I am new to Sumo Forum and would just like to reach out to those members who are more knowledgeable and in touch with current developments in sumo. News on Wednesday revealed that 12 wrestlers from the Oitekaze Stable have announced their retirements after the Kyushu Tournament. According to stats from May 2014 (Wiki), there were a total of 18 wrestlers in that stable. The fact that 12 have called it quits at the same time sounds fishy to me. Does anyone know if there has been an incident at that stable to provoke the mass exodus? See this thread:

It all began in 2013 when the then-current Kasugayama-oyakata (ex-Hamanishiki) was sued by the former Kasugayama-oyakata (ex-Kasugafuji) for not making the required payments for the heya. You can read about the whole thing here. If time is short, there's a pretty good summary of the entire mess here. Edited December 2, 2016 by Fukurou

I suppose allowing Nakagawa Oyakata to open his own heya is not an option. Afterall, he is the de facto shisho for the remaining wrestlers.

Churaumi 728 Posted December 2, 2016 The high end of juryo didn't produce much in the way of prospects for makuuchi promotions. I am a little surprised Sato didn't get a chance, but maybe he was too new still?

The debate is over the third spot - Daieisho or Osunaarashi.

I haven't seen anything on a number moving up or down in regard to makuuchi, has there been something?

Kyokushuho, Hidenoumi and Toyohibiki should be impossible to keep, so at least one more promotee will have to be found, and the choice is arguably limited to Daieisho and Osunaarashi. The loser of that decision will find himself compared to Sadanoumi, and I daresay the makuuchi incumbent will have the edge there, leaving us with just three exchanges. I'm inclined to give the nod to Osunaarashi for slot #3, but given his doghouse status in recent banzuke-making sessions it's definitely not a sure thing. Chiyoo will get promoted because they need someone to promote besides Sato. In fact they need 2.

There are 4 Makuichi rikishi who deserves to be demoted but only 3 who deserved to be promoted from Juryo. Given how strong Osu looked before the injury took over, he probably can do better at Makuuchi (pending recovery from injury) than any other remaining Juryo candidate. I think Daiesho over Osunarrashi too. Given Sadanoumi's 3-12 this basho and his miserable record overall in makkuchi I would love to see him down in Juryo but it isn't going to happen IMO. Besides there not being 4 really requiring promotion, Sadanoumi has the Devils own luck, he must have dirt on somebody or something because he had 4 MKs in a row yet dropped only 1 spot on the banzuke. Churaumi 728 Posted December 2, 2016 I think Daiesho over Osu is reasonable. Daisho can finish a basho, Osu fell off hard the last third.
rzombie1988 157 Posted December 2, 2016 I'd go Osunaarashi over Daisho and I hope Icihinojo gets demoted.

I wanted to see both Ichinojo & Gagamaru in juryo which I think will create more exciting matches and yusho drama. But both will stay in Makuuchi. I hope they get matched up with Ishiura. I don't think Ishiura will go 2-0 against those two this time. Osu with promotion on the line went AWOL (so to speak). The injury must have been pretty serious. His aging, brittle body just can't take a full basho anymore ? Edited December 2, 2016 by robnplunder
Andonishiki 168 Posted December 18, 2016 (edited) first - I dont think a J4w (ranked #8) should get a promotion with a 8-7, even though I am aware that a banzuke is a relative ranking among rikishi. second - J6e is rank #11 and 9 wins should lift J6e ahead of J4w with 8-7 it's just three ranks difference in mid-Juryo but one win more.... so, if i purely look at the numbers, to me it looks clear. but if u check the actual person behind the numbers, then past banzuke treatment, symphathy issues, injuries etc...then i can understand the pro Daieisho 'movement'; he's from Saitama / Oitekaze-beya. nevertheless, I go with Osuna in, Daieisho out. Ramses has earned it, imho and Makuuchi is more fun with him. Please have an injury free 2017 ! I'd love to see Daieisho in as well in exchange for boring Sadanoumi (had 8 mk during last 9 basho with a 56-79 record, but only dropped from M1 to M15/16 probably). Would be perfectly fine to put a bit of bad banzuke luck on him -> J1... but I doubt the kyokai will hear my pledge Edited December 20, 2016 by Andonishiki
Unkonoyama 104 Posted December 20, 2016 Sigh, I missed the deadline this basho. I would have promoted Daieisho over Osu as the third promotion because, well you know. Sadanoumi will hopefully just hang on and I get to watch him for at least one more basho.
