Aoiyama henkaed 2 days in a row?

And he improved immensely in just 24 hours. Tomorrow: hasso-tobi attempt.

Terunofuji fought harder than I thought he would. Kisenosato almost fell victim to another failed mawashi. I wonder if these guys are tying it loosely on purpose? But when Terrorfuji went for that grip change he was toast.

I would pay very good money to see that

First kotenage by Hakuhou since Nagoya 2014

Hakuho looked a lot more focused today. I thought Harumafuji would beat him easily. Wow.

They'd need a crane for that.

Dang video stopped. Congrats to Kakuryu. But Harumafuji lost so you know what that means? With a win tomorrow Kisenosato is jun-yusho and back on the Yokozuna train! Wooo-woooooooo!

Well, they have given him Takarafuji who has a 1-13 record against him.

Couldn't believe it myself.

Too bad Goeido lost, would have been an exciting day 15 with still a chance on a Kisenosato yusho. Jun-yusho still possible.

At least Aminishiki got his KK, makes this day not a total downer for me.

Yes, and Endo is facing Tamawashi. I'm thinking if Endo wins they will promote him at 8-7 over a 9-6 Takarafuji if he loses to Kisenosato.

I think Takyasu will beat Terunofuji and save his sanyaku spot just dropping to Komusubi So:

Sekiwake Shodai and Tamawashi

Komusbi Takyasu and either Endo/Takarafuji.

Congrats to Kakuryu. My favorite Yokozuna by far!

Three guys on 7-7. Who gets their kachi-koshi?

Endo (7-7) vs. Tamawashi (9-5)

Takekaze (8-6) vs. Ichinojo (7-7)

Myogiryu (7-7) vs. Lord Gaga (8-7)

3 guys with a shot at Jun-yusho and Kisenosato with a chance to start another Yokozuna run? Oh lordy. If all three somehow lose and if Hakuho, Ikioi and Ishiura win, we'll have a 7 way tie for Jun-yusho. Has something as ridiculous as that happened before?

Meanwhile, can't wait to see Sato in Makuuchi. Only 20 as well... for all the hype around Ura, I quite like Sato myself. Would really like him to pick up the Juryo yusho.

Just a little juryo observation, Kyokutaisei is on a 7 bout winning streak, looking impressive.

Congratulations to Kakuryu.

Favorite win of the day would be Kotoyuki with the KO. Straight-up flattened Hidenoumi there in about as one-sided a match as you can get. I do hope he wasn't injured.

Congrats to Shohozan, Gagamaru and Chiyoshouma on getting the eighth, and good luck to Endo, Ichinojo and Miyogiryu. (Endo's gonna need all the luck he can get...)

EDIT: And big congratulations to Aminishiki! The old-timer just keeps on a-truckin'.

To steal from a certain Canadian pro-wrestler, Hak is the best there is, the best the ever was, and the best there ever will be. Write him off at your peril.

Congrats to Kakuryu for the Yusho, has he further justified his rank of Yokozuna?

If Sakamoto gets promoted to Juryo next basho, will miss his 4-3s, it has certainly been a talking point :)

And it's nice to see Sato doing well again, glad to have been proven wrong

He was very clearly injured. A knock-out is some guranteed brain-damage. That is actually something I have been wondering about in sumo, when other sports like american fotball and hockey, and even fotball, have been forced to try to adjust the sport because of the damage. Has this ever been discussed in sumo? Clashing heads for 15 days straight every other month for twenty years, plus more of the same in training between seems like it could add up.

Go Kyokutasei!

Actually there is something about this I have wondered about for awhile. Kotoyuki started taping up his fingers, due to injury I think, and it's gotten progressively more wrapping to the point now that both sets of fingers are wrapped into one on each hand. He basically has 2 boxing mitts at this point. Normally when they hit with their hands it has to be open so the fingers splay softening the blow. In this case Kotoyuki has what amounts to 2 little clubs. They really should make him stop that type of wrapping of his hands.

Well, I mean, a good chunk of the division is "injured" any given basho. I meant "permanently, badly."

Although I think they try to avoid colliding skulls, they...don't always. That being so, I would imagine that you would see the same sort of brain deterioration as in American football or boxing, though probably not to the same degree. But given how weird sumo seems to be about injury on the whole, I don't imagine they're chomping at the bit to do research into this.

If anything, a heavy wrapping of tape would cushion the blow in the same fashion as boxing gloves do (which is part of their purpose). Also, there's nothing to stop a rikishi from slapping with all his fingers together, tape or not. The majority of the force in a slap is delivered through the palm anyway, and not the fingers. If you take that into account, you'll realize that it makes little, if any, difference whether the fingers are held together or separately.

To look at it another way, the total surface area contacting the face is the same, regardless of if the fingers are together, splayed apart individually, or in the "live long and proper" gesture.

I suspect Kotoyuki is wrapping his hands primarily to protect them, with the added benefit that it makes him less likely to accidentally get his hands tangled in his opponents' hair.

If you look at his hands there is no padding. It's just layers of tape. Making them much harder and tougher than just skin. Yes, most of the force is through the palm. But by taping the fingers together you've basically made a much bigger palm. The difference with this is that a palm blow which missed no becomes a hit. The hit on he did landing palm on side of lower part of chin resulted in those wrapped fingers contacting as one with the side of his face.
