YDC top Moriya, who had urged HF to go intai soon, is now sympathetic: "Isn't it better to come to the basho thoroughly recovered? When one feels one can't do it properly, to recover fully and then enter is in my view also a way to act." http://www.daily.co.jp/general/2017/01/15/0009830867.shtml

With Mitakeumi and Arawashi joining the club this basho, there are currently 30 active rikishi who have won a kinboshi, with a combined 66 kinboshi between them. The last time there were 30 active winners was way back in the 1991 Aki basho! That group, which included double-digit collectors Ozutsu and Akinoshima, had a combined 85 kinboshi.

Also the first basho in over 25 years (Nagoya 1991) in which two maegashira have each won multiple kinboshi.

If the last dozen basho's pattern holds, it's Shodai's turn to make-koshi as a sekitory as Mitakeumi did in the last basho.   Shodai has been one step behind Mitakeumi in their respective career.   He should watch what Mita is doing now as he will repeat it in the next basho.  I.e, two kinboshi for Shodai in the next basho as a joi.  ;-):-)

That's my logic for Mitakeumi becoming an ozeki before Shodai :P.

Methinks Ura in Makuuchi will be similar to Takamisakari - popular and the crowd love him because of the quirkyness and unpredictability, but probably never going much higher than the middle of maegashira.

Yeah, it's possible that he won't be able to rise to Sanyaku... You compare him to Takamisakari, but he reminds me more of Takanoyama, the guy from the Czech Republic. Takamisakari's charm was his eagerness, and his self-beating. Takanoyama and Ura use rare techniques, and they both beat bigger rikishi with speed, strength and wilyness. IMHO.  :)

Can someone more knowledgeable about sumo explain to me what Hakuho was trying to do? I'm still relatively new to the sport. My first thought was he tried to henka and got caught, but no I don't think so. He definitely clashed then stepped and twisted to the side while holding on, was he trying some kind of throw? In any case Arawashi got a good grip, strongly followed him around the spin, suddenly found himself in front of Hakuho at the edge and went "all right, well out you go, then".

It certainly look like he tried to throw and somehow Arawashi held on. The attempt was so strong that it dragged Hakhu around to the edge where he was easy pickin's.

I was beginning to find Takekaze a bit monotonous with his side step and slap down routine, then he went and did that ipponzeoi today. Wow, what a move!

Takekaze's ipponzeoi is the seventh in Makuuchi since 1927. Just the seventh! The first was in 1929 (may) and spent more than 45 years for the next 1974 (Kyûshû). The 21st century is more generous: there are 5 ipponzeoi since 2000 and two of them by Takekaze.

That tournament, not coincidentally,  saw the worst ever records for a basho with two yokozuna - Hokutoumi 9-6, Asahifuji 8-7.

Shodai is sure to follow if Mita makes it to Ozeki.   This may be a great rivalry in development.

I think they better get a consultant.

Shodai and Mitakeumi, perhaps something vaguely similar to Kisenosato and Kotoshogiku...?

Why not? Perhaps not in style of sumo, but can definitely see the two guys facing each other every single basho for the next 8-10 years, injury-preventing.

Damn.  Hokutofuji blew Endo away.  Will see how Hoku does as a joi (if he keeps on winning in this basho).  He looked impressive in this basho.

Aminishki won today.   Even in winning, he looked bad.   I expect him to retire soon one way or another.

You all remember the thing about Endo, don't you? This is a guy with a yusho and 2 Jun-yusho on his record, 4 sansho prizes, and 4 kinboshi, yet he has a very peculiar wall he's not yet gotten over, around, under or through. He's been ranked at M4 or higher 6 times before, and has never gotten his KK from there. It's not like he's not had chances. He's gone on to MK after being at 6-6 on a day 12, and 7-6 on a day 13.  This basho he's at M4 and 4-5 after day 9. Is he on the way to MK #7 from the "meatgrinder" or will he find his way through this time? (he has not yet faced anyone ranked higher than M1) After some of his performances, you've got to wonder

Hatsu means first

meeting in top division, basically first meeting of faces in top division. Kao is face.
