If I'm not mistaken Takanohana used to be a special columnist for Nikkan before he joined the NSK's board of directors, so it's not the most outrageous idea... In any case, I nearly forgot the last bit of data for this thread - the final records of the former sekitori in the lower divisions: 5-2 Ms1e Kitaharima (Yamahibiki, 30, 1) 2-5 Ms1w Asasekiryu (Takasago, 35, 1) 3-4 Ms2e Asabenkei (Takasago, 27, 2) 5-2 Ms3e Fujiazuma (Tamanoi, 29, 2) 3-4 Ms4e Daishoho (Oitekaze, 22, 1) 4-3 Ms6e Meisei (Tatsunami, 21, 1) 6-1 Ms6w Toyonoshima (Tokitsukaze, 33, 2) 1-6 Ms7e Shotenro (Fujishima, 34, 5) 1-6 Ms9e Sadanofuji (Sakaigawa, 32, 1) 5-2 Ms9w Akiseyama (Kise, 31, 4) 2-5 Ms12w Tenkaiho (Onoe, 32, 4) 4-3 Ms13e Shimanoumi (Kise, 27, 3) 4-3 Ms13w Tochihiryu (Kasugano, 29, 12) 3-4 Ms15w Jokoryu (Kise, 28, 4) 4-3 Ms16e Sakigake (Shibatayama, 30, 12) 5-2 Ms17e Dewahayate (Dewanoumi, 27, 3) 2-5 Ms17w Kagamio (Kagamiyama, 28, 4) 3-4 Ms22w Nionoumi (Yamahibiki, 30, 21) 2-5 Ms23e Oiwato (Hakkaku, 35, 19) 4-3 Ms23w Tokushinho (Kise, 32, 7) 5-2 Ms24e Abi (Shikoroyama, 22, 8) 2-5 Ms27e Sotairyu (Tokitsukaze, 34, 11) 4-3 Ms31e Higonojo (Kise, 32, 16) 5-2 Ms32e Chiyoarashi (Kokonoe, 25, 21)0-1-6 Ms33e Hishofuji (Azumazeki, 27, 32) 3-4 Ms33w Dewaotori (Dewanoumi, 31, 61) 6-1 Ms39w Takaryu (Kise, 24, 9) 5-2 Ms45e Kotomisen (Sadogatake, 33, 19) 5-2 Ms46e Keitenkai (Onomatsu, 26, 26) 6-1 Ms47e Sagatsukasa (Irumagawa, 35, 17) 2-5 Ms47w Yoshiazuma (Tamanoi, 39, 14) 3-4 Sd5w Masakaze (Oguruma, 33, 25) 2-5 Sd6e Hitenryu (Tatsunami, 32, 32) 2-5 Sd8w Kaonishiki (Azumazeki, 38, 32)kyujo Sd50e Masunoyama (Chiganoura, 26, 11) 6-1 Sd65e Dairaido (Takadagawa, 36, 62) Hishofuji has retired, so we'll be having 36 ex-sekitori next basho as well. Ahogeyama 8 Posted January 26, 2017 Looking at that Makushita lineup, I'd argue that I'm more excited about this list of wrestlers than I am about the upcoming Juryo lineup.

Bumpkin 438 Posted January 26, 2017 I predict Ms4w Takagenji (5-2) will be at Ms1e and Ms6w Toyonoshima (6-1) will be at Ms1w.
Gurowake 3,791 Posted January 26, 2017 (edited) Who I have in Makuuchi for GTB may well differ from what's implied by the following projection of Juryo and makushita-joi. Asanoyama was previous known as Ishibashi. Not surprising that Asashosakari and I have the same for the top of Makushita, and then only a few one-off switches until further down, when things start getting much murkier. Ack! 399 Posted January 28, 2017 So with a KK, Toyonoshima should be back in the paid ranks after March. I wonder if Aminishiki will be able to hang on in juryo? Knowing the big difference between sekitori and makushita, I wonder how former sekitori get by when they drop off. If a rikishi is married, how would they handle that? Would that be rationale for retirement vs. staying on? Does one have to give up a separate apartment?
Asashosakari 18,156 Posted January 29, 2017 (edited) Even though sekitori salaries aren't that great by professional sports standards, I'm fairly sure most of these guys aren't forced to live paycheck to paycheck, so I would hope Toyonoshima isn't seeing his back account emptied out by six months in makushita. I think veterans retiring when they drop down is usually more of a "can't see himself ever getting back up" thing, so they decide to look for other paid work or just start taking an oyakata salary. Toyonoshima clearly feels he has something left in the tank, so it's worth the pay drop for him. As for the status issues - it probably differs from heya to heya, but in general I believe that a veteran rikishi's standing in his stable is determined by more than just his present banzuke ranking. They're not usually going to force guys like Toyonoshima back into communal living. (Although I vaguely recall a story of an unmarried veteran some years ago who did it voluntarily to motivate himself...)
