With the new year, comes the new wall. Also a lot of strange stuff happening this basho on The Wall.

First off is three sekitori on The Wall, which is the most since I took over. Second, the average age of The Wall is very high now.

Sakamoto became Daiamami of course, and more near the base of The Wall, Tsunetsugu became Sakaekaze.

Hokutofuji can grab his 100th match on The Wall this basho.

Finishing up and catching up, this is the result from Hatsu basho.

The big result was that the 3 sekitori rikishi all got kachikoshi and Ishibashi found the zenshou yushou so we will have 4 sekitori in Haru!

Added this time are the two fujis from Isegahama beya. Nishikifuji has beaten Midorifuji twice at the kettei-sen playoff for those 2 yusho.

Note that W-L record is not correct here.

Midorifuji Isegahama 20 2016.11 2 Sandanme 19w 0 14 0 1.000 7-0 D 0-0

Here we go with the line-up for Haru in this year. Ishibashi changed shikona to Asanoyama on his promotion to sekitori-hood, and Umeno changed to the unwieldy-in-English Tsushimanada. This might be the smallest line-up for this year with the flood of 50+ shindeshi coming in - we should take on about 20 from that group initially. Don't forget about the Isegahama party that was two months early, either.

Finally caught up, here is the standings on Nakabi for the Haru basho. Mirroring the strangeness happening in Makuuchi, the best performing sekitori so far is Daiamami of 4-3 record fame. Takemasa isn't finding his large promotion to be very comforting. The only rikishi already at kachikoshi is Kotoinagaki, who has the lowest win rate of the whole bunch!

Here's the inter-Wall bouts picked out, which is mostly Tsushimanada picking on Isegahama beya

Here's the bout-by-bout information with very nearly every bout having video coverage uploaded.

The Wall is consecutive kachikoshi from start of career. Persistence Watch (in honbasho thread) is the opposite, consecutive makekoshi from start of career.

We have to say goodbye to 11 consecutive kachikoshi Hokutofuji (moto Daiki) who came a lot closer to kachikoshi than I thought. His last basho record against joi-quality rikishi was not good at all, and it followed up with some more of the same. His banzuke climb rival Ura peeled off The Wall a few basho ago but they'll be within shouting distance again next basho.

All our Juryo members managed a kachikoshi this time to keep the sekitori from dropping below 3, since there wasn't a possibility for a new join this basho. Daiamami once again slid by at 8-7, returning to his old habits. Asanoyama got to the 10-5 Juryo playoffs but lost in what culminated in a pair of fairly basic matches. With a large number of demotable rikishi and 3rd in the Juryo promotion line we should see Oyanagi in Makuuchi next basho, but the lower half of Makuuchi looks like it will be on the strong side compared to recent basho next time, so he has his work cut out for him.

Ichiki really ran into The Wall this time, all of his wins coming against similarly struggling rikishi.

All of last year's Natsu debutants survived this time, Kizaki is the top of the pack and will get promoted near Makushita-joi. But he won't be in for Juryo in 2 basho outside of a 7-0 Yusho or exceptional 6-1 situation.

Asahiryu somewhat surprisingly hit the wall after blanking on his last 3 matches. I haven't seen video but there was some disappointment on Twitter about the way the matches went.

Tsuchimanada (moto Umeno) punked the Isegahama duo this basho and will go on to Makushita. Nishikifuji and Midorifuji both had struggles but ultimately with different outcomes. Their small size became apparent in this basho.

Finally, we welcome 3 more rikishi, all 18 years old and the Isegahama stream continues a bit. Not much to say except that this is probably going to be the weakest class to join The Wall for a while.

Well, if you are going to hit a wall, and barely scrape it going 7-8 despite an injury,  M5 is the place to do it. Much respect to Hokutofuji. One heck of a starting run.

Poor Yutakayama, even I didn't think he'd do this bad. Hopefully it pisses him off. He may just win the Juryo yusho next basho.  In fact I think he probably will.

That's wall she wrote, folks!

The Wall came up big this basho in a way that hasn't been seen in a long time. Only 5 of our existing rikishi managed to pass and each one only by a single win.

2/3rds of the sekitori rikishi hit the wall and Yutakayama crashed big time earning an early trip to Juryo in the process. Asanoyama just passed, but that was the story for most Juryo rikishi this basho.

Kizaki and Takemasa both passed the wall by the skin of their teeth. Neither of them are going to go up enough to seriously factor into any promotion race bar a surprise yusho.

Tsushimanada doubled his career loss count this basho as his 'Ura-lite' approach to sumo finally caught up to him in mid-Makushita. This basho's experience I think mirrors what a lot of people imagined could've happened to Ura himself when he reached upper Makushita.

Midorifuji is another Wall member coming up with a 4-3 and his size disadvantage is already becoming in apparent in his bouts at the bottom of Makushita. He's very clearly giving it his all in the matches and it could have been easily 2-5 or 5-2 record. A loss: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PhF2P3RLaFs

Within the new members we have the two sandanme entrants of last basho Murata and Wakatakakage. Both are from current powerhouse Toyo University and they met to decide the Sandanme yusho in ketteisen. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NfxNYIY4CHs

Wakatakakage won with authority in that match. He has two brothers who have had some success in upper Makushita but haven't really been poised to breakthrough to Juryo. Father and grandfather experience in sumo rounds out the pedigree. Perhaps he can pull his brothers up along with him?

Ichiyamamoto is the top of the new members who passed through Jonokuchi and gave up a desk job in some government office to join through the new age limit. Right now he looks fine but has some work to do to be able to pass through Makushita. His only loss so far: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tp2sagLjltI

Ryuko has had some success in primary school amasumo, but like Ichiyamamoto seems to need to work on core strength a bit. However he has the advantage of being 5 years younger. Here is the Ryuko-Ichiyamamoto matchup from Haru - it is quite long: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vOXqJlLWny4

I'm travelling and can't update the chart right now (but I have seen Chiyoo outside somehow) but here's an overview of the many many things that happened.

Takemasa, Midorifuji, Hikarifuji, and Shido have all already met the wall quite early on and won't be joining us again.

Our lone sekitori Asanoyama raced to an 8-0 kachikoshi but has had trouble the past couple days with former makuuchi regulars. He's going to have to work hard for the yusho now.

Ryuko is the other yusho candidate right now at 5-0 in Sandanme and will be facing 36 year old Asatenmai (5-0) today.

Ichiyamamoto also has secured kachikoshi but unexpectedly dropped his match against Sandanme regular Mitozakura, so is not factoring into any yusho right now.

I'm really far behind on this! I've been active on the forums too, so I can't even give an excuse...

Anyway, to keep it short: Senior member Takemasa went out, our top boy Asanoyama got promoted to Makuuchi with a playoff loss, the two fuji's are out, and Kizaki gets to get nearly joi positioning for next basho.

Also the giant wave from the Haru intake finally hit. Yago is up to Juryo and Enho has been doing much better than his Haru peers despite his size.

Woo!

This is the lineup for Aki!

Ok, I take back all the nice things I said about the forum update. It seems all font information gets stripped including bolding, having to re-add manually after pasting.

Other than me complaining, except for the very bottom, nobody is in massive trouble yet. Yago had a rough start but has nearly recovered. Enho still doing well in upper Sandanme and has KK by nakabi, so has Tanabe.
