14-1D, 14-1Y. Kisenosato 12-3J, 14-1Y. Not quite the same, is it?

Go back more than 2 basho and they look VERY different. Nothing is equivalent to 2 yusho in a span of 2 tournaments. So by definition they have to mean more than 2 tournaments. Katooshu 3,089 Posted January 23, 2017 (edited) Were they ever explicit in stating all possibilities that the yusho equivalent included? Maybe 4 jun-yusho in your last 5 equals a yusho I think it's reasonable to consider performance over more than the last 2 tournaments, and considering how strong Kise has generally been I think his promotion is acceptable, though I understand why people take issue with it. Akinomaki 39,585 Posted January 23, 2017 Everyone believes in a some codified standard that says "yusho equivalent" - there is none. It is simply the result that follows right after the yusho - and if that result is 2 wins behind, it is still the next best: but then there is more needed to get accepted for a yokozuna promotion. Kisenosato has provided that with his mass of jun-yusho and most wins last year - had he been yokozuna with those results last year, no one would have called for his retirement, like is done all the time for Harumafuji and Kakuryu.
Katooshu 3,089 Posted January 23, 2017 (edited) I agree. People get so caught up with the multiple yusho, but winning the most bouts in a year and consistently producing strong results in a way that at least two of the other yoks arent shouldn't just be brushed aside. Going by recent performance he fits right in with the current yokozuna, and is clearly beyond the other ozeki. Edited January 23, 2017 by Katooshu
