So, how will the top of the banzuke look in a little over a year from now?

Please leave your actual prediction for the top two ranks for the January 2018 banzuke in the comments below like this...

Vordemort Y1 Harry
Hermione Y2 Draco
Dumbledore Y3
Snape O1 McGonagall
Dobby O2 Ron

etc

- then we can see who is closest at the end of the year, to award a yusho for this poll.

Previous polls:
2016
2015
2014
2013
2012 - not polled
2011
2010
2009
2008

Even with natural house elf skills there is no way Dobby gets beyond Sandanme.

I'm not bullish on anyone to make ozeki this coming year. I think Shodai will need more time, pretty much all the regulars are too beat up or aging. As for new blood, Ishiura is too small, Regular Ura needs to get healthy, and Mitakeumi isn't panning out.

I picked Terunofuji & Kotoshogiku to lose their Ozeki ranking by the start of 2018 basho.   The rest Yokozuna & Ozeki stay in their rank.  No new Ozeki in 2017 although I think Shodai will give it a run.

I honestly think things will stay much like they are now. The Gik might drop down to sekiwake, but I still think he'll be back to ozeki by Jan 2018. I think he'll retire in 2018, although. I chose him in question one because I think he is the one in the bunch with the greatest chance to drop out. There should have been an option for "all still at Y/O," even if seems unlikely at the moment.

Not any strong ozeki candidates right now, in my opinion.

Option now added (at the bottom of Q1).  My apologies to those who have already answered.

He's also too low. 6 basho is nearly impossible to get an ozeki run within when you're ranked at M9-10 to begin with.

Wakanohana III is the most recent of the three rikishi who have managed this feat in the 6 basho per year era.   (Wakanohana started his run at M9, the other two at M13).

Fantastic find! Though Wakanohana did have joi experience before that year, including a stint at komusubi.  However, neither of the other two rikishi did. For the record, they are Sadanoyama (only a kyujo-yasumi at M4) and Taihou (at his highest rank).

Inspired by Benihana and his "wild guess" I predict the following ;-)

Hakuho Y1 Kisenosato

Kakuryu Y2 Harumafuji

Goeido O1 Mitakeumi

Terunofuji will drop out of the Top 2 and Kotoshogiku will have retired by then

Kakuryu Y2 Terunofuji
Kisenosato O1 Goeido
Kotoshogiku O2

Ambitious guesses by me...

Terunofuji (aided by the 'Mongolian Yokozuna factor') will get his promotion to Yokozuna this year.

Kotoshogiku (thanks to the 'OBSC') will keep his Ozeki rank!

Hakuho Y2

Terunofuji O1 Kisenosato

Goeido O2 Okinoumi

Wishful thinking for Okinoumi, but if he can heal up then I think he might just squeak in.

Kotoshogiku will be demoted, but stick around as a Maegashira, rather than retire.
