I do wonder: Will Kisenosato and his stablemaster change his Shikona if he gets the nod?

I'd prefer not, but who knows?

I don't know if I'm right, but I always think of the technique prize as being the most prestigeous

You are right :-)

After 15 years? Not likely.

Really pleased for Kisenosato. We can reasonably expect an uptick in sumo's popularity in Japan now. I think even his detractors would have to concede that he is and has consistently been a cut above the other ozeki during his tenure.

Special prizes rained onto the appropriate rikishi, and a good job of it considering the amazing performances we saw this basho. 2017 is going to be crazy!

I agree it's very unlikely. Maybe a slight chance he may want to honour his late shisho and become Takanosato II (but that's pure speculation of course).

A good number of cries of "Yokozuna!" before the parade too!

Yeah, I noticed that too. The reaction in the Kokugikan when the YDC was mentioned in Kise's yusho interview was also noticeable. Public opinion counts, and what they want is a Japanese yokozuna.

Just read something earlier today that "kise" was based on part of Takanosato's acceptance phrase for his own yokozuna promotion, so one could argue Kisenosato's been honouring him all along.

Hokutoumi (61st Yokozuna) was promoted after 12-3Y, 13-2J.

Also notable, Takanosato (59th Yokozuna) had a run of 12-3J and 13-2J but didn't get promoted until he achieved 14-1Y in the next basho (the 3 basho after that was 15-0Y, 13-2J, 13-2Y)

Futagahiro (60th Yokozuna) was promoted after 12-3J, 14-1D. No yusho at all. This was in 1986.

Onokuni (62nd Yokozuna) went 15-0Y and 12-3J, but didn't get promoted until he followed that up with 13-2J.

As I said earlier,  it's unlike that Kise would lose to Hakuho on day 15.

Nice video. At first he didn't know what to do, until Takayasu startet waving and then his smile. So sweet :)

And since when do they drive Audi?

Congratulations to you yokozuna Kisenosato ! After living in Hakuho's shadow for so many years you finally came out into sunshine. Next basho will be tough and from now on many rikishi will try to beat you for golden stars. Hope you will not let your fans down!

It's been an Audi for a while, though it also sticks out for me that it's not a Japanese car anymore. Then again I guess it's probably some kind of a sponsorship deal.

And well done to Kisenosato! It's also the first time in his career that he's able to get 14 wins and he got the best reward possible for this achievement.

delighted for Kisenosato. Fully deserved after all this time. Hakuho's tournament, including this match, was a weird one though. He never looked weak, he always looked in control, most of these 4 losses were some weird self-defeating momentary slip ups. Not too sure what's up, I guess sometimes that's just the way the ball bounces.

Kisenosato is being promoted to yokozuna after 73 tournaments in makuuchi, the slowest ever. But he is not quite the record holder for most tournaments at ozeki before promotion: Kotozakura and Musashimaru both took one tournament longer, at 32.

Happy birthday.

Thanks.

And to add something to the conversation. I'm sad to Kotoshogiku demoted, but I really enjoyed the rare kimarite in the top two divisions. It was a really different experience watching this basho to the others. It had a much different feel to it. I seemed to get the impression of more excitement (not just because of Kise, but also I think people caught a glimpse of whom the top rikishi of the near future might actually be).

There also was something in the news about being the slowest from dohyo debut.

Oh, to hell with my grumpiness. Let the man be the next Yokozuna :D

Which Yokozuna you think will retire in the next few basho? Ama seems the less fit. Or maybe, just maybe, a surprise Intai from Hak.

That's not right, that record is still held by Mienoumi

By day 7 of March basho we'll know. Anyway, it's difficult for four yokozuna to coexist. Haru and Kaku will not last long ...

Hakuho is one year's older than Kise? They are as healthy as each other and will continue for a few more years.

There are a lot of trophies.

I think I spotted the magic hamburger (or something like that). It was blue or purple.

Its a giant macaron - you occasionally see it on the live broadcast, if they aren't pressed for time. This one was pink, but it was gold last time (I think).

I like to think Hakuho has an understairs cupboard stuffed with them from all his yushos.

I remember seeing some post on the forum about it not long ago. It looked kind of purple-y to me, but I'm kind of colorblind.

I don't even know what one would do with it besides jamming it in some closet.
