Basho Talk - Hatsu Basho 2017 ** (SPOILERS)

Recommended Posts

Two curiosities:
1)  what is are the all-time lowest ranks for the senshuraku #3 bout? likely lower than today's S1E vs M5E?  (note: it was nice seeing takekaze in his first "dance")
2)
when was the last time we had TWO 4-10 ozekis on the final day!!!!???

Thought he lost it, but Kise stood in there like a champ. I think it's locked in now!

Sokokurai jun-yusho. Who would've thought? Hats off to him as well.

When will they announce if he gets promoted? I am new to Sumo and currently in Japan so was watching on tv from Osaka but not understanding a word. I did manage to get to days 6&9 when I was in Tokyo so I saw Kisenosato win and lose.

It's not official. The YDC (Yokozuna Deliberation Committee) hasn't even met yet, and the Sumo Association will take no action until they do and make a recommendation. But there have been public statements from various figures involved in the decision that would lead one to infer the promotion is virtually in the bag.

Hmmm warm feelings abound yesterday and today, and seems to be more coming with the imminent announcement yokozuna announcement. What a time to be a sumo fan. Can't wait for the next few years to unfold. Here's hoping an young, aspiring Indonesian boy is watching Moti's recap videos, decide to come to Japan, overcome all odds, and become a prominent member of the sport in the years to come. That would be the COOLEST! Fingers crossed!

That was a cracking good basho. Some amazing sumo, some really rare kimarite, some crazy good performances from a couple of rikishi you wouldn't expect it of, a couple of the young guys smoked it, the tops guys dropping like flies, Kise wins the yusho (finally) and then at the end, the Kid vs. the GOAT for all the bananas. Total enjoyment from start to finish.

I am presuming Kise will be a Yok now and I am very happy about that. Can't wait for March.

Finally, looking forward to seeing a photo of Kise with the big fish.

The last time two gino-sho were awarded was Aki 2012. Toyonoshima and sekiwake Kakuryu were the recipients.

Seven kinboshi handed out this basho, Hak and Ama handing out two each with Kak handing out the most at three.

Satoyama vs Ura was a crackiing great bout too. Looking very much forward to next basho and what Ura can do to the big boys.

Oh, that was awesome! Hak appeared to give it everything he had, and it wasn't enough. Kise has actually looked like a yokozuna all through the basho, and I'm now thinking he  could be the sole yok come the end of the year. Haru and Kak are knackered, and Hak may well call it after he tops Kaio's record if he can't do better than 11-12 wins each time.

I think the awarding of the sansho is telling. You'd have thought both Takayasu and Mitakeumi were obvious candidates for the shukun-sho with their multiple Y/O victories, but clearly Takanoiwa's kinboshi over Hak is regarded as way more valuable than Mitakeumi's 2 from Haru and Kak (ditto Taka's sanyaku victories).

Two gino-sho as well. That's not common, is it? I don't know if I'm right, but I always think of the technique prize as being the most prestigeous, and I'm chuffed to bits for both Mitakeumi and Sokokurai - especially for the latter's jun-yusho.

Agreed, it looked like Hak gave it his all. 12 months ago that would have been enough but not now. I cheered when Kise won that one. I think Kak will hang on for a while yet, but I can see a HF intai soon (unfortunately) and who knows what Hak will do now his aura of invincibility has slipped. Good times ahead:).

The YDC has yet to give the OK - they do that always after 2 yusho, but for a yusho and one next best performance, a 2/3 majority is necessary. In Kise's case we can expect a unanimous decision - had he lost today it might have been just enough in favor to hand him the rope.

The party starts after the YDC announcement tomorrow. Then Kise will be no yokozuna yet, but a yokozuna to be born, and he will practice the acceptance phrase. The riji-kai and banzuke conference on Wednesday never says no, they send the messenger(s) to the heya (quite a ride) to tell them that Kise is yokozuna now by the decision of the riji-kai.

Ok so...

S: Takayasu, Tamawashi, Kotoshogiku (if not retired)

K: Mitakeumi, Shodai

That seem about right?

I would love it if this were the case. How often do we see it that all Sekiwake and Komusubi have legitimate Ozeki hopes?

I do wonder: Will Kisenosato and his stablemaster change his Shikona if he gets the nod?

I'd prefer not, but who knows?
