He took advantage and was promoted. Now Kisenosato has met the same criteria. People can say that 12-3J is a weak record but tournaments have been won with 12-3 (35 times if my query was right) and 11-4 twice has been good enough to win as well. These are on the lines of "if X gets KK he will get prize Z" or "if X defeats Y, he will get prize Z", or "X has done enough to get prize Z". These decisions have to be voted on as well. btw, Yokozuna promotion announcement will not happen right after the end of matches today. I've been paying attention since before Musashimaru was promoted, and the announcement has always happened a day later. Morty 1,480 Posted January 22, 2017 Kise's career trajectory has been that he gets to a certain level of performance and then stays there for a while before working out how to get to the next level. Once at that next level he is successful and performs at that level until he works out how to go up and so on. This (Yusho and Yok) has been the hardest level for him to get to - it has taken him five years and he has had the most dominant Yok in history in his way the whole time. But he has finally done it. I would expect that he will now do what he has always done: he will settle into his new rank and will excel at it. This yusho isn't a fluke and there will be others I think. The Asahafuji and Musashimaru comparisons others have made are probably very good comparisons and I expect that when he retires in a couple of years, nobody will be saying he was a bad Yok. 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Kisenosato doesn't get injured and is truly the iron man of sumo, like others have mentioned. Even if his past two tournaments haven't been ideal, I won't be mad or anything if he gets the rope. He has been great and I would personally give it to him if he gets 14 wins for the first time tomorrow. I think the sansho discussion will be very interesting with so many guys doing exceedingly well. What is the record for most sansho? Is there some tournament where they handed out 5+? At the top, we lose two ozeki, with Kisenosato going up and Kotoshogiku going down (and hopefully retiring as an ozeki instead of next basho as a sekiwake). Kisenosato's promotion means there will be four yokozuna, but that isn't going to last long, and I expect within the next two or three basho either Harumafuji or Kakuryu (or both!) will retire too. Of the former sanyaku/jo'i bordermen, Tochiozan and Myogiryu look like they will at the very least be dropping to lower maegashira, not only in Haru, but probably for good. And clearly it's not going to be long before Terunofuji puts together back to back mks either, unless his health issue resolves. So there is going to be a lot of room open at the top. It will be interesting to see who steps up - Takayasu, Ichinojo, Shodai, Mitakeumi, Hokutofuji, seem the most likely candidates to me. In any case, we aren't going to have only two (or even one) ozeki for long. And speaking of Kotoshogiku being demoted (exactly one year after winning the yusho), here's a guy who was sekiwake for 10 basho and many, if not most, followers of sumo doubted would ever make ozeki, never mind become the first Japanese to yusho in more than a decade. In a sport full of disappointments and underachievers, he was an overachiever. I was never a huge fan of his hump and bump (limited) technique, but I admire him for the fact that he has achieved more than many other rikishi who seem to have been blessed with superior talent. 6 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

They just, truly *just* (as in the last 2-3 minutes) updated the English side to include Mitakeumi. They forget the English side sometimes. (doesn't explain why they had the other 3 names there) Too late now to check the web page on the Japanese side, see how many names they had listed. On Wednesday the actual decision of the riji-kai and banzuke conference is the last step - only then he's promoted. But usually the whole process can't be stopped once it gets set into motion - only if some part had announced objections in advance.
